I never knew what quill work was. I've made several powder horns with simple straps. Now, you have inspired me to get a bit more creative. Thank you for sharing your work! 44:12
@@donkaiser4400 you are most welcome. Have fun quilling
Quill work
I love your recipe for 4 years now. I love it.
@@yoyostitches that’s great
I cut up my cucmbers first can I still do this with them already sliced ?
I followed your recipe several years ago. I was unable to find a crock or glass container big enough so i bought a cheap mop bucket from Walmart. The pickles turned out wonderful and everyone loved them. Especially my grandchildren! I made a batch last year, however, they turned out too sweet and more like a candied pickle. What did i do wrong?
I also have a batch ready to can in 2 days. I have tasted them at day 11/12 and the sweetness is just right for our taste. Do I need to just let them sit till day 14?
Great video, thank you! Just curious if a sheath like this has some sort of hard inner liner that the brain tan goes over?
Thanks Randy. Yes the inner sheath is usually made of raw hide.

I just noticed her Alaska shirt. I was married 29 years ago in Nome, Alaska to my beautiful wife. Sadly, I just lost her. But at least I have great memories.
So cool. My son was there for 10 years and we would visit him.
oh yeah, I just finished day 9. I speared a few, chipped a few and left some whole. I have my Grammies recipe ( which is awesome ) but wanted to try the 14 day vs. her 45 day. So thanks for this.
@@lindapritchard5854 Great recipe....nice and crunchy. I am doing my last 20 pounds at day 7 today. It will be a total of 80 pounds for this season of sweets and 20 pounds of garlic dill and 40 pounds of chips, bread and butters for a grand total of 140 pounds in total for all. Whuff, tired. But now I have a lot for gifts and the food bank in our community. Thanks for sharing this fantastic recipe.
you are so welcome@@scottwright8594
Did you make the walnut dye or is it store bought? Thank you for your videos.
I make it. We have walnut trees on our farm. They are gathered and soaked for months to get a black sludge. Thanks for looking.
Hi. I’m hoping you see this as I have a question. I have made salves for several months now, and some people dry it vs using fresh. What do you prefer? Also, I used my crockpot with a large glass of my products in it, and hot water as a double boiler. Is your method better by direct heat in crockpot? And was it on low or high, for how many hours? I’m excited to make a combo salve again, as that was my first batch I made, this spring, from dried plant materials. Thank you
I south paw also
I have been researching where to get brain tanned hide want to start tufting and quilling I have the quills from wandering bull but no hide yet so any input and direction would be sooo appreciated thank you for your great videos
Best way is to search brain tanners on Facebook and Instagram. Circle s leather has great hides. I have lost their number but contact them there.
Where do you get your tin cones, and how do you get them to look aged?
I buy them aged from Brandenburg Storehouse Owners Mary and Darrell Brandenburg
Thank you
Stunning work.I am so glad you made a video so now it is archived forever seeing how traditional quill work that is museum quality using the same techniques First Nation peoples ancestors used.Much love and many blessings!
Thanks so much.
Best to only have music during times when you’re not talking, like for an intro, during parts of a video when you’re working but not saying anything, and during the outro at the end of the video.
Can I use apple cider vineger instead of white distilled vinegar?
I never have used apple cider vinegar on these . I’m sure the taste would be different so I would not.
Wow great video! I see that I have found you long after your last post...best shipping instruction I've see! Hope you do more. Thank you
Wow! I know the inner pith of sumac is dark yellow, but I didn’t know the red berries would also have a tan color. I’d have bet it would come out pinkish red! I make Native American crafts and I’m really looking to improve my authenticity. I specialize in Inuit material culture and tools, but I’m wanting to really get better with Eastern Woodlands items and ways since I live in Tennessee. Plains too!
That really makes it easier to dye, I thought you’d have to dye the leather before quilling it or very carefully apply the dye as to not stain the quillwork. Love your videos Mrs. Pritchard!
