The Vintage Newbie
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 ต.ค. 2022
My name is Vernon Smith and I started collecting records back in 1988, when I was a 14 year old punk rock skater boy. I continued to do so until 2005 when, being from New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina came and wiped out all my albums. When that happened, I said to myself: "Vernon Smith, you can't rebuild your record collection at age 30, that would be ridiculous!"
Well here I am at age 48, rebuilding my record collection. Ridiculous, right gang?!
Join me every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as I go through the albums I've re-collected so far and tell wild and zany stories that center around those bands and albums. I'll discuss why they're vital (Vityl, get it?! GET IT?!) to my new collection and even talk a little about the New Orleans punk rock scene of the 1990's. Crack open a bottle of Fruitopia, heat up some Bagel-Bites, and get ready to...♫ solve a mystery, or rewrite history, duck tales, woo-hoo ♫...well, maybe not that last part. Sorry.

Ep.43: My Vintage Stereo systems (Part One!)
Well we’re getting near the end of my vintage stereo road. I’ve bought, sold, and traded a good bit of stereo gear but I’m at a point where (so far) I’m happy with what I have…as long as it doesn’t break, haha! So let’s take a look at where I’m at, and where I started.

Man, literally 2 weeks ago, I stumbled upon a channel "Skylabs Audio" and it stirred something in me to begin my own journey to put together a system myself. I just came to your channel today, and find someone at the end of their journey. Well, at least I can watch your past videos to get some ideas for myself! Wish you the best going forward!
Sounds like your Realistics are no longer number one in your heart?
@@renderingrocks Or maybe I’m just saving the best for last 😉
Nice gear, very nice 🖖🏻
@@wrxfrontier6584 Thanks a bunch! More to come
Man it's gonna suck you not being on here anymore but trust me, I totally understand. I'm just posting shit about anything & everything anymore! I just posted a video where I bassed up the family grocerie get'er! 😅 But wow, all the stuff you've collected since you started this channel is AMAZING!
@@chrisnunya7171 Thanks! Yeah I’m gonna miss it too but I might do something else here later this year
The woofer is a really cool find that i was unaware of. Others have said it, but the 7s and woofer really was like a low budget Bose Acoustimass system; granted itay have actually sounded better than the Bose setup!
I never actually heard it in the 90s, I missed out. I didn't hear it till 2013! Yes, I immediately liked that album and abit like Superunknown, I listened to it over and over for weeks. Now, I haven't heard it for years. Did I like it? Yes, but not one of my favourites but certainly a good album, some tracks stand out better than others.
@@AlexMitchell-i1g Their first album Gish is really good too!
@TheVintageNewbie yes, from what I have heard of it.
Nice. 👍🏻
@@chrisnunya7171 Thanks! Almost there!
Star Trek! ❤
@@JordanElliottMcClure I LOVE Star Trek! I actually drew a Strange New Worlds story in Star Trek issue #500 a few months ago (and have some more stuff in the works for later this year)
@ Awesome! Man that is super cool!
That sub is freaking awesome, too! It's a passive design, meaning it takes the low frequency , sends it to the sub via a crossover, and then sends the full signal to the speakers like that one bose system with the satellite speakers. NICE!!
@@Blownproductions Thanks! Yeah I’d never even heard of it until a week before I found it! I’d posted about the 7W’s on a stereo group and someone mentioned the sub so I went on a hunt for one and found it at a good price. Then when I got it I posted about it and no one else had ever of it either. But then over the next month two more people posted about finding the 7W’s and matching sub, crazy! I’m prolly gonna re-cap the 7W’s, I don’t want the metal M7’s to sound better lol
VERNON! I'm currently working on a video about a tragic accident that happened to my minimus 7's!😢 it should be out by the weekend. Those wood grain ones are AWESOME!
@@Blownproductions Damn, sorry to hear that! Definitely looking forward to the video and I hope you score another pair soon! 😔
@TheVintageNewbie a sneek peek! th-cam.com/video/vNzFXcdy3tU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5WEEGj9wxKoyNi9u
@ Do you need a replacement tweeter?
