The answer is… an umbrella. A student starting out is just confused by all this extra information. Once a few different modifiers are tried / experimented with, then your students can walk down this list of questions. First learn to get your subject well lit and learn basic patterns like Rembrandt ant butterfly 🦋
Great instructors on Adorama. Thanks.
Lindsay Adler is phenomenal! Would love to see another Chris Knight collab!
Awesome!! Always learn something from your classes.
These are so helpful. Thank you for putting it out for free.
Excellent, as always, Ms. Adler. As to the word "specular", this is the adjective with the noun "speculum". While "speculum" makes some people think of a tool used by medicine men, it's just a proper Latin word that means "mirror" - the word got hijacked. So a specular highlight is a highlight "like a mirror".
Great presentation on different options!
44:16 The Inverse Square Law holds that: "twice as far equals ONE FOURTH the power", not "half" as Lindsay says.
Great Video!!
"This lesson taught me so much, especially about using the light meter, making the most of your light source, and ensuring the photoshoot flows effortlessly."
I am so impressed by Lindsay Adler's color photography. That RGB gelled lights shoot with those colorful shadows is so cool. I must try that.
Joe is best teacher ever!!! Modest and genius
This was Awesome. What kind of diffusion what that, that worked like Grand-ma's old Deep Freezer?
I'm remembering David LaChapelle's ad for Lavazza. His Commercial was often Editorial because people let him do whatever he wants.
After doing my studio shoot today, I learned some things that you presented here mainly about having a main light affect the background lights. This was so informative
I love doing that style of photography "action to reaction"
Congrats Dushawn, well deserved 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
very down to earth approach. Thanks!
Bravo!!! Thanks for the lesson!
Wow. The model's cheek masseter muscles were flexing more than a bodybuilder biceps. From nothing to BAM! They do a double biceps, she smiles for the camera. Excellent tutorial in such a small space. Great recycling rate on the flashes as we heard the shutter close often when you went through.
Watching rest of the video. Great work by Lindsay and team. Thanks.
This was really helpful! Thank you for the detailed information Chris.
I will check other videos also to get ideas for my next personal project. Great work by the photographer and Adorama. Thanks!!
I stopped watching Adorama years ago. My photography has accelerated immensely.
I love this. Been looking for an answer and never got a difinitive answer. Thanks Lindsay ❤❤
Great Video!
Watching more of the video. Great tips.
Great presentation, love the image examples. Couple of things - You can use the teleconverters with the 60mm macro lens if you insert a 12-20mm extension tube in between, great for studio stacking. With focus stacking or taking bracketed sets the cygnustech diffuser spills a lot of light out the base & back of the diffuser because its open. A fully closed in variation can decrease flash power needed by 3-4 stops (1/4power to 1/16-1/32 power), improving flash recycling times & battery life, plus doesnt cause small jumping spiders to move as much. Tripods are useful for shooting fungi in situ with ambient light & mood lighting. The 40-150 f2.8 pro lens & the 100-400 are great for dragonflys/butterflys etc
I am glad I went to sit in on this demo by Lindsay Adler. She is a natural at teaching. Her presentations are as well constructed as her photographic work.
Great demo! Really loved hearing about the thought process and the execution of what he was explaining beforehand.
love this setup, wish to try this weekend..
Thanks for the refresher course. Awesome work!!
On my light meter it’s hard to trust I get reading all over the place sometimes I keep the meter it the same place and dubbed the light and get the same reading so for me it’s hard to trust the meter, I I actually thought I had a defective light maker so I bought another one same thing happen
This dud is a light genus
Thanks for the class. Good if starting personal work, business, or hobby. Thanks.
Is it a white backdrop or a silver/grey colored one?
Really appreciate this ab. I shoot 6x7 film and just started 4x5 (errors hurt a lot lol) and I would normally use a digital camera as my Polaroid back. I have a sekonic L558 but as I am familiar with the zone system, I should have more confidence. Your example with the barn doors and blue light was amazing. I always wondered how these things were done. You are a very good teacher. You make things easy to digest. One question with strobes or continuous lighting do you always shot at the exposure the light meter says or do you adjust to the skin tone of the talent? For example for a white person you give more light (1/2-1 stop). Bless bro✊🏾
Loved the presentation. I’m sorry I missed it live and I have a question-how do you identify your subjects? Do you know who you are shooting, or do you have someone/something to help you identify them after you made the shot?
Excellent presentation and images! Practical techniques and tips that I can confirm work. Chris helped provide me a 'light bulb' moment for macro photography that really improved my images. I highly suggest checking out his socials and if you can, attend an in-person workshop, it will be invaluable.
Thank you APA and Adorama for the opportunity to present my work !! I had a great time
Great Video!
The resolution of the generated areas are so low that you could never get away with using the images for anything above small screen viewing.
Profoto not firing! 😮
Thank you Seth for bringing an icon of the contemporary photography to the set. Could you guys comment on the position of Jennifer's eyes in the sweaty profiles? In my work I have been criticized for showing too much sclera 😔. Kudos to Jennifer.
Joe, great presentation as always. However, you have to do something about your breathing, your mic picks it up. Next time, try to breathe a little quieter in between your talking, or ask Seth to monitor the volume on your mic.
Yes, I did watch this on my small cell phone last night when I was having trouble sleeping. Sorry I missed the live. I had to work last night. Seth you always amaze me how you manage to light someone. It's second nature to you. Reminds me of a friend of mine who was a very able musician. A friend of mine said he could make a washboard sound good. Seth, you have a way of pulling off a demo and teaching us something. I always learn something from you. Thank you!!! I hope you get some good rest.
Canon R5 and r6 ii. Sports action, sport portraits, events, portraits😊
It takes a special person to make such a video. The education you get from watching this is well worth your time. Thanks, Seth.
Once again Seth shows his ability to pivot during times of stress and chaos without missing a beat. Always moving on to the next step to make the image a small percentage better. This careful purposeful approach activates creativity. Don’t worry Seth you did better the 99% of us in a similar situation , and we are thankful for you. Please let’s see more of these freestyle vids as I enjoyed it very much.
Sorry I couldn't join live, I was out shooting with a musician. Watching now though, thanks for the interesting session
