    Advice require context, I agree. That's why I rather follow rules than advice. If you haven't already, I recommend reading Hagakure daily, until you can understand each rule. Not how they work, but why they were made. There are many that are applicable to most things (from memory): _"it is bad when one thing become two"_ _"the end is important in all things"_ _"when writing, one should act as if the recipient will make it into a hanging scroll"_ _"matters of great concern should be treated lightly. matters of small should be treated seriously"_ _"even though it enters into the midst of a thousand of birds, a hawk should gives no attention to any bird but the one that it has first marked"_ Give those enough thoughts, you'll start to use them in almost every context. I've been a painter decorator for a decade, worked in electronic for 5 years, and now I'm a developer, I followed these rules in every single job that I have had. _"the end is important in all things"_ this one is my favourite, it is not actionable, but it's a good way to see things. I did not skip my 22nd birthday, that would be weird, insane even, I woke up that day. So I should see my own death as part of my life, just as much as my 22nd birthday and not try to avoid it. This extends to all things. Halo 2 was taken offline, that's not a tragedy, that's not an external event. that's part of Halo 2's life. They might not sound like it, but I guarantee you can apply them to your work. If you understand that adding too much to a game can dilute it, then you already understand _"it is bad when one thing become two"_, for instance

    I disagree. Je ne suis pas d'accord. Same thing, 2 different languages, one is 6 syllables, the other is 4. That's a 50% increase in syllable from English to French, just for 1 short sentence. The worst is humour. I remember my younger sister watching Friends, often you could feel something was off. I've always loved when a game is released out of the blue with no hype train or dates given prior. I think everyone is sick and tired of these early access or alpha beta stages and a release being years in the future. Obviously Star Citizen would be the best example of a never ending development though their excuse is that they are creating something that hasn't been done before. This is kinda true for Ashes of creation it seems. Deadlines that force a game to release when its not ready, makes people hate the game or experience unpolished or game breaking bugs, breaking the first impression that I feel is extremely important when trying to create fans. I think most people can get behind a delayed release with no issue. From the day the game has an official reveal, it can't have more than a year before people can get their hands on it or else it will quickly get forgotten. I feel that after a release trailer if it takes about 3 months or so it can generate a healthy amount of hype and anticipation, even if the game releases a demo etc.

      @@Paris-STR Exactly. When a game is released without a long promotional campaign it feels odd to me nowadays. It's not bad, just unusual compaired to others. 18:50 is when I understood the power of this tool :) Based on my experience making maps on Farcry games, I believe that they're using something very similar, at least for the terrain. I had complete control over blur, and distort/erosion (I think that they had them combined in the editor). Seeing how Ubisoft works, it's not that surprising. I might have seen Houdini before or something very similar. I remember seeing someone putting down a cube, messing with a few sliders, and within seconds, the box was hollowed out, turned into a cage. The guy even managed to add more material to the edges and intersection. He was touching one slider and it had a huge impact on the entire structure. In the end, he made in 15 seconds a medieval iron cage with tons of details. Very impressive stuff for someone like me. A part of me wants to get fired from my job to do this full time. This weekend, I had planned to work more on my proof of concept on Unity, I'm too tired from my week to do so, I just want to unplug and watch youtube. They're paying me way too much for me to resign (plus, it's a cool job), but it's cool to know that if I'm getting laid off, I can afford to take 2 years off and work on cool stuff like that. I think that Houdini will appeal more to programmers than artists. input > apply transformation > trust the process > output I don't think many artists would like this approach, it can feel "out of their control" (even though it's not) as they might be more used to control every aspect however they want, in a more discreet manner. I'm glad I asked and I'm glad you made a video about it. This is really cool, if I can make terrains like that for my game, that'd be great. I have a ton of experience on Farcry maps so I know that I can make great environments. Which is great because there are so many things to figure out, that it's always good to know that some steps will be easier than others, it takes a bit of the pressure off :)

      @xanthosvouldis9065 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm glad you enjoyed it :) In fact, there was a whole presentation from UBI about how they used Houdini in Far Cry. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/NfizT369g60/w-d-xo.html You also make a good point about who would use this software. People who just want to "draw" so to speak might find this weird. If you have some technical background tho somehow Houdini makes sense. We call people who can work with tools like Houdini Technical Artists in the industry, since they have both technical understanding and an artistic touch. This is a blanket term though, since two TA's might have completely different workflows, skillsets, and specialties. I've worked with TA's who only do shaders, lighting, VFX, you name it. Very diverse field. Because the nodes in Houdini can be used basically for everything it does, the knowledge you build with it compounds to other areas it can do. E.g. if you learn how to use boolean nodes to make a cage like you mentioned, you can use the same technique on clouds, terrain, textures, etc. And despite that, there is so much depth in all of these fields that some people just go crazy deep in just one area and become mad specialists of it. It's beautiful.

