Just a couple of days ago I was thinking along these same lines. It is already being done with sound. By sending two out of phase ultrasonic waves to a particular location they will interfere subtractively with each other creating an audible sound just at that location. Anyone standing there will "hear voices" but anyone at another location will not. Ultrasonic waves cannot be heard. Imagine transmitting multiple powerful in phase microwaves from different locations to intersect at a specific point where their additive energies can disable or destroy an aircraft or missile, etc.
