Hi, I saw you using Reaper in another video. I wonder if you are familiar with articulations when i comes to orchestral instruments? Say Violins 1 KS (KS=Keyswitch) and you can change the articulations when you hit a specific key in the midi editor in Reaper. Violins1 Sustain is C2 36 for instance. I'm using Stream Deck witch Companion and running Manjaro KDE Plasma and I would love to see this option/plugins in Companion. I saw a video that one guy had done this via Stream Deck "original" app and i plugin called "Stream Deck MIDI Plugin" by Trevliga Spel. Not for us linux users. Long question, sorry. Can this be done you think with Companion and this generic-midi-module - change a key on midi editors piano roll? Would be awesome. Thanks for great videos.
Awesome! I'm trying to learn how to control my Atem with ableton.
I tried this and it didn't work for my use case. Basically I need a button that would turn off the metronome in Ableton regardless of last midi message sent. The way Ableton is set up is that it's a toggle. Same note, same velocity but it either turns metronome on or off. However, I have a global STOP button that I want to tie an action to trigger a metronome stop. The problem right now is that pressing the stop button multiple times, engages global stop, but toggles metronome on and off. I can't have that. I'm trying to figure out if a variable can be tied to a background color of a specific button. Let's say, if it's green, the metronome stop is engaged, if it's yellow, it's not engaged. Any way to do this?
Sounds like an issue with Ableton. Maybe check on an Ableton forum or with customer support to see if there's a way to make the metronome control use unique commands for start and stop, or at least provide feedback as to what state the metronome is currently in.
How do we get Ableton midi into companion?
@@jay4kk Built-in IAC MIDI driver in Mac, or Install LoopMIDI in Windows. These can create virtual MIDI ports to allow you to connect 2 pieces of software together via MIDI.
This is pretty nifty. One trick you can do in terminal/command is press the up/down arrow, you can cycle between past commands so you don't have to keep typing the same thing over and over.
The MIDI commands are not typed at the command line, it's a shell within sendmidi.
How would you take a MIDI Input from a fader (I'm using a Korg nanoKontrol) and use those 0-127 values to set a volume level or rotary encoder position? I suppose I could make 128 different triggers per fader, but there has to be a faster way. Specifically, I want to use the MIDI fader to control an audio fader on my BlackMagic ATEM switcher. Any thoughts?
Easy enough using triggers and variables in Companion. If you want some help with this, HMU at my forum.
thank you very much. with your tutorial finally im able to work my akai apc mini
I love your videos. I hope you know there are people out there who really appreciate your work. They might not say it, but I know there are others out there. Thank you Andrew
Thank you for saying. Made my day!
Thanks for the great video. What happens afterwards when you finally recall this show? Specifically Output-wise. What if your show has mtx1-4 as PaL PaR Nearfil Delay (for instance). And let’s say the place where you are guesting has something else entirely. Is the normal thing for the local FOH to Recall safe all his outputs? So then do you have to start soft patching all your outs to match theirs? What about inputs? Do you then bring in their stage RIO and renumber the dante Patch? Do you have a video about “what happens next”? Thanks!
Hi, i want to trigger different buttons in companion by using a midi keyboard. I see that midi signal coming in, but how can i assign keys as trigger for a button, that triggers other hardware? And how can i use pads on a keyboard like the AKAI APC Key25? Thanks.
I did a video on creating a trigger from an incoming MIDI message. th-cam.com/video/Wgjdy9xk7AY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=d3ZCXlJFZ-vQfpoA
This appears to no longer work on QL Firmware 5.7 and up. Tested it on two different consoles and it wont work. Doing the same thing in Dante Controller works however. When Patched in Controller the Input is Named This-XXX, when Patched with Console its called QL1#1-XXX (Console ID is #1) Same for you Guys?
I doubt firmware has anything to do with it, my console is on 5.85. However, I only tested it on a CL, not a QL. Are you sure you're not trying to patch the OMNI inputs instead of the Dante inputs? If not, then specifically, what part of the procedure is not working for you?
@@Remotely-Possible It works now but in a strange way. If i do exactly what you did, the Console calls the Input "QL1#1-001 and there is no Audio present on the input. If i then unplug the Cable in the Dante port and replug it, the Name changes to "Self-001" and there suddenly is Audio. So it appears to be a Bug. Im using Ql1 on Firmware 5.7 and tested on 5.85 with same Result. If i do the patch in Dante Controller it works right away. So i will hust do it in Controller to avoid Issues...
@@MK1Records I'd love to see a video showing the exact steps I did and it NOT working. You may be right about this, but I still feel like it should "just work" if you follow my steps exactly. You can contact me on my forum if you get a chance to make the video and send it to me there. I'm very curious.
