The Guarneri Sound Test: Can You Hear the Difference Between Two Bridges?
🎻 Traditional vs. Innovative Violin Bridges: An Acoustic Comparison 🎻
Join me as we dive into the fascinating world of violin acoustics! In this video, we’ll explore how two different bridges-a traditional design and an innovative model-shape the voice of a violin. Using my latest creation, a violin inspired by the 1743 Guarneri del Gesù “Ex Brusilow,” we’ll compare their unique sound profiles.
Crafted with precision and care, this violin represents my interpretation of the original, featuring faithfully replicated arching and stylistic elements, as if it had just left Guarneri’s workshop. Paired with my modern techniques, this instrument bridges historical craftsmanship with a contemporary voice.
🎶 Performed by violinist Angela Kang, you’ll hear an excerpt from the second movement of Wieniawski’s violin concerto-first with the traditional bridge, then with the innovative design. Can you hear the difference? (better to listen with earphones)
Bridges from Despiau Chevalets.

Hi! What was the player's opinion? I am glad that you are imagining how the violin would look on the day it was made fresh by Del Gesu, not antiquing it to look like it might do after 250 + years.
Thank you for your comment! The player slightly preferred the innovative model, as it offered a bit more response and clarity. However, she mentioned that if a violin is well-made, it will sound great with either bridge!
@MarcoOsioViolinmaker I think she makes a very good point... An innovative bridge cannot magic up something that is missing!
Do you refer plate thickness distribution of the original for making your latest violin?
Thank you for your question! I didn’t follow the original plate thickness distribution. Instead, I relied on my own experience to achieve the best possible acoustic result for this instrument.
maybe you should put side by side the playing to have a better comparison (with some editing) ;)
Thank you for watching and for your suggestion!
I would like to know a few things. 1- What grit sandpaper do you use? 2- I see you use a scraper on the spruce. Do you also use sandpaper on the spruce. Can you explain why? 3- What exactly is the sealer you use? What’s the name? 4- Can you do a video on varnishing and explain what varnish exactly you use. Most videos out there are very imprecise and don’t go into the details needed to do the job. It’s frustrating. I like how slowly and carefully you work. Better than most. I’m getting ready to start my first violin and am collecting information. Do more videos please. I like the carefulness you work with. Best I’ve seen. Thank you.
My GOD, your violin is aesthetically wonderful, the color is perfect, the sound is magical! A question: is this innovative bridge the same as the traditional Despiau 3-tree model, or is it another Despiau model? Your violin is a dream for any musician
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m truly happy to hear you enjoyed both the aesthetics and the sound of my violin-it means a lot. To answer your question: the innovative bridge is not the same as the traditional Despiau 3-tree model. It’s a prototype designed by Despiau Chevalet with a different concept to enhance certain tonal qualities. I really appreciate your thoughtful comment and support!
@@MarcoOsioViolinmaker Thank you for your reply! I play and am passionate about violins, following hundreds of luthiers around the world, including Cremona, and I am from BRAZIL. And I am being honest, the instrument is beautiful, has the characteristic power of the Guarneri, projection, but is pleasant to the ears. I am following you on Instagram, and I saw great luthiers from BRAZIL following you, success to you! And please keep posting on TH-cam.
Thank you for your support! I’m glad you enjoy my work-I’ll keep sharing more, I am doing my best!😊
Absolutly the second movement sounded more open! You should have tagged the vidio so audience could understand which bridge was which? But there was enough difference I could hear to be certain the modified bridge sounded rounder fuller opened up! Congratulations on your achievement.
It’s wonderful to hear that the modified bridge resonated with you-it’s always rewarding to see these innovations making a real impact. Thank you again for your kind words and support!
I prefer the first bridge
Thanks for your feedback!
The second bridge has a more immediate response to the stroke. Also, I felt the second one had a better handle and clarity of softer pianos.
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback!
so, how do I get one? 😁
@@dannicecrespo565 At the moment, I’m not sure if it’s available on the market since it’s still a prototype made by Despiau Chevalet. Hopefully, it will be commercially available soon!
@@MarcoOsioViolinmaker Thank you for all this info, Marco!
Looks to me that the significant differences between the two bridges could be the type of wood, and the fact that the 'innovative' bridge is flared out at the top and hence puts more leverage or bending moment on the bridge feet. Would be grateful if you could elaborate on this. Thank you.
Thank you for your thoughtful observation! I carefully selected two pieces of wood with as similar a density as possible to minimize differences caused by the material itself. I completely agree with you regarding the flared design of the innovative bridge-it does create more leverage on the bridge feet, which likely influences how the vibrations are transmitted to the body of the violin. Your analysis is very insightful!
Is there a reason to play without shoulder rest ? I’ve try a few times but it was extremely painful on my bones 🦴.
She doesn’t like shoulder rest 😅
I didn't expect to hear the difference. But it was very audible even for an amateur like me. For the first example I thought the violin sounded somewhat raw and edgy, with the "innovative" bridge, the edges were smoothed out.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I’m glad the difference was clear and noticeable.
O primeiro agressivo.... O segundo mais suave e equilibrado. Saudações do Brasil!
Thank you for your feedback! I’m glad you noticed the difference.
First one. But depends from another things
Thank you for sharing your opinion!
El primero me ha parecido un sonido mas agudo, mas brillante; el segundo, mas dulce y envolvente. Saludos desde España.
Thanks for sharing your feedback!
Can you share the recipe of the sealler? Thank you!
This is a very well done informative video. I not only like the visual presentation but I appreciate the division of the video into segments that are described in text to facilitate finding the separate steps easily again. Thanks
Thank you for your kind words! I’m really glad you found the video informative and appreciated the segmented structure. I wanted to make it as clear and easy to follow as possible. Your feedback means a lot!

