The emotional landscape I think that with her new work, it will be difficult, but the family wanted to delay her departure. So this could possibly show us that they will be strict and they are set in their ways, but they still care about their household, servants, employees, etc.
can you please tell me which edition of the novel do you have? could you put a link to it?
I feel horrified at how Tom wishes to hurt the birds. I feel gutted for Agnes who ha to make such a difficult choice, but she did the right thing. For to let the animals live and suffer, a quick, painless death is mercy. When I heard this part, I started to tear up and felt this sharp pain and frustration at people who are so unkind and awful!
@@meganneuhoff1997 yes!! This was the hardest part of the novel to read!! And reading aloud makes it even harder!!! That was a tough choice but better than letting the poor creatures be tortured in such a cruel manner by a thoughtless boy!!
The uncle reminds me of the actor who plays Hamish in Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton. 😂
@@meganneuhoff1997 I hadn’t thought of this connection before!! But it totally makes sense!! 😝
(That their children are respectable…*)
When we came to the part about Tom, at first I was positively annoyed and the absolutely disgusted and angry after we found out we he’d be doing to animals. It almost feels sadistic to me. In a way we can see Agnes as a helpless creature. Like the sparrows, sang wonderful songs, felt the beauty of life and once she became a governess was treated miserably, being controlled and manipulated, almost like the birds being torn, and hurt. The way the mother spoke about the children’s disposition was a complete lie and resembles that of the traps the birds found themselves. Something is there for them, they seem hopeful and then all of a sudden, they are ensnared and torture. The same goes for Agnes. Being a governess is respectable and she had this idea that would be wonderful to help her family, instead she is trapped. It feels to me that Agnes might lose her mind in this situation. I can relate so much to her. As a teacher (8 years in teaching) we see similar behaviours. I know that there are children with no regard or respect for the life of animals and also the manipulation and the constant fear of having a parent berating and belittling you if you even dared to reprimand their children. And if you tell the parents, they always find a way to bring it back to and say it is your fault. (Just an extra note, there’s also a handful of amazing parents, and take the teacher’s observation into account, but what I usually find is that their characters are respectable, kind and caring.) The irony of the situation is astounding, since if you look at the children’s behaviour it almost always a reflection of the parent, in the book and real life.
I think the family where she is going to work, is represented by this mood of the landscape. They are serious, distant, cold and maybe even rude. I haven’t read the book, so I am speculating. I think this could also reflect on our main character and that her disposition might change, where she grows up, becomes more serious and aware instead of being oblivious and cheerful most of the time. 📚
@@meganneuhoff1997 that’s very perceptive Megan! Indeed, Anne Brontë (like her sisters) explores emotional landscape in her fiction! The outside world mirrors the character’s inner state! ❤️
I absolutely felt the sadness when the sisters realised that it was the last time they would have a moment like this they shared. I felt the same way when I got married and it was the just the me and my sister together for the last time. But now reflecting, when my sister visits or we go to see her, we absolutely love sharing our “adventures”.📚
@@meganneuhoff1997 that’s such a nice parallel! It’s the last time the sisters are together in this pre-adulthood comfortable space! Very special and emotional indeed! 💕
📖📚 One thing that I taught my 6th graders this year with Creative Writing, is that you can always find a bit of truth to someone’s reality. This was very abstract to them, but once I have explained it to them, the conclusion is that whatever it is that you are imagining in your mind rings truth to you and is something that your thoughts encapsulate and your are indeed creating another reality elsewhere. You can find, even though it may be well hidden, a part of someone’s mind and the deepest emotions they feel in a story. And sometimes you can see the direct correlation in their writing. I then quoted Albus Dumbledore; "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" This in turn shows what was happening inside of JK Rowling’s mind and the result is that what was in hee mind became a bigger reality. A reality that cannot be contained and we have international events celebrating Harry Potter, and it all started with an idea. Want to see reality, read fiction and see what people are capable of creating. Hitler is also a prime example, everything he thought about and wrote down ended up becoming the most horrifying reality. It was at first based on actual events, but fictional ideas which he wanted to see come to pass. Fiction has more power than we sometimes can imagine. Fiction to me is indeed reality, because with it, you can either bring history to life, your greatest desires or a horrible evil that can slaughter the innocent. It all depends on the truth you believe and the reality you want to create.
I will certainly embark on this new literary journey with you, not in real-time, but offline.

I couldn't follow the journey live, nevertheless, I finally finished this literary journey. Each one of us has his or her own pace.

A wonderful, simple clarification. The most difficult thing to do. Thank you so much.

Audiobooks are essential for moms! And I loved Babel so much. I only listened to the audiobook though, and it's the only audiobook I've known to include the footnotes too, which I loved.
Yes, the footnotes are essential to Babel! I loved it that they recorded the footnotes with a different voice! I’m loving the book so far!

What an inspiring reading journey you had.
Thank you!! 💕
Finis! A beautiful reading, thank you. Heretofore, S&S was probably fourth on my Mount Rushmore of Austen novels but I'm having to reconsider. The historical and cultural insights provided on topics such as etiquette, social hierarchies, travel, communications, etc., give context to the events and behaviors of the characters, furthering my understanding and enjoyment of a novel that I thought I knew well already. What really stands out though, is the joyful presentation and obvious love for 18th/19th century literature and Austen in particular. Dr. Moura, Fernanda, your enthuisasm is infectious. I just hope we won't have to wait too long for the next reading--another Austen novel please!
Thank you so much!! I’m so glad you followed the guided reading sessions and that they offered you information to enrich your reading experience of Austen!! 💕 We’ll definitely be reading another Austen novel!! Stay tuned!
In free indirect speech (present tense narration), should I turn "Oh my God" into "Oh his God"? E.g. "George is breathing heavily. Oh his God, is he going to die here?"
In free indirect speech, the voice of the character mingles with the voice of the narrator. It would be something like this: “George is breathing heavily. Oh my God, am I going to die here?” So the first sentence is actually part of the narrator’s voice, and the second is part of the character’s voice. It’s up to the reader to make these distinctions! I hope this helps! :)
Im finally caught up!!! This is the second time reading the book and I must say that I appreciate Austen's work much more after doing these guided sessions with you. Amazing stuff✨✨✨
This is great to know!! Thank you so much!! 💕

What a great idea for a Workshop-series! I read Midnight Library some months ago. I was hooked by the premise; it's pretty thought-provoking! It was interesting to hear your observations and your analysis makes me appreciate the book a whole lot more! Answer #1: Perhaps the reason why this metaphorical space is a library to Nora is because she had a connection to books as a young adult and a physical library in her life was her happy place: "...sat in the warmth of a small library...". Answer #2: Instead of a library, I imagine this metaphorical space could be a pub where I meet and get to talk to another version of myself, from an alternative life, different every time I come in. (Maybe we could even gather a small group of alternative selves and have a good time!) I think the premise would be really fun to explore in fantasy writing, where there is magic and anything can happen!
Thanks, Giedre! 💕 I love the premise of the book too! I agree with you! I think Nora’s limbo is a library because of her connections with books from an early age and because of how safe she used to feel in the school library! That’s an awesome idea!! Can you imagine talking to different alternatives of yourself while having a beer at a pub? That should be interesting indeed!! :))
You are so cute 😍❤️
Thank you 😊
