Kim Jee-woon's "A Bittersweet Life" might come off to some people as a generic crime flick, and in some ways it is. However, there's so much more to talk about, in particular the skillful handle of physical and emotional violence, and that one little detail regarding the "love" that our main character, Sun-woo, might have towards his boss' young mistress... Which I do my best to refute. Anyway,...

THE PAINTED BIRD... and its Relationship to Violence
I've always described a Bittersweet Life as Snow white from the huntsman's perspective. also Shin Min ah and Jeon Ji Hyun put me on a path I'll never recover from and is the reason I've been obsessed with Suzy from the moment i saw her irl.
Good and such a depressing movie
I've read Jerzy Kosinski's novel many times and not once did I think it should be filmed or, if filmed, should be something I'd ever watch. The novel is horrifying. On my first try it took me a year to get through it -- episode by episode -- all the while asking myself 'do I want to go on?' I did go on, but it wasn't easy. As for the film, no thanks.
"The worst virtues humanity has to offer." You be the judge.
Honestly stuff Tarantino has done disturbed me more in some ways than war movies, at least some of them. Tarantino is purposefully trying to entertain and disturb almost, where as the movies about war are about things that actually did happen and we could possibly try to prevent in the future. We need to know more about what atrocities happened rather than watching imagined ones to be entertained.

This movie has a lot of layers to unpack. You have an interesting point of view. Iâd like to add each character in the film has their own personal biases, moral codes and ethics. We can understand their beliefs more as the dialogue unravels in the film. The beauty of this film is each characters beliefs are challenged by another characters opposing beliefs. For instance, when Aydin tells Nihal she is naive and too good hearted and it will come back to bite her eventually. There is an obvious truth here. And itâs later confirmed when she tried to help out Ismael & Hamdiâs family. Ismael throws the money in the fire. Only proving Aydinâs point. Many more examples like this too. The director does a great job conveying that life is messy and people are complicated. There is a lot of grey. Itâs not just black and white. I connected with each character in their own unique way. Amazing dialogue and amazing cinematography.
Es un peliculÃģn, lo mires por donde la mires. Hoy es la tercera vez que la he visto.
Excelente y maravillosa narraciÃģn!
I wish people would say if there are SPOILERS or not in their videos. Does this have SPOILERS? I havenât seen it, but still wanna know if itâs worth my money. Ty.
Barely any. Hard to spoil a movie of this kind.
I was heartbroken no Child had to go through all this evilðððððð
your right . Very depressing movie. Even tho it was a movie I wish I could care for this boy and keep him safe.
So, the thing about this film is that it's not just about Aydin. In fact, the characters are sort of right about each other. Aydin isn't the lone bad guy, they all have many issues. Aydin is right about Nihal, and she about him, but only to an extent. It is a very subtle film. And regarding the show don't tell thing, it's not all tell. Dialogue and behavior also show. There is a lot that can be read into, but it is a version of showing that doesn't just have one interpretation; the viewer has to really engage and make up their own minds, rather than the film "telling" the viewer how to feel. In fact, it is advanced showing, even though the characters are talking a lot.
I bought this movie a few years ago and never watched it. I did not know anything about the director at the time. I recently sold it. Then I watched Once Upon a Time in Anatolia this week. Wow. I am regretting selling this movie! ð Thanks for your analysis and review! Going to check it and Climates out.

The movie did draw me in and spitted me out in pieces. I still have the feelings / atmosphere resonating in me, and the faces burnt into my brain (I watched it 3 years ago!). There's zero romantic, sugary tone here, it's plain brutal in its honesty and realness (just like the director's other movie), and so rich emotionally a whole dissertation could be written about it. Love story? I'd say it's the beginning of a love story that was cut short too early before we could have learnt where it naturally develops.
South Korea makes the best movies, theyre going to beat Hollywood soon

I can't stand most tarantino films but there's one or two that are OK there's a big difference between tarantino and this director, tarantino has always glorified violence in a way that people find accessible, but serious directors make violence as real as as possible, I don't think violence should ever be sensational, violence is true horror and its happening as I write this to people in Gaza. True violence is sickening, but I believe we should see. It because it's not far away from us in one form or another
This was a real person. Could she have been a lesbian? Sure. Do we have any evidence of this? No. We should not make up BS about people.
actually good video, I need more of ceylan's movie reviews, keep up the good work.

