"Visual Snow Syndrome" Casual Conversations 52 🧠 Dr. Jacqueline Theis, OD, FAAO
Summary of Interview with Jacqueline Theis, OD, FAAO on Visual Snow Syndrome
Meeting Purpose:
Katherine Snedaker, CEO of PINK Concussions, interviews Dr. Theis to discuss visual snow syndrome, activity pacing for the visual system, and eye care for concussions-TBI.
Key Takeaways
• Visual snow is a debilitating visual phenomenon that can occur for many reasons, including concussion. It involves seeing static-like dots across the entire field of vision.
• Visual snow syndrome involves visual snow plus other symptoms like photophobia (light sensitivity), nyctalopia (poor night vision), persistent afterimages, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
• There are different theories on what causes visual snow, but it likely involves hyper-excitability in the visual cortex.
• Activity pacing is crucial for recovery, including giving your eyes actual rest periods, not just switching to other visually demanding tasks.
• Eye care is extremely important for concussion but often overlooked. Ocular motor dysfunction can cause many concussion symptoms beyond just "blur" or "double vision.".
Topics:Visual Snow Syndrome
• Visual snow involves seeing tiny dots across the entire field of vision, like static on a TV. It can be debilitating and distracting.
• Some people are born with it, while others develop it after concussion, infection, substances, etc.
• Visual snow syndrome involves visual snow plus other symptoms like light sensitivity, poor night vision, afterimages, and tinnitus.
• Theories on causes include damage to inhibitory signals in the visual cortex leading to hyper-excitability.
• Visual snow likely involves dysfunction in higher-order visual processing areas in the brain, not the eye itself.
Activity Pacing for the Visual System
• Activity pacing is crucial for concussion recovery, including pacing visual activities.
• Visually demanding tasks like laundry and dishes should not be considered breaks.
• Take 1-minute eye breaks every 10 minutes when doing computer work.
• Gradually increase visual activity tolerance through "pacing training".
• Smaller screens, larger fonts, and masking parts of the screen can help decrease cognitive load when performing computer tasks and increase the endurance of activity with less symptoms.
Eye Care for Concussion/TBI
• Eye movements can provoke concussion symptoms, so eye exams may provoke symptoms.
• Visual symptoms usually develop within 72 hours and 1 week post-concussion to check for issues.
• If symptoms persist beyond 4 weeks, vision therapy can help. But access to specialty care is limited.
• Vision problems can be treated years later, but may take longer. Don't lose hope.
• Educating pediatricians and primary care physicians on the importance of vision and oculomotor problems in concussion diagnosis and management is crucial.

Enahnced Entopic Phenomena (Eye Floaters or Blue Field Entopic Phenomena) are also a symptome of Visual Snow Syndrome for people with healthy/clear vitreous humor in the eye. Did you know that? Because you said it is always a problem of the eye. But great video.
Dr. Theis is amazing! 🎉
Ringing in my ears 😮
Hello Martina, I had a severe tbi after a motorcycle crash 5th of Aug 2023. The last three days I have had lots of symptoms aligning with early pregnancy but not at the same time. I'm absolutely terrified. My crash almost killed me. I was placed into an induced coma that lasted 3 weeks and reversed after 3 weeks 2 days. I'm terrified. If I am pregnant, which I will test tomorrow, I am not sure if anything bad will happen. Do you have any recommended sources for me? I will retest tomorrow and contact the hospital I was admitted to, treated at and discharged from. I hope you are well.
Keeping up the hard work😅
Your recent viDeos are good. With some stratEgic editing, they have the Potential to Attract a wider audience aNd generate more engagemEnt.
thank you!💗
Thank you Dr. Wexler this was very informative 😊
Congratulations
Smart man. Horrible human being.
Car accident left frontal injury …. No care ..hospital no follow. Sent me home. I declined rapidly and didn’t know why. A nightmare began. It’s 15 years later and I still struggle. I’m a survivor. I was all alone and I prevailed Still have no brain injury care. Where I live there is none for me
So sorry to hear this . I had a car accident as well an sent home with multiple injuries and concussion ( TBI)
OMG, This helped me so much, 4 months into a TBI w vision issue. Seems to be getting worse, not better? Going to talk w a neuro Optamitrist.
Vision therapy helped me so so much! The local optometry school has a TBI program that has been sensational. I hope you are able to find help.
Is there a flier available to post at, and forward to, domestic violence organizations, near hospitals, courts, domestic relations law firms, supermarkets etc so we can assist in increasing the number of brain pledges to help learn more?
Is a VA PTSD BRAIN BANK doner card in development stage due issuingto each doner? Also will the donor's wishes for brain bank donation, be entered into a national database which would alert coroners / emergency teams across the country? I am signed up to be a VA PTSD BRAIN BANK doner (Navy Vet ⚓️) for any organs needed, not just the brain
Hi!, love the work. You might enjoy this channel 👉 #drjohnaking. I find him instructional and practical.
As a female who's had 7 concussions, this organization is so important to me. I've spent years having doctors look at me blankly or with looks of disbelief. It only happens to football players it seemed whenever I tried to find help online. Even a few years ago I found the local abi org didn't make me feel that had anything to offer. Only in the last 12 months I've started finding help and support from the Abi org, and other groups. I am also disabled and the line is still very blurred between my diseases and the long term affects of brain injuries. Things are becoming very obvious to me though. Finding the Pink group was super fantastic for my self worth as a woman. My biggest stumbling block I have now is how to talk to my GP (fam dr). I think many women with Abi are also dealing with mental conditions as a result of the traumatic experiences and also just the way they are treated by police and er with a brain injury that they are not drunk or on drugs and not dealt with correctly and can cause more trauma. Women who have been sexually attacked, sometimes to little is checked as far as whether there is a head injury just because there is no blood. Even surviving strangulation can cause a head injury and that is not paid attention to. I know I've had many head injuries that needed stitches and I was never asked or checked for concussions or questioned to check how my injury occurred when it was domestic. If I didn't press any charges then no one cares.
This is the first time I've ever seen anyone talk about strangulation survival can cause brain damage in the woman.
A police officer was taking pictures of my neck. I was alone with him in a dark room. He was using flash, I was in a bad way. He said to me in a joking jock way, those look a lot like hickies are you sure he strangled you? They look like hickies to me. I should have been in the hospital , instead in that dark room with a cop with no clue how he damaged me.
@@Witchlinblue I am so so sorry you suffered through violence to then have this horrific treatment by police.
@@Witchlinblue There is a large amount of research on the topic if you would like more information.
@@PINKConcussions yes I would appreciate reading anything about it. Regarding that officer, well that was only one example of a series of ignorance of the police force. They and the courts are somewhat educated now compared to then. Thank you for all the work you are doing.

