#5 Scotland - Everything Changes
Video 5 - Old Man Storr to Loch Torridon
In this video the weather finally breaks and brings me a glorious sunrise which I watched from the top of Old Man Storr. I parked my van at the road side of the Old Man Storr Car Park at 6am and hiked up the mountain to see Old Man Storr. The Hike is quite challenging due to the steep incline the whole way up. Distance wise it’s not far but the steep incline results in about a 50 minute to 1hr 15 minutes depending on your level of fitness. The hike took me 1 hour and I arrived at the top just in time for sunrise at 7am. There is Pay and Display parking at the car park and arriving early guarantees you a space. As you can see from the video there were many people who made took the hike for sunrise as the weather forecast was very good. The stunning vista was lit up by golden sunlight and clear blue skies. After an amazing experience in the morning I left the Isle of Skye via the road bridge and not the ferry boat and drove to a town called Dornie, calling in for a Quick Look at Eileen Donan Castle in Dornie, before driving on towards Torridon. There is an entry fee of 10 Pounds Sterling to the castle and also 5 Pounds Sterling for parking. As I was pushed for time I decided not to enter the castle this time and drove on to park up at Loch Torridon View Point for the night, which was so beautiful, and chilled out for the evening sun.
About Me
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video, I really appreciate you being here.
My name is Jim and I am a regular guy living in the Republic of Ireland with a Day Job but also a passion for landscape photography, travel and now travel in my camper van during my spare time.
I decided to take a trip to test my recently completed van in Scotland in Sept 2024.
The purpose of my videos are not filmed to win awards or with a hope to make money or gain thousands of subscribers.
My videos are for me to look back on in years to come and document my travels in my camper van.
If my videos also serve to provide you with an insight in to the places I visit then this is a bonus for me and I hopefully will inspire and inform you if you are planning to visit Scotland or these same locations on a trip of your own.
My Journey starts in the North if England and I traveled a route up the West Coast of Scotland including the Isle of Skye for what was supposed to be 1 week, but ended up being 2 weeks.
If you are interested my Camper Van is a 2018 Peugeot Boxer (Europe) / RAM Pro Master (USA) L4 H2 which means it is 6.3m long and is the 2nd tallest van you can buy in the range. In the H1 you cannot stand up in that van but the H2 and H3 you can. I spent any spare time I had when not working or with my family for the past 13 months converting what was a Parcel Delivery (Courier) Van in to my dream camper van which you can see in my videos.

    The gondola doesn't go up Ben Nevis, it goes up Aonach Mor. There are no ski lifts on Ben Nevis. Aonach Mor is connected to Carn Mor Dearg which, in turn, is connected to Ben Nevis. Goodness knows when they changed the name as I have always known it as Aonach Mor Ski Centre but I haven't been across to that side of the country for some years now.

    I can use some help planing my trip. I am planning to go to Seceda on May 23rd. It looks like most of the cable cars will not be in service except for Col Raiser. Any idea how long is the hike from the Col Raiser cable car arrival station to Seceda? I will arrive in the early afternoon so I am worried about not making it back in time for the last cable car at 5 pm. Thank you!

    • @anyjimblogs
      @anyjimblogs 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi There, unfortunately the cable car at Col Raiser was not open to the public for us. The cable cars were moving but there was a maintenance crew working on them inside the station so the cable cars were closed. We asked the guys doing the work (they had no English and we had no Dutch as they were from the Netherlands) if we could ride to Seceda and hike down but they said no. I think the maintenance was after ski season obviously and summer there is little demand to use them. Anyway we hiked from Kol Raiser to Seceda. Depends on your speed but I would allow 3-4hrs for the hike to the top from Col Raiser. When we got close to the top we found a road so it seems you can drive close to the top. There was a construction site with a crane so trucks seemed to be able to drive to the construction site. If we had known that we would probably have driven closer to the top of Seceda and taken a different route around the top instead. You can read my blog here which may be useful as it has more details on locations we parked and visited. www.anyjimblogs.com/post/camper-van-travel-in-the-dolomites

      Hi There, thank you for watching my video and for the comment, I really appreciate it. Regarding a suitable day hike, it depends what distance you have in mind and how serious you are about hiking. However, hopefully this will be helpful. Check out my blog article of our trip and if you’re short of time skip to Day 4 or Day 6 in the Blog - link below. Day 4 - 3 Peaks of Lavaredo is a great option but it depends on how much snow is left when you travel. You will likely get up to the start of the 3 peaks hike but too much snow may prevent you getting around the 3 peaks hike itself. Even so it was a great day. Another option is Day 6 - Mount Seceda - this was very accessible even with the snow we experienced at higher altitudes. I have included details of the hikes and locations in the blog. Hope this helps. www.anyjimblogs.com/post/camper-van-travel-in-the-dolomites

    Hi, your video is really nice. I am planning to visit the area approximately in the same period (arriving there on May 17th and staying for 4 days). My main points of interest are Seceda, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Lago di braies. I am reading some mixed reviews about that time of the year. My main question is if cable cars are working.

    • @anyjimblogs
      @anyjimblogs ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi There, Thank you for watching my video and thank you for the comment. Our experience was that cable cars were not working in any of the locations we visited during our trip. Every main cable car station we passed had the cable cars themselves taken off of the cable itself and stored in the car park. I do not know if this was a temporary situation for the period between the winter and summer season and the cable cars are up and running again in June or not? It did not look that way to us. The smaller ski lifts were also not in use but in one location we saw engineers using these to move logs / carry out maintenance projects. When we arrived at Col Raiser we saw the cable cars moving so hoped we could take a cable car up to Seceda and hike back down but we found a crew of maintenance engineers working on the cable cars within the Col Raise Cable Car station so they were not open to the public. You can also read my Blog on my website which provides allot more information on our trip and the places we stopped. TOP TIP - Lagos De Braise is very busy from about 8am so if you want to have the lake to yourself get up early and be there from 7am or even earlier. No, cable cars are not working in May. Most seem to reopen mid June. Dolomites are a ghost town in May. 95% of everything (accommodation, restaurants, bars, cafes are all shut). All the places you mentioned have too much snow for hiking, but there's not enough snow for skiing so things shut down... I found out the hard way.

    • @anyjimblogs
      @anyjimblogs ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi There, Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. We travelled from the 7th to 14th May. The mountains and high roads were still thick with snow but the low roads and low lands were clear of snow. Regardless of the snow on the high roads, all roads open to traffic were clear of snow and in great condition. Driving was not a problem. The weather was generally great. We had temperatures of +20 degrees C each day and on the day we climbed Seceda it was 26 Deg C. If you are travelling in a camper van you should be aware that if you park at high altitude the temperature drops very low over night and I found it quite cold in bed, but the vans have heating which solved this problem. If you are hiking you will definitely need hiking boots with ankle support. Regarding clothing all we needed was hiking trousers and then layers for the top half of our bodies. T Shirts, long sleeved tops and then quilted jackets plus hats. We did not need gloves it was not that cold for us. If you would like more detailed information you can read my Blog here - www.anyjimblogs.com/post/camper-van-travel-in-the-dolomites Thank you once again for taking the time and feel free to ask more questions and I will help If I can.
