I remember I was around 7 or 8. I had started exploring an old annual of Year's Best Fantasy and SF from 1966,. This was the first story I ever read by Thomas M. Disch (far from the last). It might have been the second work of science fiction I had read at that point after Kit Reed's beautiful "Automatic Tiger". I've been wary about escalators and inordinately careful about my credit card use ever since...

Their time is running out.. Which is why they need “The great reset”… to buy them more time…but like the Flowers, after several Resets, this one will not be as effective as the others… There is no stopping it… The Vaccines were their attempt to get rid of as much as possible, but nothing can stop the what’s coming.

This story is amazing. Haha the Met Gala picked this story in a very… oddly fitting way. Such a good motif during this time where there’s such a huge wage gap between the ultra wealthy and the regular person.

I feel like the person who chose the theme did so with intent. It seems so odd to choose a book like this for celebrities to dress as in this time. It's almost spiteful towards the celebrities 😅

Do y'all feel the rage yet? Just came from a tic tok video telling me about this... they know that elletes garden is dying.. they know we're coming... to tear down the ivory towers and the circus they've created... now let us feast on the rich.

The idea of the interlocking machine room running for a couple million years and then stopping with a sudden silence is pretty epic. It brings to mind the halting problem, which is the problem of determining if a program will ever terminate and belongs to the very strange undecidable problem set. Meaning you could study a program forever or sit watching it run forever and never know if it will end.

This is SO FUNNY! As a second generation Russian-American, I confess that this collection of disparate words slung together represents exactly what I dislike about Russian literature. What's so great about The Brothers Karamazov, anyway? Or The Death of Ivan Ilyich, which nearly killed me on more than one occasion. I do appreciate Gogol's sensayuma in Dead Souls, but I'm sardonic that way 😊 ETA: Background music should stay there.

Mr. Hanson has a great voice, but he reads WAY TOO FAST about 90-95% of the time. It didn't matter for this story since I've already read it, but idk if I'd want to race through any story that I really like. Anyway, I'm glad y'all are doing this. Golden Age speculative fiction is my passion. You haven't done Rogue Tomato, have you?

It's not sci fi, it's what they call speculative fiction. I just found out myself and then I noticed him saying it at the beginning of a story the other day, ha ha!

There is so much stuff on the internet and even just on TH-cam alone, but it is wonderful to hear these stories being read. I would like to thank all of you who have worked on this and put it out for us to enjoy. A special thanks to Mr. Hanson for his lovely soothing voice. Many people read stories on TH-cam now but certain voices sound timeless.

I started listening to old time radio broadcasts about 4 years ago and stumbled across Mindwebs last year. I love it. Just wonderful. What I have noticed while listening to the voices from many decades ago is that many modern sci fi tv dramas and Films have been influenced by much older radio broadcasts. I believe that this story, the Hall of Machines, has influenced the development of a TH-cam phenomenon that is called The Backrooms.