      @@SLRModShop Exactly :) Usually TA's know how to code or script too, and you can use that in Houdini as well. For complex operations it sometimes makes more sense to expose the parameters of w/e you're working with and directly manipulate those in code. Fractals, repetitive elements, or object placement rules are often done like that.

    Multiplayer games became the default. Elden ring is one of the rare games that is created towards single player, but even that has multiple player added to it. How would games like COD or APEX work if someone has invincibility? People actually leave those games when glitches / hacks run rampant that lets players do this. Games aren't geared towards environments where "cheats" work anymore. "Cheats" when they only alter your solo game doesn't ruin the fun of anyone else.

    • @xanthosvouldis9065
      @xanthosvouldis9065 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a good point about solo vs multiplayer cheats, traveller. Cheats that modify stats need a lot of finesse I think. I want to share a good and a bad example of cheat-style stats modification. 1. Solo - The Laboratory in Total War Warhammer 2: It was a controlled solo environment where you could alter many stats of the units to a ridiculous extend. I personally didn't enjoy it that much, because I felt no purpose for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I didn't want that free update feature, but I felt no point about it. Conversely when they gave a single unit very high unit mass or absurdly long snipping range, it felt more fun because that's what those particular units were supposed to be good at to begin with. 2. Multiplayer - Versions of characters you can unlock in fighting games like Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, etc. : I loved those way more because it rewarded you for finding out how to unlock the character, and the character would tell a story with the absurd stats. Like a poisoned version that looked kinda purple, was losing health all the time, but was way stronger than the original character. Fun :) Anyway, thank you so much for watching the video. Hearing your thoughts on this means a lot :)

    Love the algorithm for actually promoting videos like this. I generally agree with the reasons you brought up, but in my mind one of the biggest reasons is also that we no longer can have secrets. Once one person figures it out, everyone knows about it extremely fast due to how the internet and news on the internet works. You brought up looking forward to a magazin that you had to get to get info on this, that feeling can not be replaced by TH-cam putting a video on your recommended page. To me, the best cheat codes are when a game has some physics to it. I remember spending so much time in Just Cause 1, just driving a jeep and colliding with lamp posts. A third of the time, the lamp post would get stuck in the car, break and you ended up with a fight between a free moving car and a free moving lamp post, sending both flying into the stratosphere. The fun came from the unpredictability of the outcome. If I was able to add cheat codes like faster cars, lighter cars, control over gravity etc, I'd have an additional 20 hours of playtime into this game! That's not nothing. And such cheat codes are extremely easily to code (just give control over a handful of variables to the player). Talking about dinosaurs in racing games... WipeOut 2097 on PS1 had a cheat code where your ship could be a fish, a bee, or a pig ^-^ I miss the silliness and the fact that you could never be really sure what you'd find in a video game. I miss how "close" it made the players to the developers. It was like a small attention, a small gift from the devs.

      Yeah, I see what you mean. Physics in games is always great for fun. I remember playing one of Trials games on the PSP for so long. Mind you, this was the demo with only 1 bike and stage. The physics and ragdoll behaviour of the rider when you crashed provided just endless entertainment XD Nowadays I think those fun easter eggs come mostly in the form of extra art. When I was working on Star Ocean 5 I remember seeing random doodles of chibi versions of the characters on the whiteboards. I specifically told the artists these had to go in the game. They said "oh, don't worry. We'll make sure they will!" Hmmm perhaps there is happy medium here where the game slowly rewards you with the knowledge of how to unlock the easter egg. I think it was in NBA Jam 2 for the mega drive, the game would every so often give you the codes to unlock all these secret characters and effects. Big fan of that approach

    I'd be absolutely interested to hear more about Houdini! I'm assuming you're working with coordinates based on what you're saying, rather than sculpting a shape. Same goes for the backend, I'd love to know how you're achieving low latency. I work with Ruby on Rails and NodeJs, but I actually don't know how I'd deal with a multiplayer game... You might not know how the team overcame some of the syncing issues, but if you do, I'd like to know more about that, too. Broadly speaking. My guess is that everything that a particular player does is buffered within a narrow slice of time (guessing, something like 12ms), timestamped and sent to the backend and the backend does its best to create an accurate timeline. But I'm probably wrong as it would mean that it would take ~24ms just for a hit to be registered... I have no idea ^-^ Thanks for addressing my questions, traveller!

