Wilesco Dampfmaschine (Steam Engine)
I'm back! This time firing up my old Wilesco steam engine. It doesn't go quite as smoothly as I thought it would. I also discuss my holiday from computer screens and an unexpected problem encountered while re-reading "The Lord of the Rings". And, as this was recorded on Victoria Day (mostly) I have some words about boating safety this summer. For those not in the know, Victoria Day weekend is the start of cottage season in Canada.
And wouldn't Dampfmaschine be a great name for an electronic band?

A bit of a change for this one. I picked these up a few years ago with the intent of converting them into flying albino cave-dwelling groundhogs - it's a long story. So they became the anchor of our Hallowe'en decorations. Then, after years of service the flapping action of the wings became more floppy then stopped altogether. So I thought repairing them would be a good idea for a video. Howeve...

Wrenn Railways LMS 2-6-4T and Five Wagons, Secret Stash Pt 2

I finally got myself a Wrenn locomotive. And best of all it's a 2-6-4T, one of my favourite British locomotive types. Way back when I was a kid and we visited England, I saw one of these - and many other Wrenn items - in a shop window in Stafford. But we were in the car and I never had a chance to go in there. A Wrenn engine needs some Wrenn wagons to pull! So I got a few of those. I'm divided ...

Hornby 0-4-0 Tank Locomotives

A staple of the Tri-ang, then Tri-ang Hornby, then just Hornby lineup has been the 0-4-0 locomotive. Small locomotive models are reasonably inexpensive and allow people to enter the hobby. With this in mind, small locomotive models are probably important for more toy/model train companies than just Hornby. Critter Tracks in the Snow: Raccoons in Toronto
I like the Hornby 0-4-0 locos, as they are cheap and plentiful and available in a huge range of liveries, and excellent to run on small layouts. Great vid. Your way of speaking and accent sounded kind of familiar and I think it sort of reminds me a little bit of Frank Zappa's talking bits between songs on his live records. Which is a good thing BTW.
This physically paying me to watch this
Great video thanks for sharing, love these little tank locomotives, J
I am sure you already know, but almost all the locomotives you have presented in this video are available in the Hornby 2024 new items program as a tribute to the 70th anniversary of the Margate factory. Not the exact molds, but as a tribute to the legendary locos.
*Promo sm* 🤣
I had a Hiawatha as a young fella & what I do remember was that it came with an oil that you would put down the smoke stack. This oil would smoke simulating a running train.
Love the channel! So glad i found the channel
TW, the wheel/track standards on that 2-10-0 are very different to Triang. You might notice Oscar uses, or seems to use, Super 4 track. Also, check the Mk 1 coach to make sure the axles are not riding out of their bearings. If they are replacement is problematic. To really comment involves mentioning brand-names; it would help if you provided an email address in your information. Best Wishes
Hornby was selling that hopper set in the 90s I loved mine as a boy I also had the yellow switcher as well (still have it).
They are cool, aren't they. They good play value. I now want to pick up some operating hopper cars. Thanks for the comment.
Nice video. I might be going to Barrie, I'll look for the Thumbwhacker shirt.
Thanks. I may be wearing my jacket. But keep your eyes peeled, I have something pinned to it.
Hello from Ottawa. I have a bunch of Tri-Ang equipment including a pulpwood car if you are interested.
Thanks for watching my video. I am interested. Thanks.
@@thumbwhacker4845 What Tri-Ang would you be interested in? Track? Rolling stock? Locomotives? Structures?
Interesting video. A couple of things. Hitting the handle of a screw driver can, and has, created weakness lines in the handle structure. The weakness lines might be invisible. At some stage in the future when someone is pushing down hard on the tool to loosen a screw, the handle can fracture, sending the tang of the screw driver right into the wrist and forearm. A nasty injury. Similarly, hitting a hammer with another hammer is problematic. Parts or all of the metal might be hardened. Bits can break and really fly. Some ill-informed folk at one of our shopping centres were running a holiday kids' activity based on chiselling 'fossil' bearing rock. As above the organisers were teaching kids to use screwdrivers as chisels. Each child was given a screw driver and a hammer to hit it with. I did tactfully try and warn. They were incapable of listening. Now we have probably hundreds of kids/now adults spreading the practice. As my friend Jack said 'I've seen men sacked for less!' Don't be discouraged; like all of us, I do less than brilliant things also. I rely on others to warn.