@TheVintageNewbie I can get one, but I thought of another cool thing to do with it. Guitar Amp! I'm gonna make it so I can put it back to normal if I don't like it.
@TheVintageNewbie it's actually weird because the Tweeter itself is just fine it's just the plate that broke
I had one of these back in the 1970s. I really like it! 👍🏻
@@williamscoggin1509 It’s one of my favorite receivers of all time! And my second favorite of all the ones I currently own.
I have these exact speakers..they are great and sound good. The woofer surrounds are rubber they wont rot like the foam surrounds do..
I dont know what "phonemic" means...sorry. 😉
Hey bud. How ya been? I was serious when I said I was done on my hi-fi setup. I've moved on to bassin' up the family van! 🤣👍🏻🔊By the way, nice speakers.
Been good, you? Yeah I’m done with my hi-fi setup too…unless I see something I like haha
I was hoping for the Nova 6! Maybe some day
@@renderingrocks Hopefully! I keep checking every couple of hours, haha
@@TheVintageNewbieI’m the same way, what do you think they are worth? There are two pairs for sale in PA now.
@@renderingrocks Nova 6’s or Boston Acoustics?
@@TheVintageNewbienova 6s
@@renderingrocks Probably around $100, that would probably be my cutoff
I purchased an SX 780 in 1978 at a small Northeast electronics chain called Tech Hifi. It was actually on sale at the time and I got it $75 cheaper than regular retail. I was looking for something around 50wpc, and originally wanted Marantz or Sansui. But I kept switching back and forth to the pioneer and made my decision. What a great receiver it was!
I just subbed your channel as #400 yippee ! ! !
@@OldSonyMan SWEEEET! I did a video on a Sony Walkman!
not sure that I can get past the "Tandy Battery Club" that I can remember (back in the late 70s) Realistic/Tandy products allways looked like 'Cheapened' look a like models which may make your bank manager happy but with 'ZERO' Credibility ! and 'ZERO' 'design' leadership ! The only 'Realistic' product that I currently own is a very small (form factor) amplifier that I got out of a car boot sale for £1 and I use to test equipment that hasn't got it's own amplifier. Oh Wait !...... I just Remembered '8-track' ! ! ! I have quite a few realistic 8 track machines for cars and a couple of home decks, which is a reflection of the fact that they supported the format long after the others had 'given up' and the kept on selling the 'Carts' well into the mid 80s ! Anyway I like your channel so keep on and you'll 'Get there' ! (It's allways good to hear as many (different) views as possible when 'making up' your mind 😎)
I owned one in 1976brand new in box retail price 259.00 brand new
@@ThomasEllsworth-i5k That’s awesome! Do you still own it? Or have the manual or anything?
@TheVintageNewbie no I had to sell it years ago now after my mom died but would like to find another one some day it was a great stereo receiver
I own this tape deck & love it BUT some tapes run perfect & some run slow. The slow tapes run perfect on another player. So I’m thinking that maybe a belt is stretched or worn down. Any info at all on how to replace any of these belts and if it’s even worth it?
Question: just picked up a Lab 300 off of FB mrkt place got it home and the cuing device is stuck in the up position and can't seem to to get it to go down. the cuing lever seems to be working but not sure what to do. any suggestions? Thanks in advance
12 seconds of this guys super annoying talking/lingo = thumbs down - change review
@@rockerdave1984 Boo-hoo
That is a two channel version. The 4 channel version was model Realstic 494. I have one restored.
It's usually not the receiver that needs an EQ but the listening room acoustics. An EQ (yeah, even this five bander) can be used with any amp but is most helpful with medium power to budget receivers that have only the most basic (rudimentary?) features. I purchased an ADC SS2IC EQ in 1982 and still use it in my hifi system, along with a Pioneer RG-2 expander purchased in 1981. The "usual" hookup for EQ's is to connect a tape deck to the EQ and the EQ to amp tape loop. Volume level on this video is kinda low.
I've replaced the dial pointer lamps with red and orange leds with success.
@@brunoprimas1483 Oh cool! How’d you do it? I have no experience doing that.
Out of practice, been a while? 😆 Dude, you're hilarious! 💯 But yeah man, that's a cool lookin' piece of equipment ya got there! And that 2 cassette tape ability is cool as shit! Be awesome for a reel to reel huh? 😉
@@chrisnunya7171 Haha, thanks! So far the only pieces I have connected to it are an iPod Classic and 8-track deck