ih i forgot to ask you Marco, what kind of brush you use for this spirit varnish?, what kind of hair , etc? thanks
I prefer brushes with natural bristles, and I specifically use sable brushes. They provide the flexibility and precision needed for applying spirit varnish evenly.
One of the finest Violas Ive heard! You got it right! Makes.me want to defect to Viola. Bravo! Bellisima! Dont change a thing! Keep making those! I can only hope to own one of your Violas one day. Beautiful varnish! Andrea Guarnieri would be proud of you!❤
Thank you so much for your kind words and enthusiasm! It means a lot to hear such appreciation for my work, especially from someone so inspired by the viola’s voice.🎻
these are copies. King(not the King Joseph from 1737 but King Guarneri-the real King) is in protected vault in Zagreb and is most well preserved Guarneri del Gesu violin along side with the one owned by Nicolo Paganini. King was owned by Zlatko Baloković who left it in his last will to Croatian academy of science and arts. King is very very rarely played
tarifi öğrenmek isterim :)
Perform the demonstration by explaining the construction of the varnish and its effect on the wood and the sound. Not with a video of shaking the container
As good as it is while new, it can only get better with age. Although we can't be certain, Guarneri's instruments probably sounded the same as yours when themselves new. May I suggest you look into some of New Zealand's native timbers for instrument making and especially, fossilised Kauri gum for your varnish?
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I completely agree-there’s something truly special about how an instrument’s sound evolves with time. I appreciate your suggestion about New Zealand’s native timbers and fossilized Kauri gum for varnish; I’ll definitely look into it!
a damp sound
This violin is beautiful, what color is it? orange and any other color? thank you
Thank you! I always use a mix of natural colors-orange, red, and brown-blended carefully to achieve the desired shade.
Thank you for sharing the first playing of that beautiful sounding viola Marco.
Thank you so much, Peter! I’m thrilled you enjoyed the first notes of this viola. Stay tuned for more videos on my crafting process and future creations!
the two instruments are almost identical in sound, I did not find anything individual in them, just improved factory-made sound sharpness is given by casein glue and varnish hardness. There is buzz and garbage in the sound. the sound of violins is not polished.and how they will sound after 300 hours of playing is an important question
What type of materials you have used, please?
Brusilow for me. Both beautiful instruments.
Thanks for sharing your opinion!
No explain 😢😢😢😢😢
Hi Marco, can you tell me more about this gouge? radius, measurement, and on which degree it is? thank you!

Magnifique travail la couleur du vernis est très réussie et le vernis très transparent.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you like the color and transparency of the varnish!
Marco, you mention a protein-based sealer, but I don't recall you telling us what that is. Could you explain? Thanks.
I personally use lactic casein as a protein-based sealer, but other types of proteins can work just as well. The choice of sealer often comes down to personal preference and the desired final effect on the instrument.
Before varnishing ( available in the market) Violin should be scrubed with zero amery paper? Coulored Varish is available in the market?
Thanks for your questions! Check out my latest video on how I prepare the violin before varnishing. As for colored varnish, yes, it is available on the market, but many luthiers, including myself, prefer to prepare and mix our own pigments and dyes to achieve a more personalized and unique result.
As you get to that final coat, do you increase the amount of alcohol to keep the brush flowing, or do you use an oil towards the end? I find that I need to rush in order for my shellac to not dry before I finish a pass with my brush or cloth.
Thanks for your question! For the final coat of varnish, I actually dilute it heavily with alcohol. This helps keep the brush flowing smoothly and allows for a more controlled and even application.
Brawo polska firma!!! Jestem z was dumny!
Para mí, el Brusilov es mas cálido y profundo.
Thanks for your feedback!😊
beautiful instrument
Thank you so much! I’m glad you appreciate the instrument!

What kind of brush are you using?
I use a brush with sable hair. Their quality and elasticity make them perfect for achieving a smooth and even finish.
I sand my instruments with Toxicodendron radicans leaves, hermetically sealed and kept in a mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnalls’ porch for 24 hours
LOL
🥱😴
Nice work. Do you use albumine or gelatine for penetration?
Bravo 👏
Thank you!!
Thank you 👍