Managed to hit some kind of send button in my comment above. Even so I will mostly leave it at that. In my case I have stopped pursuing this in favour of real modelling - let's see how far I get????????????? My next project was to rebuild a Brush 2 up to a running standard of what I call 'linear chess'. Huge task! This is a great backwater of the interest area. Just have your eyes wide open and be absolutely sure this is what you want to do. Keep modelling (no American spelling around here).
Oh I hope this stuff does not frustrate. It can be made work well, but it is a fraught subject. The aim is reasonably to walk away from a layout for a few weeks and have the trains start smoothly when you return. 'Smoothly' means no table thumping or otherwise use of the 0-5-0 shunter. Having a losing wrestling match every time you want to run a train will very quickly drain enthusiasm. You will need support from like mined folk. Strongly suggest following TH-cam Mr Snooze, and to a lesser extent Oscar Paisly (spelling?). Also strongly suggest you build a simple layout, even if it has to be kept under your bed. You need to find what works for you. By the yard-stick of a train responding to the throttle without hesitation I have only seen perhaps one layout actually work (the two youtubers not included). Of those, one was circuit running at an exhib., and the other was heavily doctored; its owner replaced nearly all the gear with Wrenn. Some disparate ideas from your videos. 1/ Peco track is expensive and not magnetic, but having said that it doesn't rust. Neither does not respond to 'Magnadhesion'. Magnadhesion matters for traction, but more importantly because it aids current pickup just enough to give locos like the Brush 2 and the Hymek some chance of decent running. Inadequate pickup is an Achilles heel of Rovex. 2/ Certainly replace the brushes on your Princess. Be reticent to clean a dirty commutator without brush replacement as the old brushes might be softened by oil, in which case will quickly repeat the problem.
Hello. Thanks for your advice. I picked up a nice piece of plywood (plywood is like gold these days) from the side of the road the other day that will do dandy as a the top for a train table - but I have to keep it in the shed. My problem is that I simply don't have any space even to store that piece of plywood in the house let alone any kind of layout. I'll make do for the next little while. As to track: Your are right, Peco doesn't rust. I am divided. For me, new Peco is about the same a Hornby track. When I did have a layout many years ago, I used a mix of Hornby set track and Peco flex and the trains ran fine. I even had a couple of Streamline points. The GWR and the red 0-40Ts were able to manage them - just. You have given me plenty to think about. Thanks.
This message should appear after the other one. I do watch Oscar Paisley. He has accumulated so much of the old Tri-ang catalogue that he's branched out into Hornby Dublo. It's amazing stuff. I'll check out Mr. Snooze. Thanks.
Just in case you don't know: 'Mr Snooze' covers servicing one of these 4MT's in th-cam.com/video/p4K_1rNEjHw/w-d-xo.html See also Ronald Dodd for remag and servicing. th-cam.com/video/0LKT4JGMewU/w-d-xo.html will get you there. Have run these locos for years...Marvellous. The Hornby DoUBL 'O' Castle could probably hold its own against most modern locos ... and that is on their terms. I appreciate all the help and advice I have been given, so hopefully these sites will help someone out there. Keep sharing and enjoy.
Have you ever run any of this stuff?
The Wrenn, never, but I will do running sessions. However, we don't have the space at our house for a layout of any kind. But I am going to set up a temporary layout at a friend's.
I have one of the early versions of these. Sadly for display only as the Triang Super 4 flanges are too deep for my Code 100 trackwork.
That's too bad - especially if it still works. I will say this for Super 4 track - it is incredibly robust and I like how the pieces connect together. I have my eye some Super 4. Thanks for watching my video. And I'll check out you channel.
It's not a cult . It's a subscription box

