We have a channel about our off grid life in Northern Ontario but we are also looking into getting a toy hauler or converting a utility trailer into something we can haul our ATV's and also sleep in. Wow what an ordeal. So about 6 years ago we were visiting Mexico and had a car rental. We drove to Playa del Carmen for the day and had a great time but we ended up getting a parking ticket as well. They did not tow the vehicle but they did remove the licence plates and we had to go to the local police station to retrieve them. It was also raining like crazy that night and when we did get to the police station we had to wait for the officer that had our plates. We waited for over an hour but just paid the fine and got our tags back. I think that was the last time we rented a car in Mexico. Now we just stay in the Play del Carmen area and have no need for a car when we visit.

Be prepared for the "mordidas." I have driven all over Mexico in my personal vehicle several times. You'll be fine.

In my 40 plus years of visiting Mexico over 100 times,i have never rented a vehicle..and never will...rental license plates are a money maker for the corrupt cops..

Not a place to visit to expensive and rip off and beach’s all run by Mexico cartel barons. Do not visit

Thanks for sharing. I will visit Playa del Carmen and Tullum in April. I have heard of people being pulled over by police and that they got tickets for speedin (even if they did not). I probably take ADO bus and the collectivo to avoid these kind of troubles. Maybe two days a car for a daytrip from Playa del Carmen. Anyways - thanks for sharing. :)
