1. Basic Requirements for Au Pair Visa in Germany Age: You must be between 18 and 26 years old. Language: You need a basic understanding of German (A1 level), as the role requires some language ability. Host Family: The host family should have at least one parent who is a German citizen, or if not, at least be fluent in German so that it’s the main language of communication. 2. Finding a Host Family Use au pair matching websites such as AuPairWorld to connect with host families in Germany. Once matched, the family should provide you with an au pair contract which outlines your duties, working hours (usually 30 hours a week), pocket money, and any other terms of the arrangement. 3. Required Documents for Au Pair Visa Application When you have a confirmed host family, gather the following documents for your visa application: Visa Application Form: Complete and sign the form. You can download it from the German embassy website. Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned stay. Passport Photos: Two recent biometric passport-sized photos. Au Pair Contract: Signed by you and the host family. The contract should cover your responsibilities, working hours, pocket money (at least €280/month), and other conditions. Motivation Letter: Explain why you want to be an au pair in Germany and what you aim to learn. Arrival in Germany Once your visa is approved: Register at the Local Residents’ Registration Office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks of arrival. Apply for a Residence Permit at the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) if your stay will exceed 90 days. Additional Tips Plan Ahead: Start the process early, as finding a family, gathering documents, and obtaining the visa can take time. Stick to Your Duties: As an au pair, you’ll primarily focus on childcare and light household tasks. Language Learning: Take advantage of the opportunity to improve your German during your stay!