@@Blownproductions I was thinking the same thing about me! Haha! Thanks, I’m running out of gear to talk about but I do still wanna do more videos
We need T-shirts with your face on them like the freeze pose at the end 😅. I found one of those speakers for 5 bucks at a thrift and sounds great, too bad it was just one. ✌🏼
@@wrxfrontier6584 Hahaaha those shirts would sell out INSTANTLY! Hopefully you can find another 7B, sometimes eBay has lone speakers (I’ve seen Nova 6 orphan speakers on there)

You’re right, I totally made it all up for some reason that only YOU know. Congrats on cracking the case 👍
Wonder if your guy has different colors LED's
He usually has different colors. I’ve gotten other lights for different receivers from this guy. For one I got Warm White, Green, and Cool Blue. I think that’s his normal variety you can choose from. Check his eBay store though
The Realistic Minimus 7 speakers were designed to work very well with the Realistic STA-700 AM/FM STEREO RECEIVER. The STA-700 is a lower profile receiver in a black case!
I just picked up an Sl-D1 today for free! It's in perfect condition and the dust cover tabs aren't broken. I brought one new in the late 70s and it served me well for many years. I've always wanted another to add to my collection. Can't stop smiling right now!
Americans are so "showbiz" and wacky.... unlike my fellow Brits when they review hi-fi. Anyway, get yourself a pair of Teac LS-X8. They are almost exactly the same as the Minimus 7 and sound excellent. They are sleepers, so hurry up and get them while you can for cheap!
Found some here in ebay UK, thanks for the recommendation.
Should have went with blue! But still look nice 👍🏻
I did blue for a different receiver (Realistic STA-77) and it looked cool but I don’t know how that would look for the Pioneer though

The Realistic Minimus series speakers got rave reviews for their sound. The Minimus 7 and 11 speakers were favorably reviewed and by adding a good subwoofer you could have a swell system. Their T-70 speakers also got great reviews for cost/performance. They used a labyrinth design as opposed to porting for very good bass.
Led t10 7v ?
@@Josef-jj.p I’m not sure, I got them from Joseph Mirabella, projectblk86 on eBay. Met him on a vintage stereo Facebook group and he was highly recommended by everyone when it comes to LED’s. He’s super nice and always helpful.
Some of us were fortunate to grow up a bit earlier (the draft not withstanding) and shopped for audio during the 1970's/80's. Almost all my gear is original purchase (by me) during mid 1970's to early 80's. The hifi heyday. Some swell hifi stores (at least in NYC) were; Harvey's, Tech Hifi, Crazy Eddie's, Great Sounds, Lafayette Electronics, The Stereo Warehouse, Audio Graveyard (across from Trinity Church cemetery), The Wiz, Uncle Steve's and Churchill Audio. If you couldn't get a hifi discount, you weren't tryin' hard enough. Man-o-Manischewitz, those were the days.
@@martyjewell5683 That’s awesome! If I knew then what I know now, even though I was just a kid, I would’ve loaded up on vintage stereo gear and kept all my records (my records all got flooded in Katrina 20 years ago). I’ve heard of some of those shops even though I’m from New Orleans. I actually have a Hall & Oates record that still has its original price tag sticker from The Wiz. Nobody beats The Wiz!!
@@TheVintageNewbie- Katrina musta sucked. Poor bastards goin' thru that. Betcha it sidetracked lotsa lives. In 1975 my first hifi "component" system consisted of a Pioneer 15wpc receiver, BIC TT and KLH model 31 speakers. All for under $250. It was boss, at least until the hifi bug bit me. It's a swell hobby, I dig it. You got a nice collection there. The funkiest receiver I ever seen (saw?) was the Advent 300.
There is someone selling his personal d2 on reverb for $380 not sure if that's fair market value or not. But it's in perfect cosmetic and performance condition. Not sure if I'll pulp the trigger on it
@@12_inch_spinnerz That seems a bit expensive, unless it has some super fancy cartridge and brand new stylus. On eBay they average around $200 plus shipping. Though I’m really hesitant about getting a turntable shipped. I’ve heard MANY horror stories about turntables getting busted up in shipping because they weren’t disassembled and packed properly