    Fail at school, fail at school some more, assume that you don't like to learn, because it takes so much of your time, all you want to do is go and play video games, assume that you're lazy. That was my life back then. My parents didn't let me go to school after I was 14 so I started working right away as a painter decorator. I was good at it but hated it (also 2008 was right around the corner and it soon become difficult to find a job) Then I hit 19, met my now-wife, she had an internet connection and gave me her old laptop. From that point on, I watched thousands of hours of lectures on science, discovered RPG Maker (made few games but lot of cool stuff). Few years later I had also learned electronics (among many other things, like politics, economy and finance), and I opened a company. I had ton of fun. Then 2020 hit, it became hard for external factors so I learned HTML, CSS, Javascript, Vue, Node JS. I now work as a full stack engineer for a company based in the US, became team lead back in March. Having a ton of fun, making a crazy amount of money. All that to say, school gives many people 18 years to reflect on the concept of failure lol How many people still assume that they don't like to learn and are lazy, just because that's basically what was screamed at them for their entire life once they hit 18?! I wrote a paper talking specifically about that, it is read to every student every new year (September) in a school in the UK. It boils down to telling the kids who feel like they're failing to follow whatever they're interested in (football, video game, etc), and try to learn as much as they can on that topic, it won't feel like work and sooner or later it will pay off.

    Hi from down-under ! Watching reviews has more value when you are accustom to your favourite reviewer as they will usually point out the same things you would enjoy and be annoyed by the game, saving you time and helping decide if the game is for you. However when it comes to developing a game, I seem to understand your point how it is all pointless after the fact when it comes to already successful games. If you're developing a game based on other reviews of successful games you might miss the opportunity to create a game you actually love to invest in. I reckon we all know and see when a game has been developed with love and passion versus cold business calculations that usually suffer from terminal cancer. You gotta love them old games that didn't have anything to compare themselves with forcing the developers to do their "thang". They would end up with more creative games, capturing a fan base. I don't see anything wrong with games developed for a niche audience either. I'd argue it would be to their detriment rather than their benefit from watching reviews - might I dare say, even stir their game in the wrong direction.

      @@Zelink108 Good question, traveller. Story is one of the lesser discussed ones. It still suffers from the same problem though, regardless from what the analysis says you can never know if it's on point or not. It's just words that won't capture the myriad of factors that played into the final result. That is not to say that these presentations are not entertaining or do not offer good anecdotes, of course. Just that there is no game design value, in terms of a how-to or a recipe for good results. If you are interested in story-making for games, perhaps you will appreciate these: Fun story #1 : I remember watching the devs of Journey say that it took them a year after the game was basically done to get the ending of the game right. They had to add a whole new "chapter" to achieve an emotional closure to the story. Fun story #2: I spoke with a translator from Square Enix back in the day about the quality of english translations for FF titles. He said that they have really been trying to give a better experience in English. But no matter how hard they try, they will always be limited by the fixed format cutscenes and time allowed for each character to say their lines. This will inevitably create an unnatural sounding dialogue pace-wise, even if the text itself is translated perfectly. And then there is the issue body language and gestures that makes sense in Japanese, but not in other languages. Fun story #3: I attended the presentation here in Tokyo of the guy who was responsible for the story of a game I truly love, Soul Sacrifice for the PSVita. He mentioned that he had to write most of it without really having the graphics or gameplay of the game as a reference (since those were not done yet). You can imagine how that is less than ideal :) I got this story double checked with Inafune Keiji san, designer of the game of Megaman/Rockman fame, when I attended his "Inafune Juku" workshops. To me, game reviews are a way to get reminded of cool stuff you did in video games you love, but in 40 minutes rather than 18 hours of playtime. I value small youtubers way more than big ones. Your video hit my feed so congrats on the beginnings of YT taking notice! I'm mostly commenting for your stats. I would like to note that in most western nations game mechanics cannot be copywritten nor patented. The reason the patents get approved is mostly down to the underfunding of patent offices such as the USPTO making it so that the people approving the patents don't have enough time to look at them in detail. The USPTO is flooded with invalid patents that they can't keep up with and there's a maximum amount of time a patent can be pending. Thousands of patents are invalidated every year when companies raise the issue with the USPTO for further investigation. There's entire law firms that specialize in such patent disputes.

      The patent system is just fundamentally broken these days. It went from the idea of being able to protect an innovative idea until you made profit from it, to a system that allows big corporations to just shoot down the competition, be it through patent trolling (Aureal vs Soundblaster is a good read here) or because they manage to patent basic ideas. Take the recent Palworld vs Pokemon "patent infringement", which is invalid due to 3 reason: 1. Nintendo filed the patent AFTER Palworld came out 2. The patent they filed was for a system that already existed in gaming for over 2 decades 3. The patent is too basic, it basically says "a system where you can catch sth with sth" The EUGH generally just dismisses those patents instantly, like with Asetek vs Coolermaster, where they simply didnt view the patent as valid. But American and Japanese patent courts are sadly different here. Often these lawsuits are combined with a cease and desist order, so that the rival company cannot sell their product and then the case gets stretched for multiple years, until the rival company files bancrupty, even if they successfully defend themselves (this is what happened with Aureal vs Soundblaster).

Big fan of Asetek too, at least back in the day. I got their freezer box that kept my CPU at -4 degrees. Ah, good times.... You should have seen the rumours in this year's tokyo game show when everyone walked by the Palworld giant booth. Mad controversy. You make a good point about the spirit vs letter of the law.
