Dubia roaches can survive in a bioactive terrarium, but breeding them in this environment isn’t ideal. They prefer warm, dry, and controlled conditions, which differ from the humid, diverse microclimate of a bioactive setup. For breeding, a separate enclosure works best. As for isopods, you can find them through reputable online retailers, local pet stores, or reptile expos. Common species like Powder Orange or Dwarf White isopods are great for most setups, but ensure they match your terrarium's humidity and temperature.

@@zenhabitats one other question: we have a 5 month old so no substrate yet Can the isopods live in that environment, or only after there is substrate?

When separating mealworms for breeding, yes, you still need to feed them. They rely on their diet to complete the metamorphosis process. Provide small amounts of nutritious foods like carrots, potatoes, or apples for hydration and a dry substrate like oats or wheat bran for sustenance. As for timing, mealworms typically take about 10-20 days to pupate after being separated, depending on temperature and humidity. Once they pupate, it usually takes another 1-3 weeks for the pupae to turn into beetles. Keep them in a warm (around 75-80°F) and slightly humid environment for the best results. Great question! To check if your isopods and springtails are alive, gently lift the leaf litter and look closely in the soil. Isopods often hide under leaves or bark and may move slowly. Springtails are tiny and usually hop when disturbed-try misting lightly with water to encourage activity. If you’re still unsure, keep the substrate moist and give it another week; they’re usually great at hiding and might just be settling in!