What a soulful review and insight about the movie. It is one of best movies I ever watched and I am a fan of NBC. I liked your narrative. it is very poetic and profound.
The sad fate of the white crow - 50 Shades of Violence I also watched the making-of bonus DVD. VÃĄclav Marhoul, who is responsible for the direction, screenplay and production, explains what attracted him to the novel he adapted: Youth, hope and love. Unfortunately, I couldn't discover any of that in his movie. All I saw was oppression, selfishness and violence. Good art is an interplay of contrasts. If you show a bleak world, the hero has to be a bright spot. I can't remember if Joska ever laughed in the movie. When he's not crying, he has a grim face like the others. Some might say that a hero who laughs a lot wouldn't be the right choice for this topic. I disagree. The attitude to life of youth, however difficult the experiences can be, would always defy reality in the end, because children always have a certain naive positivism/optimism that is only lost as they grow up. In the making of, you can see exactly how Petr, the actor playing Joska, is always laughing and just wants to play football or climb trees all the time. He represents a child's attitude to life, as it should be. I think VÃĄclav Marhoul was simply too old when he wrote the script and shot the film and was therefore no longer able to put himself in Joska's shoes from the child's point of view. That's why his Joska is a resigned adult in the body of a child. As a reminder, Mr. Marhoul's motivation for filming the book of the same name was the themes: Youth, hope and love. I think he failed artistically with that.
Very well said. You must understand who those people are, doing everything to make us sick. This Vaclaf Marhoul is a joke. His movies are no art. There is no love out there. Only sex and violence is the official propaganda.
IncreÃble, mi amor! De acuerdo contigo âĨ.
Gran video
I do not want to burst anyoneâs balloon here, but these ideas are more than a hundred years old. That people are manifesting them today might be something of a renaissance. Yet, it is very important to know whose shoulders you are standing on.
Although the film lasted three hours, I didn't realise how it passed like a very gripping action film. I was sad when the film ended.
It is a very valuable interpretation video about a very valuable film. I liked it so much. Congratulations, Gabriel... ALI MURAT GUVEN / CINEMA HISTORIAN / ISTANBUL-TURKEY

i love this, truly

The acting is fabulousâĶ.all credit to NBC as he gets the very best from his actorsâĶ..Winter Sleep is awash with Huzun , a word the Turkish language uses to describe that collective grey, depression and directionless torpor that often descends on humankind as autumn turns to winter. The bickering and criticism both elevates and punctures the torpor, before those old simmering hostilities back down, retreating into to their corners till next time.

It always felt way deeper than just a gangster film to me. Perhaps it's just Lee Byung Hun that just manages to carry all this extra depth, but there's just something about it that always hits me so hard. I basically can't watch it anymore because I'll make me way too emotional for days after watching it.

Carlos Vermut es el mejor director de cine actual. Muchas gracias por el vÃdeo.
Excellent essay, I'm really excited for this one.
Anning and Murchison were real people, and this film uses them as a vehicle for a completely fictional plot. In reality Murchison was significantly older than Anning and already had an established interest in paleontology, in fact she introduced her husband to it. Anning was a woman who made major contributions to the field of paleontology, in spite of the obstacles of gender and class which she faced. I think these women deserved to have a much better film made about them, reflecting their achievements and not using them to create a misogynistic and fictional film, which assigns to them the label that they were just women and probably not capable of much, and were probably gay. I've no objection about making such a film with fictional characters, but not one which assigns a label which would probably have upset these women if they were alive now, and which diminishes their legacy, leaving them far more famous for being supposedly gay, than for their real achievements in paleontology. Victorian women had the most enormous odds stacked against them to achieve anything other than marriage and motherhood.
You should really watch âUzakâ itâs also a movie by the same director and the amount of depression in it is unreal! But for me thatâs what cinema is all about and the only movies i watch. Anyways i thought youâd do a great video about itâĶ
