"Bella" is a film about the life, influence and impact of California-based artist Bella Lewitzky. Described as"...one of the greatest American dancers of our age," (Walter Terry) Bella Lewitzky was a talented, strong, out-spoken artist, who dedicated her creative life to protect the rights of every American citizen. Designated one of America's Irreplaceable Dance Treasures by the Dance Heritage Coalition and awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Clinton, Lewitzky’s life demonstrates how a “uniquely Californian” artist with vision and tenacity can change the lives of her fellow citizens. I remember seeing this. It helped me understand how to play the dance music of the dances of the 17th and 18th centuries, especially the dances in the Bach Solo Cello Suites. To say that this program revolutionized the way that I play music, especially old dances, is an understatement.
I'm pleased to see this video! I studied with Lynda at Florida State University while obtaining the MFA degree in Dance, and for some years following in the repertory company. I danced, sometimes as a soloist, in many of her works and was her rehearsal assistant. Lynda was inspirational every single day, at every class and rehearsal. I owe a great deal to this amazing woman, an amazing world-class artist. Her influence, knowledge, and support helped me surpass my dreams of becoming an accomplished professional dancer. ❤❤❤
I had the pleasure of seeing this piece recently in London at the Royal Opera House by Yorke Dance Project, a stunning piece of gorgeous, athletic and intelligent modern dance composition by the incredible Bella Lewitzky
We are thrilled that Yorke Dance Project reconstructed Meta 4, a wonderful example of Bella's intelligence and creativity!
So lovely to see the specificity of movement style which is so very much lost with many dancers of today. And great to see John Pennington's work with the company! Also, what an intimate relationship it is choreographer to dancers...the dancer IS the choreographer's dreams/visions.

Sorry to see there isn't more on Bella Lewitzky on TH-cam. When I took dance at UCI in the early 80's she was an incredibly influential force in modern dance. I felt blessed to take a master class with Bella, and I studied choreography with Iris Pell for a term while at UCI and she was an inspiration.