Nice to see our Canadian cousins taking an interest in British railways - those Wrenn models were fine pieces of engineering, rather than detailed or exquisite models. I have this exact locomotive myself, plus a couple of others and some Wrenn rolling stock - all of their stuff is built like a brick outhouse! I’m currently building a DCC layout and I intend to convert the locos using chips meant for larger gauges that can handle the 1A or more that these motors can draw.
Yes, it is a very nice loco. I'm very pleased to have picked this one up - especially I was looking at Wrenn items on a whim. There still is a relatively strong contingent of British prototype modellers in Canada. I have always wanted the Wrenn Royal Scot, particularly the Black Watch in LMS lined black. But it was way too expensive for me when they were new, and it's still way too expensive now. Thanks for watching my video.
DCC conversion not easy as the entire grounded brush housing must be isolated from frame (the insulated side already is). This means ACCURATELY boring out the motor block to accommodate the brass brush sleeve and and the new insulating sleeve now covering it. There also needs to be confidence that if the system overheats the insulating sleeve does not give off toxic fumes. I have seen it described to bore out the frame for an insulated brush holder and hold the spring and brush direct in the insulator. Modified that way the brush sits in a 'plastic' tube and receives its current from only the spring. Not a good idea as 1/ Never ask a brush spring to carry a traction current as it will likely heat and then lose its temper, and things cascade down from there. The spring becomes an electrical filament. 2/ Only a chemical engineer would know what the heated spring releases from the plastic insulator. The insulator is usually 3d printed. The Hornby Dublo (DoUBLe "O') design never left the brush spring as the traction current conduit. It would have carried some load as it bore on the brush end and both were contacting the sleeve or frame, but the lions share was carried by the frame on the grounded side, and the conductive sleeve on the insulated side. On the insulated side the whole sleeve with the brush and spring inside it were mounted into an insulated sleeve. At the very least know the heat characteristics of your loco prior to conversion (as best you can) and extensively test afterward. You don't know who is going to get this loco when you are dead and gone. It could be a kid. Real mechanical engineers and electrical engineers must cringe at what we do. See Dave Ramirez th-cam.com/video/E5W0xy2SMyM/w-d-xo.html (Why didn't that go blue?) at about the 6:40 (hope that's right) mark for more on what traction currents do to brush springs. Get good advice and don't forget to remagnetise. Hope this helps. I hate leaving comments; the trouble is someone who has even less experience than the rest of us mugs can get burned.
I like the troubleshooting skills and then seeing the locomotive in action. Now you've given yourself many little projects - especially with the super tiny 3D print, if you can pull that one off.
I need to clear some space for the printer. I've got a few projects in mind, but it's been a mix of limited time and limited space to do them. I'd really like to get a new printer like a Creality K1 or Bambu Labs X1. They're very fast but rather expensive.
Fun video. It's pronounced "Fife", Like "Life" Bananas. Are you building a full layout, or is that on another video?
Unfortunately, I'm not building a full layout - we just don't have the room in our basement. I will put together a demo layout of some kind so I can show these in action. I would like to get as much of my original rollingstock and recent purchases operational be fore I do that. Which means boring videos for a while yet!
Hi ThumbWhacker, all you need to do is find a standard Tri-ang princess rear bogie which is a direct replacement for the later one supplied with the Gresley tender, these are a very common spare here in the U.K. I have two of the Transcontinental Pacific locomotives, one of which I’ve repainted into CPR passenger livery (which I bought as a non runner with a damaged body) great to see the Transcontinental locomotive and coaches in the Canadian Pacific livery, would love to make a train up of them myself but they are rarer than Rocking horse manure over this side of the pond. 😂
Thanks Ian. I just looked at my Prince Elizabeth and it's exactly as you say. My idea was to find a Hiawatha and repaint it, or a body and a later Princess chassis with the shiny wheels. However, I may have found a solution to that, which will be in a video that I should get up in a couple of weeks. I'd like to see that repainted pacific. Those coaches are getting pretty rare here too. Thanks for subscribing and watching the video.
Hey, three months have gone by. Just sayin.
To be fair the R455 is actually a Tri-ang design. Tri-ang and Hornby merged between 1966 and 73. My R455 has a metal drive cog and is stamped Tri-ang on the red plastic body. Mine has deeper flanged wheels so won't run on code 100 track well. I have a Series 3 code 125 layout that these run on best. The R355 Polly, R355R Nellie and R355Y Connie swapped names per colour over the next few years and were created by Tri-ang before the Tri-ang Hornby days. I have all 5 versions you mention and they are great to see on any layout. Thanks for showing off your models. Mon from Monsville Railways.
Great video, I like the old Tri-ang Hornby trains as well, regards from Canberra Australia

