what does Bb over F or Eb over G mean?
2nd and 1st Inversions of the chords Bb major and Eb Major.
nice backing track, man
Thanks a lot!
I agree. I learned the CAGED system because so many students ask about it. Because it’s all over TH-cam. But I never use the G shape and I do find some of it be counter intuitive. I enjoyed this video thank you
Exactly! I see a lot of people kind of stop learning once they learn the CAGED method. It’s just a pattern, there are thousands on a fretboard!
Nice! A lot of upstrokes there 😊
Yeah I guess there is!
@ my tendency is towards downstrokes. I was working on trying to purposely change my picking to be be more towards alternate picking but I’ve seen so many great players using “subpar technique” and it’s working just fine for them. Plus I’ve heard numerous greats like Warren Hayes say do what comes natural to you, that’s the best technique. I tend to agree so I’m for the most part just letting it come naturally. That being said as I work on something more, like an arpeggio run and try to get faster I do see my technique starting to change. Part of that is subconscious but there is a conscious part to it as well.
Weird to hear classic phish solos over Parker changes. Great musicianship, but I bet their bebop chops were a little rusty at this time.
Yeah I agree, def would not consider these solos as terrific when compared to those that play bebop daily.
Great look at Donna Lee. This is the type of head that also teaches a lot about improvising over changes. Very cool. Thanks!
I couldn’t agree more! It’s more of a shred than a head. Appreciate you!
@@ColinWardMusic Haha... well said. Cheers!
Can you make a video analyzing Treys solo?
I can, but I reserve that level of work for my students! Transcribing is VERY time consuming. Feel free to join my "Community Open Studio" zoom lessons on my patreon, or give me a call for 1:1 zoom lessons. Very much appreciate your comments and support!
Dude, thank you so much!

Nice work! Btw, what guitar is that?
Equator instruments standard. Thanks
this is exactly what I was looking for! excellent work! Trying to learn this part on bass. Its really pushing my limits!
Happy to help!
Nicely done
Thanks so much!
Beautiful!
@@Thomas-xl5vk thanks!

An example of that sound is 27 min mark of Hampton 97 Gin. I think I hear some univibe and wan in a set position. Any ideas ? Appreciate your videos Colin.
Let me check!
At 27’ I hear univibe, not hearing wah set position. Closer to 28’ he turns whammy (like a pog) up the octave but played that repeating lick, likely in the same position.
Thanks Colin, he has an infinite bag of tricks 😂
Thanks for the rig rundown Colin. There’s another sound Trey used to use a lot in fall 97 and he still uses on occasion. I can only describe a synth overdrive type sound, not sure how gets it. Maybe a Pog ? You can hear it on Hampton 97
Interesting; you’re not thinking of the wah with whammy one octave down combo are you? Gets that kind of low snarl sound, maybe?
I’m not sure about 97 but sounds like the growler patch on his line 6 m5 on his most recent rig rundown a couple years back
Cow Funk dawg!!
🐮🐮🐮🏆🏆🏆
These are cool. Like how the first one focusses on the minor-major 3rd connection. The second feels a cool alternate Lester flat run (?). Love the third one for double stops which I tend not to use with bluegrass...but love finding ways to get more harmonic interest. Great combo of theory and practice.
Thanks!
Yess 👍❤💚💙
Dig the shirt
Thanks! My favorite studio album 💯
Love all your videos man, thank you. Out of pure curiosity, why do you cross your sevens?
Thanks so much! I have no clue 😆
Nice one, Colin! Love the theory.
Thanks Barry! Me too!
Perfect tone bro.✌️
Thanks!
This is educational and fun!
Thanks so much for this lesson so many useful pieces of info here!
You're very welcome!
Great job! Tone and tab. Thanks
Thanks so much!
good one, thanks
Appreciate that! My pleasure
Excellent work. You have inherently described a spectrul of things we need to learn as we progress. You can actually make a video of what a person should study as they develop through eavh level. Best wishes dor your future videos. Will follow your work ❤
Thanks so much!
Colin, what is your lesson fee and do you typically teach your students once every 2 weeks or what is the typical cadence?
@@mtorrence27 hey, happy to discuss that info on the phone or via email. Info is in description of this video. Thanks for asking.
Absolutely incredible video Colin!! I have never seen anyone break down the fundamentals of improvisation so effectively and clearly. And the part on consciousness was especially amazing. I cannot say enough how fantastic this video is. Exactly the stuff i needed to hear, cant wait to practice all this :D PS, nice puns
Thank you SO MUCH!
god bless ya. been wanting to learn this for years
Great video, thanks for sharing! I've never actually listened to Phish, but I enjoyed Trey's rig rundown(s) and really enjoyed this one. Despite playing guitar for more decades than I'd care to admit, I've only just started using pedals. Consequently, I really appreciate the thought and creativity that goes into these sound crafting tools! Looking forward to watching Part 2 in about 20 seconds!
Glad you enjoyed it!
CAGED chords stacks too many repreated notes, it covers 3 octaves, the whole point of the open voicings is staying in those first 4 frets to play all the chords in a key, if a person wants to play "CAGED chords" on upper frets, a capo does the job just fine the only genre can think of relying in those chords is country music, where a single steel acoustic guitar is pretty much the only mid range instrument, its like playing right and left hand on the piano at the same time, while modern guitar is pretty much playing only the right hand
Yeah it’s not for everyone!
Cool looking guitar! We saw them in Nashville last year and they played this coverthe 2nd night . Opening the1st set with Also Sprach ZaraThustra blew my mind.
Nice!
Q: You have absolute pitch? Seems like you might.
I have "relative pitch" but not "perfect pitch". Thanks for watching!
Great video, Colin. Thank you for taking the time to tab and giving soloing scale suggestions.
My pleasure!
Good Video, friend!! What kind of guitar is that??? Also love the mesa boogie.
Thanks. It’s an equator standard by equator instruments.
Lems....good shoes lol
@@willum8915 lmfao the gear video. Yeah they are cozy for stomp boxes!
Straight to the point. Great video
Thank you !
No BS just straight into it❤❤❤
🤘hell yeah!
I'm starting to suspect that gingers are just more talented when it comes to the guitar. 🤔
