Notwithstanding the specific narrative references in this song, I would like to call attention to the symbolism of the elements in the lyrics. Earth, air, water, and fire are all used figuratively, not only in terms of the content but also in the "medium" in which the narrator mentions them. To summarize, "earth" is the perspective of the narrator; "water" represents the transitional state; "air" is the means through which they approach the subject of the lyrics; "fire" is the domain of their heart. The first two stanzas contrast each other, describing similar events in somber and carefree tones respectively. Note how the narrator constantly exists in reference to the earth, moving upon it, leading them into the waters. In both stanzas, fire is also present in its "grounded" form and exists in keeping with the narrator's movements. There are no hints towards the air, the foil to the narrator, other than the line including stars and the narrator's view of them. This leads into their discourse on light subsequently. The second stanza clearly depics the narrator's first encounter with the subject, originating on a casual and initially inconsequential foray into "air". The subject is represented by light, similar to the distant purpose in the stars that the narrator sought, and contrasts the narrator's principles in how light is fire without its warmth. Nevertheless, the narrator seems to align themselves with the subject; the third stanza mention fireworks, the natural combination of fire and light. But the narrator begins to voice their apprehension as well, the unnatural direction they have forced themselves into. Thus we approach the turning point of the song, where the narrator voices their grievances about their path and reclaims their autonomy in the face of the subject.
