Pro Level Lighting Breakdown for a Gel'd Beauty Shoot
Studio Lighting Recipes: www.allencooley.com/store/studiolightingrecipesvol2
Let’s break down this lighting setup step-by-step because there’s a lot going on here-and it’s 🔥. In this video, I’m walking you through how I used multiple light sources (with gels, grids, and modifiers) to create this dynamic and vibrant look.
We’ll cover:
How to read light in an image by analyzing shadows, highlights, and catchlights. 👀
The role of strip lights, octaboxes, and beauty dishes in shaping light and adding depth.
Why gels can completely change the mood and feel of your shots-and how I used yellow gels for this look.
This is the kind of lighting setup that works perfectly for bold, beauty-focused campaigns.
If you’re ready to level up your lighting game, check out my Lighting Recipe Guide linked above for even more setups and tips.
Let me know in the comments-what’s your go-to modifier? Or are you still experimenting? Let’s talk setups!

    What is the Skrim light doing to the exposure? Wouldn't the clamshell be enough?

    • @allencooley
      @allencooley 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      the clamshell provides a more direct light for the model, but even with that setup, sometimes there are some shadows that aren't flattering, or even the background is too dark. The scrim being there allows me to elevate the light in the overall space.

    Hi Allen, first I think Cooley is a lovely name you made up like you said, secondly, it’s great I found your channel, short videos but great on insights and nuggets of knowledge. I think you are one of the best out there. Now I have a question, the title for this video is “ the worst photography equipment, that’s metaphoric right, cos I am sure you are too smart to put down $1300 for a piece of equipment you do not need. Am asking cos I want to invest in one, really need it cos I think it’s an invaluable equipment that can open new imaging opportunities creatively speaking. Let me know what you think and Weldone for the great job you are doing! I guess I will be swinging next for the Elinchrom Litemotiv Indirect Octa.

      Yea I’m definitely being sarcastic. It’s just a really expensive piece of equipment but I really love it and don’t regret it at all. If you have the money to get it, I think it’s an easy decision to make but the price is definitely a barrier for entry. I appreciate the kind words btw, definitely hope to grow the channel over the coming months

      @@quanishamoody7770 yep! The characteristic would be similar with the punchy contrast, and the harsh drop shadows…but the edge of that drop shadow may not be as defined and the focus of the light hitting the “T-zone” of her face may be slightly softer depending on how deep that 7in reflector is. Hope that helps 👍
