Thinking of moving to Thailand? There are a few things you’ll want to bring from the USA that can make your transition much smoother. In this video, I’m sharing 5 Things You MUST Bring from the USA When Moving to Thailand-essential items that are harder to find, more expensive, or just not the same once you arrive.
Here’s the list:

Large Clothing and Shoes - If you’re taller or have larger feet, finding your size in Thailand can be a real challenge.
Cigars - High-quality cigars can be hard to find or overpriced in Thailand. Bring your favorites to enjoy without the hassle.
ATM and Credit Cards - Make sure you bring U.S.-based cards with no international transaction fees for easier access to your funds abroad.
American Snacks - Craving a taste of home? Pack your favorite snacks, as some are unavailable or expensive in Thailand.

Why Thailand's Healthcare Surprised Me: My Honest Review
Good video👍 Learning as you go and coming to the same conclusion that all long term expats make go slow. Talking about the mundane stuff can seem boring but it’s forms a big part of living in any country so getting that bit right makes life a little easier.
Good Video The idea of'corruption' in Thailand is bogus (yes, there are some crooks who will try to swindle you but they are extremely rare, rather than the rule in the West.) A lot of it IMO is that the Thais don't regulate the life out of every aspect of life. Thais are allowed to work. If you are Thai and you want to earn a living selling something in Thailand, you basically find something, find an open area just about anywhere (including at an intersection) and sell it. In the West, if you want to sell something, you check your education and certification qualification, determine the zoning and regulatory laws around what you are trying to sell, spend A few thousand dollars for permits, licenses, certifications, training, inspections, and lease a place to sell it for a few more tens of thousands of dollars, and go out and sell it at 5 times what it should cost (because every step of the way from production to transportation to wholesaler to retailer all have the same enormous set of regulations and fees to administer & enforce those regulations ... in other words, you are discouraged, prevented, and sometimes even arrested or worse for even attempting to earn a living outside of the 'regulatory system.) I am not against regulations, when they make sense, but in the West regulations and the systems around them are mostly not worth their cost (and in many cases, just obvious ways to build a system that can be sold off to some elite 'Private Public Partnership' project that makes lots of money for the 'private' partners, and cost the 'public' partners a lot in covering risks and being the customers who are charged with most of the cost in producing the product they are selling and then charged again for consuming the product that they paid to have forced on themselves.) My local 20 Baht food stall at the small evening market that pops up every dinner time, doesn't need to go through 1/100 of the regulatory mess that a hotdog vendor in Toronto needs to go through in order to sell a CostCo-sausage in their $40K/year (the 3 or 4 months street food is even a possibility in Canada) licensed street corner ... nor does their food have to go through a corporate chain of production, storage, inspection, transportation, zoning, law enforcement, etc, all with their own regulatory overhead in order to end up with me eating that awesome 20 Baht Masaman Curry Chicken meal (less than 60 cents) that would have cost well over $10, probably closer to $15 in the West (as you point out, the water alone to cook the meal might coast more in the West than the cost of the whole meal in Thailand.) The 'rip off' is not in Thailand (or most of Asian for that matter,) the 'rip off' is corporate capture in the West.
great for me to see 16 days after arriving! BTW the dog arrived fine! might i suggest in your charles schwab brokerage, put your lose cash in the money market fund SWVXX, its paying 4.45% vs the interest you are getting on the checking account of .45%
That’s the important part!
I tried to go shoe shopping last week in Bangkok, and i wear an 11.5 shoe, so a weird in-between shoe size . After over 5 hours of shopping around, i only found 3 shoes that fit me. They are either too small or big for me
I just found your channel recently. Great information! I'm a 57 year old young female living in Chicago and I'm making the move to Thailand in July. Most people tell me not to but I know life is short- I just lost my twin sister to a rare disease and I've been taking care of her for 3 years. I'm not wealthy but have 200K savings so if I live conservatively with investing- I should be good even though people say it's not enough. You have to take a chance and live your best life because you only have one life. Thank you again
I think that’s amazing and I hope you have the best experience ever! One of the great things about Thailand is you can scale down a lot to fit in almost any budget. You’re mature enough to know how to handle your money. You’ll be great!
I also will get get social security but cant take it until 62 so I have to fund for 4 years without but I'm still going
Thank you so much
Just a friendly warning... you cannot stay off the tax radar by using an ATM. Any cash withrawal you make from an US financial institution is recorded, and will be flagged if you are overseas (part of fraud detection). This information is shared between the US and Thailand (part of ongoing efforts to counnter money laundering), so, if the Thai revenue service wants to get the records of funds you have been bringing into the country via ATM, it is not hard for them to do so. And, if you use the ATM frequently, to shift more than 10,000 USD per year, every year, from the US, into Thailand, you will likely get flagged, at some point, by a government agency, either in the US or in Thailand. Remember that all US citizens are required to file an FBAR with the US State Department, if they have more than 10,000 USD in foreign bank accounts, at any time, during the calendar year. Now, you do not need to file a FBAR, if you are just spending it all and not putting it into a bank... but, eventually, someone with official status is likely to show up to ask official questions about where those funds you have been moving overseas via ATM did go - and, at that point, it is almost guaranteed that the Thai tax folks are also going to catch wind of what you have been doing, and why. But, hey, what do I know? I'm just an idiot typing a TH-cam comment on my computer, since I have nothing better to do right now. Feel free to ignore, and move on! :)
Can you please make a video of different ways to transfer money from the US to Thailand. Personally, I use Schwab and Wise. Would like to know other ways for transfer.
