where my love for san Francisco music of the 1960's will be seen and heard from rare tracks that I have in my archives....plus from other sources....
'' the unusuals '' - I'm walkin' babe 1966.
~ For several weeks now i've been going over various albums and got to wondering how non-san francisco musicians/singers/artists got to become a part of the san francisco music 'scene' and it's here that kathi mcdonald that big voiced vocalist for 'big brother & the holding co' got my attention...back in her native bellingham (washington) she had been in and out of several groups for many years...one was well known on that scene 'the bellingham accents' who later shortened their name to plain old 'accents' a flexible line-up brought about line-up changes but hereas 'the unusuals' they are kathi mcdonald/pat jerns/bill capp/laurie vitt/harvey redmond & vic bundy releasing this gigantic monster fuzzed-out garage blitz in early 1966 'babe it's me/i'm walkin' babe' panorama records ...play this loud and stay proud!!!! shortly there after a visit to san francisco to record more demo's resulted in a single for 'mainstream records' in '66 'i could go on/summer is over' (with one or two left in the can)...it's here that drummer pat jerns left and was replaced by gary ramsay ..of those tracks left behind (higher places/just outside my window' local band 'the new arrivals' caught hold of 'just outside my window' releasing it on south bay records late '66 (on the channel by the way)...kathi mcdonald was auditioned by big brother and joined the line-up in '69 and appearing on their two albums 'be a brother 1970 & how hard it is' 1971'....now get up and blast the stereo to 11 !!!!

'' the doobie brothers '' - beehive state '71.
มุมมอง 884 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
~ Taken from the bands debut album this track remains for myself one of its better tunes...heavier with a fuzzy-guitar through out it certainly stands out and far removed from the chart hits that followed...the band are tom johnson ex the commonwealth/the rivington quintet & the implicits who actually released a single 'give me justice/she's alright' almo international records 1965/pat simmons/...
'' west '' - general mojo's well laid plan 1969.
มุมมอง 11412 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
~ Nothing earth shattering here but a beautiful gem of an instrumental taken from the bands second album from '69 'bridges' epic records with the line-up of jon sagan/ron cornelius/mike stewart/lloyd perata/joe davis and bob claire and all produced by bob johnson in nashville...several members were from local san francisco bands such as 'the justice league/the crystal set and the we five' (with...

