Saving battered 70 year old pages in The Manual of Prayers
Loose pages in well-used books quickly deteriote - they fall out of the book repeatedly, get trampled on or scrunched up when inserted back into the book, and then fall out again. After a few decades of this mistreatment, they're in a pretty sorry state, which is what I had to contend with in this book repair job for my local parish.
The Manual of Prayers was published in 1953 to be *the* parish prayer book, and while it's terrific that it still sees regular use every Lent, it wouldn't have survived until next Lent without some serious work. In this video, you'll see the lengths I had to go, since this book had multiple page tears, and the many steps I had to go through before it was even ready to reassemble! At the end, you'll see for yourself what a difference the simple act of paste washing a cloth covered book can make.
There are two more videos coming about this interesting slice of English Catholic history, specifically about two fascintating prayers it contains, one of which I'll bet you've never heard of. I'll post onscreen links to this during this video when they're ready.
In the meatime, if you spot your parish priest wrestling with,a book in desperate need of repair, let them know they don't have to put up with that any longer. If they want to know more about the book restoration work I do, they can take a look at the Bindery page on the My Catholic Library website: mycatholiclibrary.co.uk/bindery
Until next time, go in peace 😇

Replacing ribbons in a missal repair - St Andrews Daily Missal

Sometimes, a client’s ‘simple request’ can be fraught with hidden complexities. “It only needs the ribbons replacing, really” is what I was told, and yet, performing that task on this book would prove to be more involved than can be anticipated... In this video you'll see the book repair process, including replacing the Missal's ribbons, relining the spine, and upgrading the endpapers to nice m...
Removing mold from a family heirloom prayer book - Via Pacis Via Crucis

Not all book restoration tasks are the same, and some of them aren't even for books! In this personal project, I dealt with mold staining, 80 year old rusty staples, and created a unique case to protect a family heirloom. written by an intriguing priest! This little booklet, called 'Via Pacis Via Crucis' by Fr. William O'Grady, belonged to my Great Aunty Ayleen. Ayleen’s son Adam has a mileston...
Absolutely wonderful video
I like the the process of taking the old glue off, what i have done is clean as much as possible and then use E6000 glue... is that not smart? What do you use for taping the edges of the covers? This is incredible work.
Would love to see more!
More (and better) videos are just waiting to be edited!
I have a very old family Bible. The pages are so fragile that touching them causes pieces to fall off. Needless to say I'm not using the book in any way at this time. I just noticed the condition recently when I was looking for the page listing births/deaths of family members. It has been several years since I had last seen the page. I wanted to get an estimate of the age of the Bible. I had been thinking about getting some restoration done. Enough to keep the condition from deteriorating more. I'm not sure who I will pass the Bible to before I die. I have no family who would care for it so I was thinking about a museum. Do you have any recommendations as to who I should contact about the restoration?
Hi, thanks for your comment. There are a number of things it would help to know before I can recommend a course of action (like where you live), so do you want to drop me a line via the website and we can then email back-and-forth. If the pages are that fragile, there's probably not a lot any bookbinder/restorer could do about that, but they can steps to keep the bible together in one piece. As for where it can go, have you thought about either a church, or local historical society? It's interest may lie in the edition or translation, so that would be worth finding out too. mycatholiclibrary.co.uk/contact-us