Thank you. And some people do dye it before but then you have to break the hide down again. I prefer after. Thanks for watching
Ohh yeah! I love sweet pickles. I wish I could have kept everything straight, got a bit complicated at the end. I’d be making a smaller batch anyway, but I didn’t understand if you keep putting more sugar every day in the brine or ? If so I wonder why the sugar doesn’t crystallize?
After you have the pickles in the salt brine and then the alum water and you have poured it off and rinsed with boiling water on day 10!you start the sweet syrup. And yes you add sugar for the next 4 days everyday and no it never crystallizes. Happy pickling!
@@lindapritchard5854 thank you so much! LOVE your quilling videos and this one, you’ve made the quilling very clear and easy to understand. I always had a hard time with the sewing and hadn’t tried it because of that. A big thanks Mrs. Pritchard!
This video is amazing! Thank you Mrs. Pritchard!
You are so welcome. Happy Quilling !
I prefer a sliced sweet pickle to a spear. Can I slice the cucumbers with confidence that they will be crispy?
Well let’s put it this way. I don’t see why not. I never did it so not positive.
Awesome ~ heard of this ~ but never seen it before ~ very 😎❤️
Just a question. I’m working on days 11-14. I had an emergency & had to leave my home for a full day. I missed doing day 12 with adding the sugar. Will the pickles be ok with them sitting in the pot an extra day with me picking up where I left off & just go forward?
Yep they will be fine. By this time they are pickled and just getting sweeter everyday. You might even taste at day 14 and decide if you want to add that other day. It’s up to you.
Thanks for sharing this video.i grew up eating these ,watching my grandmother make them ,she used a churn.they are so good haven't had any since I was young I will be making them now
Oh how wonderful. You won’t be disappointed. They are so sweet and crunchy.
It won’t change your bead color will it? Like stand the beads will it?
It might darken the quills a bit. But not much. I have to simmer the quills for hours to get color. And if you mean glass beads. No. They are glass.
Thank you for the information here! I so appreciate the knowledge!
You are so welcome
@@lindapritchard5854 Making the plantain and looking for jewelweed now! I just did Wild Prickly Lettuce the last 4 days...may have harvested too much lol.
Does anyone know a ratio on salt to water? I am just getting ready to make my brine.
Thanks, but it has little in commen with the originals. Never stiched through the hide.
All The other stitches are not through the hide. Just the edge. I learned from all the books that teach it. Are you a quillworker ?
I just spoke with a friend of mine who has been invited to many museums throughout the world to view original Quillwork and has seen many many examples. He viewed both techniques of sewing through the hide and just picking up a bit of the hide. I’m sorry but the originals you have to look at are only a few of the original pieces but as I stated both techniques were used in the 18 th century.
This lady doesn't show anything. I know just as much about making this as before I watched it which is none at all.... She does everything off camera and just explains what she did... Write a blog instead of wasting your time making useless videos. Show us how to get the plants ready in the crockpot. Show us how much oil and how to put it in. Show us how to actually start smashing the plants into the oil ... It's a video.... Show us how to do it. And what did you mean by whipping it? Did you use an electric mixer to whip it up ... Show us how to do it. I have never seen that done before and I'm not entirely sure what you meant.... Just put your camera on a tripod and video what you do so we can see it.
This is awesome thank you
You are most welcome
New sub glad I found your channel
Thanks so much. I really need to add to it. I get busy and for get to video. Thanks again.
God has put it on my heart to work with the land and what it has to offer me. I live in southeast Kentucky, and we have much plantain, jewelweed, kudzu, japanese knotweed, and all kinds of goodies. As I learn to work with these plant helpers, I grow more fascinated and in love with God. I am just in awe of the Creator's wisdom! Thank you for sharing and teaching me how to work with these plants.
I also used to do Native American bead and quill work before I had children, but I never did too much with the quills because I couldn't find any good books at the time. Wow! I am definitely subbing to your channel. Thank you so much!
Can you do this with any herb
I have no experience with other herbs so I can’t say how it would turn out.
We call these icycle pickles.