มุมมอง 12116 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
~ Not particulary rare (even as a single) but this i love as it's a throwback to earlier times with a songwriting credit of 'balin/slick & kantner' and no wonder its sounds so good! balin was back in the fold for the new album 'octopus' grunt records 1975 with a basic line-up of marty balin/paul kantner/grace slick/pete sears/david freiberg/john barbata/craig chaquico and the ever awful soundin...
'' dave mason & cass elliot '' - on & on 1971.
มุมมอง 137วันที่ผ่านมา
~ Dave mason ex u.k.band 'traffic' from 1970 onwards certainly carved out a grand solo career for himself....his first solo album 'alone together' blue thumb records 1970 showed he was heading in the right direction...for his second he came into the orbit of cass elliot now free of the shackles that was the 'mamas & papas' to form an alliance on the record 'dave mason & cass elliot' blue thumb ...
'' the folkswingers '' - raga rock 1966.
มุมมอง 17314 วันที่ผ่านมา
~ Here as a fun track are the los angeles group 'the folkswingers' not really a group but a bunch of top grade session musicians on a explotation album of raga influenced rock! this was all because of the byrds and their track 'eight miles high' which had writers claiming it was raga-rock with sitars but mcguinn and co hadn't used one as it was mcguinn's electric 12 string rickenbacker played a...
'' anonymous artists of america '' - live film chicago 1971.
มุมมอง 14414 วันที่ผ่านมา
~ Wonderful film of the ever flutuating 'AAA' who had over the years many line-up changes and it's here i ask does anyone have knowledge of just who is playing? i see trixie merkin on bass but others elude me...where do i start? a band or group of artists musicians from standford uni that got loosely together in '65 more an art band than a performance group that quickly made in roads into the n...
'' sopwith camel '' - treadin' 1966.
มุมมอง 16214 วันที่ผ่านมา
~ Here we head back to earlier times in san francisco with a non-album track from the hit makers 'sopwith camel' ...this was the flip side to 'hello hello/treadin' kama sutra 1966 and this single led to the release of the bands debut album in '67 with the tremelo to the max & a hint of the incoming psychedelic sounds... sopwith camel were one of the very earliest of the first wave of rock bands...
'' sunbear '' - friends 1971.
มุมมอง 16514 วันที่ผ่านมา
~ This my friends (sic) is a big load of utter crap! quite why fillmore records with that great producer david rubinson at the controls chose to record and release this garbage (along with the helen wheels single) is a mystery to myself....titled 'when everybody in the world is friends/anywhere at all' fillmore records 1971 & sounding like a loose re-write of 'get together' and 5yrs past its se...
'' dave & ginny '' - helplessly hoping live t.v.1970.
มุมมอง 15421 วันที่ผ่านมา
~ This may raise a few eyebrows in folk circles as its the first time on youtube for this wonderful clip of the duo dave maloney & ginny reilly filmed not long after they formed in early '70...here they sing a steve stills song taken from the debut album by 'crosby, stills and nash'...they met at the 'drinking gourd' club/bar on union street in the summer of '69...both were folk artists making t...
'' azitis/help '' - make that change 1974.
มุมมอง 9821 วันที่ผ่านมา
~ An interesting story unfolds here as the sacramento/citrus height's band 'azitis' change personel but basically keep their sound in check....initially formed in sacramento 1966 and naming themselves 'help' and later releasing a single under that name 'life worth living/questions why' capital custom records 1969....an album too was released 'azitis 'help' (yes the name changing is curious...)....

Ya gotta move to where the hype, and the business money is....*shrug*...
Don’t worry about me. I’ve always got it turned stratosphericly high baby! 🚀🖖
Definitely a decent garage sound here but tbh I really prefer "I Could Go On" from late 1966 & after the name change.
buona sera, se ha un paio di copie del singolo su Mainstream, sarebbe disposto a vendermene una, se e' M-?
i'm sorry to say i dont have any! try discogs!!!!
@sfscene7253 OK grazie lo stesso,e complimenti per il lavoro di scavo che porta avanti , sempre pregevolissimo!!!! Buon Natale!!
I knew Kathi, she was a beautiful soul.
I saw Kathi McDonald perform with Leon Russell and Friends at the Fillmore East in November 1970. One of the greatest shows I've ever experienced!
What a lucky guy!
I thoroughly enjoyed it
bad asssss!
your correct there sir !!!!
She had one hell of a voice 👏
My sister and I went to Roseville High School 1968-1970 and I do recall there were a number of young groups around the area then.
Was Sherry in the Dan Hicks plus the Hot Licks from 69-71
no she wasn't, only around for the 'original recordings' epic records 1969.
I have 2 kids in Utah. They will love this!
PS Randy Newman wrote it?
not sure why the Doobie Bro are singing about the Mormons irrigating Utah!
I agree with you. Their best!
and a happy xmas!!!!
@sfscene7253 thanks, for you too
;-)_;"'X
Check out Moseley and Darrow 1973
Nice groove here. 🖖🚀
The Beau Brummelstones!! Wow! Did the Way-Outs open the show?!?
Very nice. Never heard of this band. The song was composed by jazz bassist Steve Swallow.
Good instrumental. 👍 I really like "Summer Flower" from West's 1968 debut LP.
that debut is very laid back summer flower was a single...for myself dolphins is the stand out track! mind you tom thumbs blues isn't bad either!!!!
Do I hear Lynne Hughes here, love her voice
see the write-up!
What songs did Lynne Hughes sing in 1965 with the Charlatans
far too many to list here...she crops up on various tracks from '65 onwards after performing with the group at the red dog....
So many changes from this to final
Thanks for this. Tina was a magnificent singer. Their band was unfortunately overlooked in the ‘60s
please check out the live material i have on the channel.....david.

