I knew you're gonna change your mind. Usually when people say it's a character "meant to be unlikable" they usually mean an arrogant jerk, or a bully, but never a passive agressive type, which is closer to real life because of how common it is. An in games with a gritty setting, usually their overt practicality and nihilism would be favored by the plot as the right thing to do. You said it yourself, you expected the ending to be different because of the setting. As you can see, and as you will see, themes of all PM games directly oppose that mindset. Which is what I like about them.
