I am Kim Meyer, owner of Star Lit Hollow Farm in Brentwood, NH. I have over 30 years of instruction in the horse industry. I am a graduate of Colorado State University, with a degree in Equine Management. I grew up in Mass, showed 4-H, was a camper then an instructor at Bobbin Hollow Farm in Amherst, MA, went to Colorado, and worked at Moondrift Farm in Fort Collins where I was employed as an instructor and trainer. I was their Morgan Youth Leader and ran a very active club. At Star lit Hollow Farm we give English and Western riding lessons to all levels of riders, we teach roping and cattle working (in the summer and fall), as well as helping problem solve training issues for horse owners.
Petting with the outside hand to help your horse to calm down or slow down, while being ridden.
This tool of petting with the outside hand helps to slow down a fast horse or can be used to help calm a horse that is starting to get tight.
If you take a hold of both reins when a horse is stressed they can either take off or buck when their adrenaline gets up. This is a wonderful tool to help contain the horse while still letting him move. Of course if the horse is really upset then you would put them into a circle or a one rein stop.
The reason you pet with the outside hand is that it gives and allows the horse to bend into the inside hand as well as maintaining the inside rein prepares you to use a one rein stop if needed.
Once you have used this tool a number of times, the horse will learn to take comfort in it and know that they can move their feet and cope with the stress without being confined.

A couple of benefits of keeping your horse in a stall even though outside with a herd is best.
มุมมอง 475หลายเดือนก่อน
Keeping your horse outside is best, but there are a few reasons that keeping them in is useful. The biggest benefit of a stall is to know exactly if your horse is drinking, outside in the herd you have no idea who drank from the stock tank. Another benefit is that you are aware of your horse's manure, if they have diarrhea or on the other side of the scale tight hard balls, that would show that...
How to use your energy/presence to communicate with your horse.
มุมมอง 1.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Body language is the horse's natural language and they understand it better than we do. Horses use their energy to tell other horse to move out of their way, to move their feet, sometimes it is a simple shake of the head and sometimes they go after another horse with their teeth bared and stampede the other one. As horsemen we need to be able to also get our horses to move their feet and get ou...

An excellent stretch for your horse's back. Go slow with this groundwork exercise. Do not force it as you will lose trust with your horse. If the horse is stuck with the head down, stay there untill it feels right. Then ask for just one step at a time backward. Horses back up in diagonal pairs, like the trot. When the horse is soft and through he will go back in diagonal pairs, if he is stiff t...
Young rider- haltering help, trick to get your bridle yourself and way to make girthing up easier.
มุมมอง 4978 หลายเดือนก่อน
Sometimes kids (and adults) have a hard time doing up the halter buckle, I have found that if I have them get the hang of it on a gate first, it does not frustrate my lesson horses. When my students are young it is hard for them to reach the bridles by themselves. If you hold the cheekpieces together and stand on your toes you can gain about 6 to 8 inches of height. The young/short kids also ha...
Horsemanship/ Groundwork pointers for sacking out safely and the use of your energy while doing it.
มุมมอง 3168 หลายเดือนก่อน
We can never sack out our horses and get them used to every possible scary object. What consistently sacking out our horses with different objects and in different places, we build a relationship with them. We build confidence, that if we say things are going to be OK they will be. It is so very important to do the sacking out while standing still and while moving as well as from both sides of ...

Tool #2 to help redirect and check in with your horse's mind and emotions while you are riding.

It is so important to aways be aware of your horse's mind and if it is with you. It is equally important to have tools to bring your horse's mind back and help them to find what I call their internal self carriage. #horsemanship #horseriding #horse #riderawareness #horsetraining #horsecalming #horseselfcarriage

This is part #1 of a 2 part video set about how to redirect and check in with your horse's mind. When riding you can see if your horse is holding some stress by doing this exercise. You bring the horse's head around laterally and then switch hands on the rein on that side and pet the horse over the eye softly, if the horse is stressed he will tighten his muscles and fight the pet, they will mov...
Checking in with a "Pet Session" when giving lessons.

The power of a "Pet Session" to check in with the horse's mind during lessons and to show appreciation. When I am giving a lesson (or when doing groundwork) I check in with my horse to evaluate how their mind and emotions are. I want to see 3 things, 1. that they lower their head easily and that the muscles in the neck are soft. 2. that they lick their lips, which is a sign of relaxation and un...
A few exercises to check if your horse is OK with. Helps build horse's confidence.
มุมมอง 381ปีที่แล้ว
We put a lot of work into having our school horses feel confident with riders doing weird things in the saddle, that cause a bit of unbalanced feel for the horse to cope with. My husband and I do all of these exercises with the horses first before we would have a student do them. When OK the rider gets to learn how to keep their balance and use their core muscles. The horses get used to weird m...
Helpful items to have in your riding arena, if you are an instructor or even just a personal owner.
มุมมอง 64ปีที่แล้ว
Over my 30 plus years of teaching horseback riding, I have found these items to be very handy to have to help teach. Keeping them in the arena keeps you from having to leave your student unsupervised while you go retrieve them. The only things I forgot where the fly spray and the "neck strap" ( an old stirrup leather that I use around my horse's neck when teaching students to post and they have...

@@horsemanshiphelp Yes, indeed I am!
Although im a year late this is sooooo helpful. I know how to throw the saddle on the hard way but not the easy way. Im very short because im a teenager still and i ride a big 15.2 horse. Thank hou so much!!!
You're so welcome!
So great! You’re a perfect instructor for young riders!
Thank you 😊
Helpful as always.
Glad you think so!

