I am 93 years old and have listened to classical music from age 12. I was fortunate to have heared live in Laxmi Baag and Deodhar School of music. Essentially his style changed after 1960 same as Ust.. Amjad Ali Khan in 1980. In both cases they played for their satisfaction from within. Whereas they played for public afterwards. Yes. It was the golden period of classical music.
