Backpacking the Appalachian Trail: Watauga Lake

Flatbill and I go out on a planned 4 day/50 mile hike from Watauga Lake to Damascus, VA! One problem though: a historic drought and lack of water on the trail! All in all we had a great learning experience and a great overnight hike on the Appalachian Trail!

    I did this section about the same time during the summer. South bounders said water was scarce as well which turned out to be false. So before I set out I hid water caches of 3 liters each at each of the road crossings. Turned out I didn't need the caches, but better safe than sorry I reckon.

    A neat video, but I am a little confused. When did the they move that mountain range, especially Cheaha Mountain, from from the northern part of the State down to the wire grass area?

      It's south of I-20. Central Alabama.

      I would hang your food as there is a large population of feral hogs in the area. No bears so the canister is not needed

      Pigs may be an issue but I’ve been hiking the Sipsey for 25 years and haven’t hung food once. No problem yet.

      Dilute tea tree oil and lightly spray it on your shoes and socks and the base of your tent. if you take a dog, it's safe to spray on their feet and legs to prevent ticks from crawling up. I hike bankhead all the time and use this. I've found on average less than one tick on me per trip.

      Yes the sign says no overnight parking. This site said overnight parking was allowed. www.cumberlandtrail.org/maps-and-guides/trail-segments/tn-river-gorge/signal-edwards-points-section/ We just locked the car and chanced it.

    Dude...very artsy filming and editing!. Love it. Sawmill campsite 8 sucks...lots of widowmakers! Don't stay at Sawmill in the summer...unless you love saunas with heavy mosquitoes and the chance on no water at Schwoon! Last year i stayed at Sawmill with single digits in my warbonnet ridgerunner and was there all alone. It was eerily quite. Enjoyed, and you boys earned a sub!

      Michael Cunningham Permit is required and you have to reserve your spot at the backcountry sites