We saw a neurologist, kept up with our pediatrician, & pursued every path we could. Everyone just shrugs their shoulders & wants to just treat symptoms, not dig further. Our daughter STILL has headaches 5 years later. Not ONE doctor has ever suggested a blood panel or testing to review endocrine issues for our daughter, who's had at least 5 TBI's. 😞
I was dyslexic as a child and got help in my early years of elementary school. This interview is so interesting because you mention auto immune disorders (I have asthma) and brain injury (I have PCS) and Long Covid (I have had for 8 months). It my symptoms are many and all a blur because PCS brain has been so much worse since covid. I pray you find solutions to help people like me. I belong to long haul support groups and PCS support groups, but have not had luck finding others who’s lives have been derailed by both.
Thank you for watching the show. And I share your experience of Dyslexia (but I did not get help), TBI and now COVID. I agree that research is needed and thank you for joining us on the show!
Thank you for addressing this. I have PCS for over 3 years. I got covid and pneumonia and was hospitalized for 2 weeks in May/June of 2021. I have long Covid along with PCS.
Thank you, Terri, for watching the show. I agree that research is needed on both together is important, and thank you for joining us on the show!
I'm a covid long-hauler and just had a brain MRI w/ and wo/contrast yesterday. The results cam back today as "unremarkable", i.e. nothing wrong. But I know this is not true. I suffer from compression headaches, paresthesia on the left side of my face, and tinnitus. How do I get the specialized imaging you described in this video?
Dr. Fong and Dr. Loewen are speaking in the show about fMRI - functional MRI.
Thank you so much for the great interview!
It was great to have you present your research and ongoing work! Thank you for coming on the show.
This was amazing to watch, so powerful. As a survivor it is also soo appreciated. One day the stigma of being the abused will be removed and the stigma will be placed where it belongs on the abuser. Bless you all!!
Thank you for all you do to help others!!
On the POTs part, its well know TBI has Nitrius Oxide deficiency. This is why most men with TBI are on Cialis "boner pills". For the up-regulation of NO. And this can be applied to women as well. Along with the inclusion of L Citurillene.
Thank you for sharing and watching the show. I hope you decide to subscribe.
We need a national campaign to force the medical institutions and societies to institute these treatments. Endocrine society obviously gave up, so maybe this is where Dr Morgantalers Androgen Society comes into play. And make the treatment, prevention and education mandatory. God forbid if you end up at a ER dont have a "concussion", or a Brain Bleed. these ER docs have no idea to run Cytokine, Hormone, panels. Let alone the use of Ketamine, Progesterone to stop the cytokines. Or use of Hormones, Fish Oil, Outpatient Ketamine, treatment of TBI. In the official military term, its a shitshow...But with Dr Wexler, Dr Bradford Garner at Mercy, Dr Mark Gordon, NP Justin Groce, Aspire REjuvination, Matrix, and Defy. Same rules apply: 1. Acute TBI ( Ketamine, Fish Oil, Progesterone, Thymosin Alpha 1 and D Ribose. Run the hormones, CMP, CBC, IGF1), 2. Post TBI Treatment ( Outpatient Ketamine, Fish Oil, D Ribose, 30 day course of Progesterone, Replace all hormones to optimal not normal, and use of Oxandrin for recovery, Magnesium L Threonate, Vitamin D, Vitamin C IVs, and Peptide Therapy). Thats how we have sucess.
Great interview!!!!
Thank you for your support :)
This was excellent, I'd love to hear from Dr. Wexler again!
She was on last week and I should have the video posted today!
Thank you, Dr. Wexler!!

Which type of doctor? Sorry I missed your question.

Please email me at Katherine@PINKconcussions.org.
I am a TBI survivor from multiple concussions and IPV. I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and PCS. I'm sure I also have PTSD. I'm not a veteran but is in a relationship with a veteran. I live in San Diego, how and where can I get help?