The two you mentioned plus ACH when it’s large amounts for property purchase is all I’ve used and the best ways possible.
I just do wire transfers from my US bank to my Thai bank. It’s easy to set up. It’s reliable. Maybe not the cheapest. My US bank doesn’t charge for international wire transfers. If you are buying a car or building a house then wire transfers are an easy way to transfer large amounts of money. I know many love WISE. I tried setting up a WISE account and it was a disaster so I don’t use them.
As a large SEC licensed trader, Fidelity is superior to Schwab regarding money management (think ATM 🏧 card) 💯 Chase sapphire 🔥 Been to 57 countries, lived in 8
You forgot about extra large condoms. Me love you long time.
Isn't charles schwab the son of wef's klaus schwab
No, Charles Schwab is not the son of Klaus Schwab. Charles R. Schwab is an American investor and financial executive, known for founding the Charles Schwab Corporation
How about a villa?
You avoid the condo issues but face legal hurdles of owning land.
Be careful with Charles Schwab as several people have reported that once the company finds out you are living overseas they will cancel your account.
I live in Tokyo and Schwab knows that I live here. No issues Got the International account (I think that's what it's called).
The t shirts so right But bring the thin cloth.
Wow love it fantastic.
Speaking of big shoes, I’ve heard you should bring your own condoms as well 😂
1. Money. 2 nothing.
I knew cigars was going to be on that list.
Lotion, shower gel, seasonings, deodorant
I read about charlesschwab and canceled the debit card if you do a lot of transactions outside the US and don't have a balance of 25k. Idk if that's true, but that's what I read
Very occasionally I have issues with acid reflux. My first trip to Thailand I had an occurrence and every store I tried kept trying to sell me anti-gas medication. Finally found a pharmacy with antacids, tasted terrible and didn't work very well. Since then I bought some rolls of Tums and put in my suitcase. Another thing I couldn't find there were bottles of aspirin, I wound up buying the bubble packs of 10.
Not a cigar smoker, but a heavy vaper. My understanding is that due to the influence of the Thai tobacco industry, vaping is technically illegal throughout the country, though apparently people still do it at least in private, and some vaping supplies are sold commercially, though probably not of the highest quality. Next time I go back, I would try to bring my own batteries, coils and liquid with me, as long as it doesn't cause any issues getting through immigration.
Vapes are sold all over the place with many stores opening up and people vape in the open like crazy. While “technically” illegal, it’s not an issue at all.
Regarding the furniture, I saw IKEA billboards in some videos about Thailand.
That have a cool location in Bangkok and they ship. I’ve gotten a few things from them.
To bring to Thailand? Swiss cherry schnapps, French mirabelle plum brandy, a ripe Brie de Meaux, Polish smoked wild game sausage with juniper, German Pfälzer liverwurst, and a bottle of very good wine from Burgundy. These are things you should bring back from Europe, and I don't think you'll find them even in the USA...
great info.. I always wondered about getting cash. FYI, anyone with heartburn or acid reflux, try apple cyder vinegar (1 tbl spoon mixed with a glass of water per day). Had acid reflux for 20 yrs, 2 yrs ago started taking the apple cyder vinegar & not one occurrence of heartburn, not one! and I love spicy food. Thx for the video, I will be retiring in 2 or 3 yrs & this info is gold, as Thailand is calling me.
Opened my Schwab account last month. Also got a 2nd CC with no International Transaction fees. Thailand here I come.
What’s the kind of black shirts you buy on Amazon ?
Fruit of the loom “men’s ever soft “
Condo buildings need major periodic maintenance. How does that work.
If you had to come up with a large payment quickly (say $15,000 USD for a hospital bill), and you did not have a Thai bank account, would you use your credit card or is there a better way to make the payment? Thank you.
I’d have used a credit card from the start since I get points and day rate.
Bangkok Hospital does take credit cards.
Have healthcare insurance. Handled!
They don't sell Tums in my country, so I can't compare, but for the most stomach-related issues, including heartburn, there's a fantastic "Flying Rabbit" herbal emulsion which you can buy in every drugstore or even 7 Eleven or Family Mart. Works like a charm. I love it so much that I'm bringing a few bottles back home from every Thailand trip. Worth trying ;)
Thanks for the tip ✌️
I saw Heath from the TH-cam channel "from one end of thailand" got beetroot from a special store on Jomtien. Heath is British but he wanted beetroot and thus shared this hidden gem. If you need specific groceries from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) like beetroot or liquorice sweets then BRYGHUSET BAR in Jomtien has a whole store in the back with imports.
