Scania 142 project shh part 21
So i have the big boss helping me in this episode!! Sophie is helping me strip down the chassis and axles ready to go and get pulled apart. I am also putting new bushes in the axles ready for pre painting. Also Matt number 1 is up helping with his big king pin press to take them out of the front axle.
So i have discovered a problem with the chassis which over time could lead to be a nightmare. Im only going to rebuild it once so down to two rails we go! So in my discovery i found that the chassis we are using was a H chassis which means “Heavy” so in layman’s terms there is 2 chassis rails. But what happens is over time they rot in between leading to major corrosion. So a big thank you from Matt (another Matt) for helping me take apart these two chassis and gassing out the bad bits!

Still tearing down the axles, going through and seeing the shoddy mess over the years. Taking stuff apart and learning how it was done, and with my manuals it makes it that much easier (Thanks Richard!!)

So in this episode Matt and I are taking all the hubs off of the axles and seeing the shoddy work done by previous owners!!

In this episode we are reliving brake shoes Bolting stuff back to the chassis making sure it all fits. Think we may have to modify the new battery box but we will get there.

So in this episode we are pulling the rest of the axles apart. I have fitted the new air tank brackets to the chassis and pre drilling all of the holes of the steps/ battery box etc.

So in this episode I’m finishing taking all the wheels off and blocking the truck on blocks ready to take the chassis back off. Took all the drums off. (Not the correct way as Matt told me the best way is to hammer them on then they will eventually jump off!) everyday is a school day though! Enjoy

This episode we are taking the chassis for a test drive!! Only to the end of the shed though! Some cutting and welding going on. Big thank you to Richard for supplying a full set of bibles for the truck, now when Matt and I come to put it back together we have a map of the truck

In this episode i am tack welding the channels for the air tanks and Matt is with us to help line the fifth wheel up so we know where to mark the flitches and drill holes.

In this episode i have had some new parts designed and re made including, new channels for the air tank frame and also some accessories. A rear light bar and a susie bar. Thanks to Brian for designing them all.

Fifth wheel angles getting fitted in this one! Drive axle springs back from repairs shop and being fitted as well.

So in this episode i am measuring and lining up the fuel tank for spacers, and i am sorting out where the fifth wheel is going to go. I’m not sure if i am happy with the angle as it doesn’t give it the rolled look like it would have been. So that might get changed yet! Just the usual un doing nuts and bolts!!

So I’m learning as we go. Thought i would use the other springs off of the other axle as one of the originals was broke, but unknowing to me that the rigid springs are different. (Always a school day!) Still lining things up on the chassis taking pictures along the way for future reference and more stripping down.

Finally!! New camera, few things been drawn up for the Scania, few custom bits and a few bits to replace stuff that has rotten.
Fair play for deciding to do it the right way. Taking shortcuts always comes back to bite ye on the ass.

Just bear in mind how the 70s will affect your gear ratios. I have 315-80s on my 142 and it revs at 1700 rpm at 90kms. Your lorry could be screaming at 90 with those tires.

Hi there, you have taken on a mammoth project, people who do this type of job for a living would take about 18 months to complete. However, I wish you all the best with it all, will follow your journey to the end, I started my driving career on a 141 and am a Scania man thru and thru. Cheers.
