MY AIM
My aim is very simple.
I have a passion for plants and wish to bring you two types of videos.
FIRSTLY, videos that solve problems, answer gardening FAQs, provide shortcuts, tips and hints about gardening.
SECONDLY to provide introductions and information on plants that I enjoy.
I like all types of plants so my videos cover both garden plants and indoor/house plants.
I try to get straight to the point and provide information as efficiently as possible.
So I try to keep my videos short and sweet. I don't like unnecessary waffle and fluff!
If that sounds like the type of plant info you need and the kind of videos you like then why not subscribe? I am sure that at least some of my upcoming videos will be interesting to you.
I have a lot of future videos in the pipeline. As of summer 2024 I now have multiple video projects that I am working on simultaneously so that I can bring you interesting content in the weeks and months to come.
WHO AM I?
My name is Matthew and I started gardening at the tender age of 5 years old.
Carrot tops in a tray of water were the first things I grew. Of course carrot tops grow leaves but don't grow into carrots. But that doesn't matter when you're 5. Just a few leaves sprouting out of nothing can be fascinating.
I progressed onto seeds and started off some brussels sprouts and calendula. An unusual combination but both were successful and I was hooked. Christmases brought windowsill seed starter kits of Mesembryanthemum, French Marigolds and Godetia and a box containing some compost, a plastic pot and a huge bulb -a Hippeastrum (Amaryllis).
Over the years I have grown a lot of different plants. I have tried most types at one time or another. Alpines, perennials, annuals, carnivorous, cactus, patio plants, houseplants, pond plants, bonsai, spring/summer bulbs etc. It's a long list.
Do I know it all? Have I grown them all? Heck no!
There is always another plant, another technique, another idea to try for the first time. There are so many varieties of plants in the world that it'd be impossible to grow them all, even in 10 lifetimes. But that also means that it's impossible to get bored with gardening.
We may not always have great success with particular plants and every gardener has a failure or a poorly performing plant every year but there's always next season to try again!
I think gardeners are on the most part, a happy and healthy bunch. We're always looking forward to each new year with its opportunities to plant something new, to try again and to refresh. I am convinced that gardening is the greatest therapy of all.

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have seen a photo of one growing up a moss pole and it looked great. Yes, the leaves do increase in size when they climb, as in nature the leaf size increases to maximise the light absorption when the plants reach the treetops. I think climbers generally look better when allowed to climb rather than scrambling or hanging. But it is a personal choice. I would have grown this plant in the video up a moss pole had I kept it but I am short on space. But I am moving early next year and will (hopefully) have lots more space for lots more houseplants and I will get another of these and will grow it up a mosspole so maybe I'll do an additional video on this plant next year.

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes it should. Don't do anything drastic but just keep it slightly moist but not overly wet, in warmth with good light and wait for new growth. When growth restarts, you can gradually increase watering frequency and quantity.

    We have a really large terracotta pot that we can't put in a bucket, any idea how we can solve the problem?

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! I have not thought about outsized pots before. I would try placing the pot on its side and then placing some old rags or towels that were heavily soaked in the solution over the outside of the pot. Don't wring them out, make sure they are good and soggy. Leave for the solution to soak in and then see if the stains / deposits wipe off afterwards. You might have to repeat the process a few times but it will probably work. Goodluck!

      @plantwithmatt หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MichaelCutler-rx1xe A monster of a pot huh? I would say you have two options. Firstly is to spray the vinegar solution onto it and you might have to spray many times as its going to evaporate quickly. The second is to wrap it with the soggy towels or press them up against it, one part / area at a time. You may have to use thick string or even heavy duty cling-film to hold the towels in place. You can get thick plastic for wrapping from a packaging supply company as its used to wrap up boxes on pallets.

      @@jeffrob5791 The seeds will fall quite close to the plants rather than getting blown around as they are quite large, so they don't spread far in a single season. But the easiest thing to do is to cut them off as the pods start to ripen. Its not as fiddly or time consuming as it may sound as the pods are produced in clusters so its quite easy to remove them. Then in spring you can check the ground for seedlings. They are distinctive in appearance and can easily be spotted and pulled up.

    I purchased 7 tubers and planted them over a month ago and so far NOTHING.

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sadly, far too many of the tubers being sold by bulb merchants are dead. They are stored too long, and too dry and completely dry up. I'd suggest digging each tuber up and see if there is any sign of root growth or a shoot developing. If no roots or shoot emerging, scrape the outer skin and and take a small nick out of the tuber with a sharp knife. It should be cream in colour and quite firm, something like the flesh of an apple. If its dry, spongy and brown then the tuber is dead. If any tubers are the right colour, they will need a fair deal of heat to get them started. Place in a greenhouse if you have one or in the warmest spot you can find such as a south facing window in direct sun or even an airing cupboard or close to a hot water boiler / tank. The tubers do not mind direct sun and they do not need light to sprout. Keep them just moist (but not soaking wet) at all times and check for sprouting every few days. I hope you have some that are still viable!

    Many people report problems breaking dormancy with Colocasias bought as dormant tubers. The reason (sadly) is that most of the tubers are dead when planted as they have completely dried out during too many months of storage overwinter at the bulb sellers. I have received several myself this year that were ordered from reputable suppliers but were completely desiccated and dead upon arrival. I am in the process of growing several Colocasias from tubers this summer so will bring you some new Colocasia videos in the autumn of 2024 that will show you what live tubers look like and how to grow them in cooler climates.

    How to plant through seed

    • @plantwithmatt
      @plantwithmatt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sow in pots of multi purpose compost and lightly cover the seeds with compost. keep slightly moist at all times and warmth is needed for germination. Getting the seeds is quite difficult. The seedpods explode when touched when the seed is ripe. If you hand pollinate the flowers you should get some pods and can pick them when the seed is slightly under-ripe and place in a box or bag to dry and burst or place a paper bag over the pods when they are on the plant so the seed will be caught when they burst.

      If your water contains minerals it won't make any difference if you boil the water or let it sit -unfortunately. The only thing you can do is soak the pots in vinegar when the mineral build-up gets heavy. That will probably mean that you will need to clean the pots using this method, more than once per season.

    Why does this happen? Is it cause by water, sun or fertilizer?

      Hello Brian, its caused by a lack of humidity or water if the plant dried out for a while and its also caused by excess fertiliser. It is quite common on the old 'lower leaves' of Bromeliads.