I'm always happy to see your posts🎉
I’m more concerned about that ornament on the wall you are tying into. Is that just screwed into that cedar panel??? Slightest tug, and that comes out
Good point. We have a tire innertube on a solid post for when we used to take horses in for training and do their tying sessions. If I had a true problem horse I would not use that spot. I was just trying to show how to use the blocker loop and demonstrate how it works by allowing for a slow release that will help the horse to not feel too confined. Thank you for your comment.
@@horsemanshiphelp absolutely. Appreciate your talk
There should be no need to crosstie your horse. Your horse will stand still for whatever you want to do if you take the time it takes to train him to do so. People always seem to have tge time to do the wrong thing and should be making it easy for the horse to do the right thing. In this case stand still.
You do not tie a horse until he knows how to tie. Think about it.................
In our business we have many people come to us when things have gone wrong and we try to help fix it.
Thank you for sharing! 😊
You are so welcome!
Such a useful exercise. Thank you!
I rode earlier, and you just confirmed what I experienced today! Good term: stress lip.
How so?
I noticed Violet lowering her head when I patted her. Relaxing. Sighing. I was riding her myself, though.
Nice job Scout and great demonstrations Brooke!
You are such a good teacher--to your horses, to your students, and to US! Thank you 🎉.
You are so kind
Hi! Thank you so much! What do you do if you do not have place to spray outside where they can move their feet? We only have a wash stall with the hose coming from the ceiling. I get my horse to stand in there, but once I reach for the hose or start the sprayer, out she goes. I don’t want to cross tie, as you discussed. I move her feet in the aisle, getting the hind, when she walks out and then back in we go, and repeat, etc. Any ideas? Thank you!
Thanks for the question. I would either set up a hose outside, if that is really not an option, then turn on the hose and spray until the air leaves the line before you bring her to the wash stall. If isleway in front of wash stall is safe, keep her in the isle way (this way she will not feel trapped in the stall with the water ) and turn on the hose and spray into the wash stall for about 3 seconds then pet her with your other hand and do this over and over until she feels bored, then spray it a bit longer 15 seconds, turn off pet her with your other hand until she is bored, and continue until you can just spray it into wash stall and move it around let it hit the wall. At any time if she shows stress back off and move down to the easier level. This might get done in one day or as many as it takes for her to be OK. You will make progress if you end on a good note with something she can handle no matter how easy. The opposite is also true if you end a session on a bad or scared note, she will soak on the bad events and it will take longer to build her trust in you. Then put her in the wash stall and spray it 3 seconds again at a 90 angle away from her shoulder, not towards her head or rump, then praise, then spray hose for 15 seconds and on and on until she is not afraid of it being sprayed away from her. Do not hurry her and give lots of praise. If all goes well then spray her shoulder for 1 second, then praise lavishly and build up more and more, always ending the session on a good note. This might take a number of sessions, but who cares if you plan to have this horse for some time and taking your time will paid dividends in your relationship with her and will effect other parts of time with she she will trust that you will not get her in trouble or dismiss her fears. Please let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions.
Kim, Thank you SO much for responding! I will work on this and follow your advice. The hardest thing is trying to keep her in the stall and when she walks out, keeping her from getting tangled in the hose from the ceiling, while I’m trying to get her hind, etc. and bring her back. She is a very quiet horse. This is my biggest challenge with her in 9 years after moving to a new barn that has no place to hose outside. It would be so much easier to let her move her feet! I’ll keep you posted! Thank you!!! You are a patient, kind, excellent teacher!!!
Kim, my daughter also went to CUS, and got an equine science degree. I follow Tom D., Ray and Buck. I also am friends with Paul Dietz! He came to Wi to help me when I got my new horse when she was 5. Thank you SO much again for your time and advice!!! I’ll keep you posted!🙏🏼🐴💛
It sounds like we follow the same people and horsemanship styles. We have followed Buck Brannaman for about 30 years, we have had Greg Eliel , Paul Dietz, and Kip Fladland to our place to put on clinics, all horsemen that traveled with Buck. We are too small a farm to host him, but he did put on a colt starting demonstration at our place. I bet your daughter enjoys CSU. I loved it, great educational. Paul is wonderful, if you see him again soon say hi to him for me.
I know a certain NC place that could use this lesson. 😮😢
Kim, that was very helpful!

Excellent idea❤
Good tip! It's smart to give the horse grain AFTER being led to the barn. So many people screw up by bribing horses with a bucket of grain in the pasture. Then you'll end up always having to bring grain to catch the horse. It would be inconvenient if you have to quickly grab your horse in an emergency and you don't happen to have grain with you.
Very useful. Thank you.
Great demonstration, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I love your choice of the word "impulsive.". Also responsible. So nonjudgmental.
What a lovely horse!❤

Don't need groundwork, always turn so your back is to the gate, and make horse stand still, which is reinforced daily if you deal with them daily, otherwise whenever leading or working with. Back horse up, tell them to stand and unbuckle halter as you tell them to back, you take a step back. They have weight on back legs, and by time they decide to move, you are out of kicking range if they do take off. And keep fingers clear of buckles or you will get drug.
Always such practical, useful advice.
The horse out weighs you by about 10 times so the drag on the first rope would be about right. Us poor boys tie them to a truck inner tube and walk away for about two hours after each ride, they figure it out. Not near as much fun on a rubber band. Good info from you though.
Lol, exactly how all mine learned. Truck tire inner tube.
We also have one in our indoor arena.
Thank you for pointing this out and appreciating 'us'.
Thanks for doing a hard job to keep our horses in working order 👍
