    Def one of the best films ever made. I first saw it in the late 90's while in Ireland (my Irish friends there absolutely loved it too) . Having since seen it many times since then, not only does it never get 'old' . It actually gets even better with age and I now enjoy every single line in the film. Everyone I've met from all sorts of different backgrounds , whom have seen it too, say they love it. Hence why it has to be one of the best movies ever made. Certianly in my own Top 5 , along with 'Catch 22' (1970) , 'If' (1968) and 'Little Big Man' (1970) -Those 3 films I was lucky enough to see when I was approx 14 / 15 years old, and all 3 helped change my outlook on life completely and helped shape the path I took after leaving school. 'Little Big Man' for example gave me a massive interest and love of Native American culture and I've studied it ever since and found it aligns with my own soul and spirituality. ''If' and 'Catch 22' both highlight how corrupt, evil and destructive colonialism. ('both respectively via the school / education system (If) then in business , which is the root cause of most modern wars now - (Catch 22) )

    If you lack the cultural insight to recognise Withnail's aversion to spending an evening in company with an insane homosexual (as a professional male actor!) of that era then commenting upon classic English movies is not for you. I refer to the "shit in your face" not the accent - or perhaps you are also unaware of Pulp Fiction?

    'You should never mix your drinks' is the only joke in the film. Fucker's alive.

    This movie means the world to me. I've always been surrounded by artists and writers. My upbringing just came with it. So many of them are just out of place in the time and world they're living in. I've heard so many drunken diatribes that I've remembered always and that their speakers have always forgot that were works of absolute poetry and I've seen so many times that people were unable to transcribe the brilliant things that their minds were doing because they were too wasted to do it. Our species skips around brilliance. There are far more thoughts and ideas that should have been heard but never were than the ones that actually got written down, and even amongst those ideas that got written down, too many of them have been forgotten. Brilliance and love are everywhere, but they're too often out out of time and out of place. I would like to imagine a world where brilliant minds thrive, but we always create environments where they're the mutations who get eaten by the voracious ones among us who have insatiatable hungers for the satisfactions of our most base instincts. We're boring ourselves to death with the consumption of things that we only think are entertaining, but in reality are only making us suicidal and even worse: tired.

    The actor who played Uncle Monty also played Mr. Creosote in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. For the uninitiated, he played a morbidly obese obnoxious glutton in a tuxedo dining at a fancy French restaurant. Even though he has projectile vomited into a bucket many times, he still exists that he is not full yet, so he demands an after dinner mint. And then he explodes. Brittania rules the waves.

    • @subplantant
      @subplantant 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No Mr. Creosote was played by Terry Jones. Richard Griffiths wasn't in Monty Python.

    Richard E. Grant is actually allergic to alcohol, but the director got him smashed so he could inhabit the character. He ended up with a hangover that we normals cannot possibly imagine. And Mrs.E.Grant was pregnant during the filming and suffered a miscarriage. Even for a comedy about unemployment, alcoholism and unrequited homosexual desire, it has a lot of tragic subtexts.

    Nice reaction you should do more - interesting fact about this film is that Richard E Grant was (and is) teetotal. So when he was offered the part, it was on condition that the director take him out and get him fall-over drunk so that he could experience it at least once!

    One of my favourite films. I one of those people that visits film location when on holiday( by mistake)around the uk and I have visited many of the Withnail locations my favourite was "crow crag". It really is in the middle of nowhere but beautiful and exactly how it is in the movie it was a magical place to visit plus where they are shooting the fish in the river is just down from the house. I met Bruce once and had lunch together he was friends with my employer and he was a lovely guy, i was utterly star struck as he just turned up and i just said " sorry i have to say Withnail and I and the Killing fields are two of my favourite films" . He was gracious and let me gush for a while even asked what my favourite line is. Good memories and the film will remain as a true classic.

    Richard Griffiths plays Monty.

  • @peroskarstorholm4196
    @peroskarstorholm4196 ปีที่แล้ว

    Withnail’s final monolgue is from Hamlet btw, referencing Monty’s sentiment of realizing he’ll ‘never play the dane’ earlier in the film. There’s quite a lot of Shakespearian references around in there, which is fitting as they’re both out of work actors. I really love how Danny the dealer gets to the heart of the script towards the end with his ‘how long can you hang on to a rising balloon?’-rant. It’s december 1969, the party that was ‘swinging London’ is definitely over and so is Withnail and Marwood’s friendship as it’s obvious Withnail is not willing to let go of the balloon and start to take care of his life and responsibility for his actions. Classic shakespearian tragedy, really. One of my favorite films of all time and it’s just gotten better over the years as I can relate more and more to the two characters from my own life. So thanks a lot for giving it a spin and spreading the word about it ❤

    Richard really was sick on Paul's feet as they had put white vinegar (I think) in the lighter fluid bottle and didn't tell him! Living in London bed sit land as a teenager in the late 60s this movie has it spot on. I will never forget the perpetual cold. In the original script Withnail goes back to the flat at the end, drinks some wine from the barrel of the shotgun he stole from the cottage; and then blows his head off.