I had one of these as a kid. My was from the 'Rural Rambler' set with 3 blue coaches. The livery is for the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Prussian blue.

That loco is in an earlier box than the loco, it is a 1976- version. It would originally have contained a Nellie, hence the mystery name sticker. Hattons were still selling discontinued R355 Nellies in late 1976 - £3.50. They would also sell you a 1974 model Princess Victoria for £6.50, one of which I bought. Incidentally, the silver dome on 25550 has the same push-on plastic moulding as used on Lord of The Isles, only in that case it is brass in colour. If you find one unglued you can pull it off to find a standard Nellie dome underneath. I know these things...and yes, 25550 was Rovex's phone number. 25555 was the number for telegrams.
It's hard to imagine model trains once sold for those prices! Thanks for clearing up the engine / phone number. I was certain I had read that in one of two old train books I have, but darned if I could find it.
"The reason we are doing this is,,, [ ] ,,, and because i like trains"
I've been collecting these Triang models for a few years now. There are quite a few to look out for, Including the Blue Nellie, Red Polly, Yellow Connie, also the less common blue Connie and Blue Polly! Also around the same time were three black versions, the first with a gold BR crest, later with a transfer BR crest, and also a budget version which was completely black and even lacked the whistle! Then the green 27, the red with and without the chrome dome, and the last blue versions, one with yellow lining, one with gold. It can be quite addictive collecting them! Triang seemed to change from the bronze pickup, to the wire, and back to bronze again. Great models, and lovely to see them running so well on your video! All the best from the UK
Thank you. Yes, collecting the variations on those engines would be a hobby in itself. I rather like the green version. I'm going to break out some of my other OO gauge trains - but it may take some time.
Great video! Thank you! I had the blue 7178 loco with two 4 wheel coaches in the same blue livery as a kid, great loco, regret selling all my OO gauge stuff years ago, I'm now into N gauge due to space constraints.
Thank you! I'd like to do more with my OO/HO stuff, but I have serious space limitations too. At the moment, even N gauge would be too big.
The instruction sheet at 1:15 has the date 1st August 1972 stamped as 010872 which also corresponds with the ‘Hornby Railways’ era box and price .
I noticed that date while editing. And yes, the box should be a different design. Thanks.
The blue version is R255, with an X04 this is from 1976, with the can motor from 77 onwards
There was an earlier version of NELLIE. It was yellow, and called CONNIE. It may not have made it to Canada.
It may not have. Before Lines Bros went under, Tri-ang Hornby train sets were sold here in department stores - Eaton's, Simpson's, probably The Bay and I'm sure others - as well as in hobby stores. The department stores sold Canadian outline trains, while hobby stores carried more of the whole range. The Canadian range ended with the bankruptcy of Lines Bros and the department stores switched to Tyco or Model Power. Most vast majority of the Tri-ang Hornby models from that era that can be found in Canada are from the Canadian range.
Loved it. It's been 10 years since I was last there. Brought back memories of kayaking Huron just along that coast. V peaceful
Did you make this or the old ford?
Hello. The Mack truck is definitely a future project. I waffled over buying for almost 2 years. The Brono? Not yet - I'd like to get some painting practice in first. And finding time to do things, take TH-cam videos, is always difficult.

I think I like the red one with the silver dome the most. Although the blue is nice too. Interesting tidbits. I liked the final run on the track with each of them. The blue one looked great going around!
The red one is my personal favourite. I should have grabbed a few more cars to make the trains more interesting, but my original intent was a little different.

Nice job. But pls use a pusher to keep hand away from blade. A guard would be nice to. I hate the sight of blood 😒 😤
Thanks. Although it may not look like it, I am very mindful of where my hand is with respect to the blade. A few years back, when doing something for a friend, I did nick my thumb on the blade! Just a 3 hour visit to the Emergency to get it fixed up.
That looks like a great kit...of an ugly old truck...but so much detail. Always enjoy your delivery. Shades of another countryman aVe, but without the strong opinions and Canuki dictionary requirement 😀
You watch AvE too? He reminds me of some of the guys I used to work with when I was younger.
I like your light hearted approach. Loving all the Canuki references from my time in sarnia (and occasional trips to cottage near Tobermory). You have a new sub my friend. Gary, uk
Thanks. The cottage where I had my failed running session is about an hour south of Tobermory. (Or the Tub as it is sometimes referred too.)
@@thumbwhacker4845 mind those bears!
Mark of a good loco is that it can operate at slow speed...ie they were shunters...
Very nice video, nice to see someone look at our locos who isn't from the UK, personally all that steel track is better off being retired to non conductive work like use with Clockwork or battery operated locos as no matter how much you'll clean it and change the rail joiners it'll still be high maintenance and get dirty
Thanks. Yes, that track is in rough shape. Some of it is close to 50 years old, so I shouldn't be surprised. I am thinking of buying some Peco set track for a simple layout, but I am unsure if the tolerances in the turnouts would be compatible with my older pieces. That is something I will have to look into.
@@thumbwhacker4845 Hey mate. If you buy standard peco code 100 set track or flexible you will be fine. It's only the odd early 50s triang that may occasionally give you grief with flanges. Not enough to worry about. Cheers. Gary
@@thumbwhacker4845 I’m in the US and found some Peco switches at a hobby shop code 100 and haven’t had any issues with tolerances on my switching layout. I use mostly old tyco and bachmann cars from the 70s to 90s so peco is a good option for switches
Nice owl lamp! I can't blame any phantom who wants to keep it on. lol
It's a great lamp! I replaced the incandescent bulb with an LED to keep the heat down. I picked it up at a weekend flea near the cottage that used to have vendor who usually had interesting stuff.
The artwork from the airbrushing book was pretty cool! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! What are those couple of ideas?
One idea I've had since last year. But work, etc, got in the way. I'm torn to try it with using a real airbrush or using the computer.

It would be cool if you do a video where you make homemade cards. That one you showed briefly looked so cool! Anyway hobbies are good for the brain and heart (along with all the obvious other things).
I was actually thinking about a video for making an updated one using better materials. Physical materials like a nice cardstock, not better jokes. Play your (birthday?) cards right, and you too could get a card featuring America's Favourite Disgraced Entertainer! When's you birthday, miss?