It sounds like a lost Shady Grove-era Quicksilver song, awesome!

Thanks for putting this out there! i was the lucky guy that found out about doug and contacted him to get ahold of these tapes which we put out on VG+. So far ahead that its unreal. You have a terrific channel here and i have learned so much. Many thanks!!
thankyou for the compliments it really helps me to stay the course! glad to have the mckechnie music here where it belongs!!!! david.
@sfscene7253 the culture would be diminished without your efforts and this channel. thankful for your work
@@tarotplane thankyou...
This is just great.... & thanx for this one my friend... Havnt been around in a bit, Im back now & this is a close one for me... As a former Berkeley resident, early '70s-'90, I can say that what u do, is a perfect reminder of a better time, a deep breath. & is Appreciated more than you can know~ 12/14/'24.....
"Spirit in the Sky" always reminds me of the time I graduated high school in June 1970!
great single!
To my knowledge: Ric Masten went through formal training to become a minister at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, and used music as a medium for his work. The band on this record was fellow ministerial students pulled together for the project.
thankyou channing for the reply and of course the information on ric masten...a strange acoustic based record with the track uploaded its heaviest moment...it must have been a great moment in the studio to get all the music recorded & was anymore unreleased fuzz-guitar stuff left in the can?....thankyou again david.
@sfscene7253 Hello again-- I was looking for a web address where I might leave a longer reply. To your question, I don't remember anything besides what appeared on the record. C.B.
@@channingbartlett3334 i can always be reached at my e.mail. ... sfscene@outlook.com david.
I remember buying an album of theirs at the Freebeing used record store in the East Village in New York. I initially thought what a wierd matchup, but did enjoy the music. Thanks for posting a memory of mine.
I hunted this down for years thanks you!!
it's my pleasure! david.
I saw them together at the Fillmore East
you were very lucky as i understand only one show played! david.
Neato!!
Good vibes!

Nice...
Mort came to my wedding in '99. He gave us the only gift that we still use every day. It's a nice bowl for fruit, etc. It's still on our counter. I saved his note that he gave us with the bowl. He played washboard at the dance. He was pleasant company. I miss Mort. He was a good guy.
some wonderful memories for sure....david.
So good that their appearance on Malibu U survives.
yes the 'frantic records' c.d. from 2010 had three video's that many hadn't seen before! david.
@sfscene7253 yeah, got that. Very cool
fantastic cover! The group then evolved into Glad and then Redwing....
Very nice indeed. Wow. The same Timothy Schmidt who later joined the Eagles?
of course!
Really like this! I was only familiar with the Beau Brummels' version, which I like also. Thanks for posting.
@@tinydancer62 glad you enjoyed it....david.
Is this Paint It Black? Rather puttied over the melody, I say. Anyway, yeah, I saw Harihar Rao perform, I think with Don Ellis Orchestra in 1969, and yes, in Los Angeles. A great ensemble.
yeah a good rip off i'd say ron much like the rest of the album...rao was good friend's with ravi shankar....
Pretty cool.
without Carol? shame
I was there!
Masters of exploitation...😅
The Wrecking Crew doing their own thing, love it!
it's not a bad album as these type of records go...
Can you post up any more of their songs, that would be cool. Thanks. It would be good to see Wendy and Bonny play some gigs, if they want to. Who is in the picture for this video? Anyone know? I wondered if it was one of the 2 singer ladies that started the band.
i have posted up all the crystal fountain tracks available...but the wendy and bonnie album is freely available on youtube!
This sounds like it was just recorded, so timeless.
and one of the very best versions i've heard....david.
