Medena Ensemble
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 13 ก.พ. 2024
A group of Aotearoa/NZ women, enamoured with Bulgarian Folk Song, led by TUi MAMAKi. This ensemble explores vocal tone, bewitching harmony, playful rhythm and the colourful feminine fabric of a community blend. Be they Classic Bulgarian Folk Choir Arrangements, or Obscure Rural Treasure Songs, sometimes arranged for improvisation, these gifts are issue of Tui relationship with Bulgaria and its enchanted voices. Medena means “honeyed”!

Sadi Rada, Rado Le (Swdi Rada, Radu Le)
This 9/16 (2223) “Daichovo” rhythm from Strandja (South East Bulgaria) carries the danceable tale of a maiden gathering herbs and being solicited by two passing horsemen. Strangely enough the bachelor is the more considerate here, while the married man would lie and receive her “bouquet”, as he has already done with 9 maidens, in 9 villages...
Our version seeks to honour the Strandja dialectal pronunciation, curling the ‘o’ into something closer to ‘ou’, darkening the ‘a’ to sound closer to the Bulgarian ‘ъ’ (transliterated as ‘w’), and on some words softening the ’n’.
This arrangement, by Tui Mamaki, has drawn on many different versions, including that of the Dinevi Sestri and Polina by the Varna Sea Garden.
Performance filmed 10th July 2024

Zora Se E Zazorila (Dawn Has Broken) A traditional Bulgarian bavna pesen (slow song) from the Rodopi mountains, arranged by Stefka Kushleva, and studied with Prof. Dora Hristova, in Plovdiv. Our arrangement and interpretation is largely inspired by Gergana Dimitrova's exquisite performance on the Eva Quartet album "Harmonies". Here interpreted by Kate Bartlett & Medena Ensemble, led by Tui Mama...

A Diaphonic Diptych : Trima Momi Galet & Yana Ovchar Lwgala This juxtaposition of two distinct folkloric regions, (Nedelino in the Rodopi Mountains and Shop Region in Western Bulgaria), seeks to play off the similarities and differences of these two renowned diaphonic styles. The first song, in walking measure, is typically sung antiphonally with the unique characteristic of a “skok” (jump) fro...

Such a pleasure to be part of this ensemble for this incredible moment... watching back now, I have a new appreciation of the colour, the tones, and the organic way they are so embodied and so grounded through our bodies and relationships!!! Wow. Really bringing the culture of sisterhood, storytelling, and deep feeling. Delicious!!