Thanks for adding!
Thanks, as always. We're looking forward to our move from the Middle East to Bangkok. Appreciate the lane that you're paving to help others out.
My pleasure.
Completely agree with large size clothing XXL from CA, and definitely shoes, as I wear size 13…..can never find in Thailand 💯. Bring sunscreen from US, much cheaper than buying there, electronics are cheaper in US. Very difficult to find anti-perspirant deodorant in Thailand, I bring from US. Fidelity or Schwab ATM card to avoid fees and is a must for expats living in Thailand.
Black Pepper Comfortable Sheets Good Deodorant Good Chocolate
Any chance you can interview a family that moved with kids ?
Yeah, I always bring Tums even for a short visit. They do usually have antacids at 7-Eleven, but they're not as good as Tums, in my opinion. The clothing sizes definitely caught me off guard on my first couple of visits. I'm 5' 5" and 150 lbs. I've been a medium at most for the past thirty years. I get to Thailand and they're like "2XL for you, pûy." I bank with USAA so basically the same deal as Schwab. Snacks... I very occasionally crave something from home, but there's a whole universe of new stuff to explore at 7-Eleven (HAM AND CHEESE CROISSANT FTW) and on the street (10 to 15 baht for a skewer of meat basically everywhere), so I'm good. But yeah, Villa has everything from Oscar Mayer to Old El Paso. I do miss Kraft Deli Deluxe American Cheese, though (it's just better on a burger). The crappy singles I can find, but not the 'good' stuff so far. If anybody knows where to get some in Pattaya, let me know. :) Oh, and while you may not find Dr Pepper in Thailand, pretty much all the other familiar soda brands are much better than in the US, even non-sugar stuff like Pepsi Max is somehow better in Thailand.
Yeah I laugh to myself when I see all of these foreign tourists exchanging their home currencies in Thailand. I just use my Fidelity debit card at any ATM. No foreign transaction fees. I get the local ATM fee rebated to me. That's definitely the way to go to get local baht. If I need to transfer money from the United States to a Thai bank account, I just use the Wise app. Very simple to use and the fee is usually a little over 1%.
Yeah, I use my schwab card to get reimbursed for the transaction fee here in Pattaya.
You get the best exchange rate when traveling with your home currency. Banks exchange rates are usually 2 to 3% below the mid market exchange rate.
I first thought of living off options premium and dividends but I am too young to rely only on trading only. I started a Roth IRA separate from my main account that I plan on maxing out every year for 25-30 years when I hopefully get older and I am willing to work hard every year to live this awesome life. Idk if it is worth buying another house in America as a home address but the headache of having a tenant is what stops me as options premiums don't break your sink.
i like your explanations, i tried to retire in Eastern Europe, but the infrastructure was too old and not modernized for a senior person. i really like the way Thailand is not ashamed of modernizing and providing all of its products cheap. i'm ready to find a place and retire in Pattaya / Jomtien.
Best of luck! 🤞
Charles Schwab is the only way to go Also do American airlines citi, Capital 1 venture Card. The best thing I've done Before I come to south east Asia Go on the carnivore diet And lost £125.
When I was living in Hungary, it was nearly impossible to get peanut butter and the ones that I can get extremely expensive and not very good at all. Can you get peanut butter in Thailand?
Yes we get it pretty easily. Only way the dogs take their meds…me too 😂
Hey Ramze -- This was a very informative video --- You did a really good job off the cuff. Mark Hanna
Thanks Mark 🙏
Hello. Joah from Phoenix Az. What about Hua Hin? Thank you love the channel! Please keep up the good work.
Hua Hin is a quieter Pattaya. If you want less tourism and less adult bars, it’s a good choice.
Ya I’m married. My wife would kill me even if I looked that way. Is it a fair value place? Thanks again
One of the cheaper expat destinations in Thailand.
This is exactly the same content, word for word as another channel....strange
I did just see another video pop up recently with the same title. Who did it first? 😜
Can foreigners actually buy land and a house in Thailand now? I thought that didn’t happen only apartments or if married to a National
There are grey areas of leasing the land long term or starting an LLC that owns the property.
@@RamzeTravels Ah got it
Observations are spot on! Affordable options are always available for the locals. Makes for a better overall experience when going out.
How are you going to buy a house when xpats aren't allowed to buy homes or land only condos in Thailand? Video on this wizardry soon!
Rammy, can you please drop a link to your travel medical insurance carrier. Thanks
I don’t have travel insurance. For travel insurance, I hear Safety Wing is best for short term. I am looking into Cigna Global for long term expat insurance.
@RamzeTravels I meant medical insurance not travel.
Love your videos. Don’t be satisfied with 6k subscribers! BTW, are you related to the Ramses Pharaohs in Egypt?
If I am, he didn’t leave me any money 😂
So no personal recommendations??!

This show is a must watch for new ex-pats to Thailand. I agree with him on the things to do.