Hi Linda, just wondering roughly what the Jewelweed to Plantain ratio is that you used for this recipe?
I’d say about 50 -50.
Wow wow wow !!!! You are TRULY INSPIRING!!!!!! THANK YOU 🙏🏽 FOR SHARING!!!! thank you 🌸 I am now working on one.!! Me and my man Dustin go get porcupines he and my boys eat them .. our tahltan tradition .. I don’t care for them .. lol but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the quills !!!! I dye them .. I have my grandmother churn so could I use that for the cucumbers cause it's a 3 quart churn ?
Awesome. Sometimes when I’m making a small batch I have an old large crockery big bowl I use.
@@lindapritchard5854 I'm so very glad that I came across your video on the 14 day pickle that's the way my grandmother done them. Thank you so very much.
@@wandablackston564 you are so welcome. My mother taught me. And I am 71. So yeah it’s an old recipe.
Hello there - I have some natural powder dyed that my mom bought at a craft festival near where we live. I have blue, burnt orange, and a green. I'd like to use them to dye some quills I have but I dont know how. I've already washed the quills very thoroughly. I have a small crock pot. Any tips on how to do this?
Well I’ve only made dye with raw materials so I can’t tell you how much to use . If the blue is indigo is very involved but try the orange first. Just add water and make it pretty strong. Then simmer your wet quills on low overnight or until you get the color you want. If this works try it with the others. If it’s real indigo line I said it’s very involved. You have to use lye and make a stock. And I’d try the green with water too. Unless it’s verdigris then it needs to be in vinegar. Good luck.
@@lindapritchard5854 yeah I just mixed the blue and orange together lol it isnt blue at all. I wanted to make a pair of moccasins from an old picture and the quills are a blueish purple and some are dark maroon. But yes I see what you mean about the blue being harder to dye. So far these quills are super light orange, but they've only been in the dye for 15min. Thankyou for your quick reply !
If they are turning orange already they should dye ok. It’s probably Osage
@@lindapritchard5854 Yes they've darkened quite a bit they're looking very close to the color of the orange bottle. Very pretty! I have them in a small crockpot I started the water, dye, & quills on high but I will turn it down to low now so they dont boil
@@mgansworth78 yes if they get too hot you will ruin the quills. Just simmer them.
Excellent video thank you
You are welcome
Do we heard the cat "atchoum" at 4:25 (close to..!) haha!! 😝
Wow your work is gorgeous!
How nice of you. Thanks so much.
@@lindapritchard5854 I'm from Tuscarora Indian Nation, I've only taken 1 class about quillwork but my friend did collect a bunch of quills while on the road yrs ago. I washed them recently but havent tried quillwork again yet. How did you learn quillwork if I may ask ? It's a beautiful artform but takes work !!
Melissa I am self taught. Lots of trial and error. Many years ago I had no resources or books to help me but in the last few years I have purchased a few good books. A Quillworker Companion is a very good book and only about $12.
I melt steric acid first. It makes hot process go a lot faster. Nice looking soap.
For sure. I do that now after some of it did not melt. Thanks so much
@@lindapritchard5854 My pleasure. I really appreciate the hard work you put into making such a wonderful video!
All I can think about is what that process would have been like without those rubber gloves.
Honestly I have done it bare handed. Just touch them lightly. Lol
Good morning, Linda. I have made lye soap several times but get varied results. My mom asked me to make some again so I got to looking. My grandmother made it by the moon phase but I can not find ay info on that. My question s do you know. Dark of the moon is coming up this weekend. Thank you in advance. Thanks for the video. God Bless, stay safe.
Thanks for the video. God Bless, stay safe.
You are most welcome Joey.
Hi Linda. Am beginner. Thought herbs were supposed to be dry. Since you used fresh, do salves need to be refrigerated? Looking forward to used jewelweed.
You use fresh herbs when making an infusion. No you don’t have to refrigerate. The bees wax seems to keep it preserved well. I have some in my bathroom that is years old and never molded. Have fun.