Thanks so much for this! I've been looking for an option to send generic Note On MIDI commands via Xkeys and Bitfocus. Could you briefly describe how to configure a local "Note On" MIDI command? In the presets in Bitfocus, I'm only seeing "MIDI In" and "MIDI Out". Thanks again for the work on this!
Thank you for your kind words. Note On messages are created the same way that you create any action in Companion. Create a button, choose the Note On action, and choose the note and velocity. If you need further help, I would be happy to help you via my forum. I have a chat function there and can help you in real time if needed.
@@Remotely-Possible Got it! Thanks for the intel, I'm new to Companion so still figuring this out. One more question if you don't mind; does Companion create a virtual MIDI device in Mac OS? Wondering where all of this MIDI information is outputting to. Thank you again 🙏
@@johnnyroofandthehottintwin9572 MacOS has built-in virtual MIDI devices. They're named IAC. Have a look at my other video on the generic MIDI module to see it in operation. th-cam.com/video/eElhGUr5ttg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0iF7fVNAJ6e9nLeO
@@Remotely-Possible Thank you so much!! Very very much appreciate your insight
Would it be possible to use this with a usb midi controller to control the faders of a yamaha ql console?
You don't need Companion in the middle of that, you can just use a MIDI controller directly connected to your QL to control the faders.
@@Remotely-Possible yep, just did that now with a Korg nano kontrol 2, a usb to hardware midi, and a program called midi patch to get its output to the midi cable. It works great, I haven’t messed around with midi with the ql too extensively. Is it possible to patch the korg to network midi to eliminate the extra usb to hardware midi device? I’ll look into it, I’m just new to it and I know you’re the expert on all things Yamaha control related.
@@mikeboltz If you want to get the computer out of the way, I would just use a USB to MIDI adapter from your Nano to the QL directly. You'll need a specialized MIDI adapter that supports "host" USB, like the ones made by iConnectivity, but there may be other ones.
@@Remotely-Possible oh thank you! I didn't even know that existed!
@@mikeboltz There's a bunch of them. I like Kenton stuff for reliability. e.g. kentonuk.com/product/midi-usb-host-mk3/ The iConnectivity stuff is amazing, but maybe more power than you need. e.g. www.iconnectivity.com/mioxm Honestly, though, if it were me, I'd purchase a controller that has actual MIDI connectors rather than just USB. Far more useful, and often cheaper than buying a specialized MIDI interface.
Is it possible to do this with Inputs too?
Depends on the console. Yamaha has enabled input metering on some consoles but not all. The RCP module will allow you to pick whatever is available.
Great work. Can't wait to use it on an upcoming job!

Thanks for taking the time to make this video
Does this still work? I've been looking around your website and can't find the module. My buddy and I have been struggling to get to level one to download if that is the issue.
Still works. Use the chat on my site if you need help! (The little balloon on the top right of the screen)
Excellent work, Andrew.
Glad you enjoyed it!
BTW, confirmed the Heartech WSG Bridge also allows patching Dante outputs to Dante inputs.
Wow. That's amazing, especially with the feedback. Super useful and smart idea.
Hi Correct me if I'm wrong, but this only work when connected to an actual console? I'd like to prepare a companion session but I don't have a console on hand and I can't connect the RCP module to the editor. Thanks for all your work.
Yes, you need to be connected to the console. Unfortunately, the editor does not support RCP commands.
Thank you for your kind words! Come visit my forum, where I’ll be happy to help you with whatever you’re looking to do. The reason I suggest the forum is I want to promote education through people asking questions and discussing things so everyone learns and benefits.
Amazing. Thank you for this. I have been trying to understand more to incorporate deeper functions into stream deck and this has really pointed me in the right direction. I did have a few questions though regarding deeply buried controls. 1. Automix. Are you familiar with the Dan Dugan Model K? I would love to have a stream deck+ controlling the automix, but have no idea how to map those commands to companion. 2. Recently ran into an issue on a streaming gig where I needed to turn the outport delay on and off depending on when a wireless shoulder camera was live. The video guys didn't have a way to do it so they asked if Audio would engage it. The issue was, that some of the record and stream feeds were on Dante, and others were Omni Outputs, making it almost impossible to engage them all at the exact same time. My solution was 2 ipads on the QL outports section.
AutoMix and Outport Delay are not remote controllable within the RCP commands. I can only control whatever commands are supported by Yamaha, and ATM, these are not supported through RCP. Using my MIDI module will work for Outport Delay, not sure about Dugan settings. you'd have to try it and see. MIDI module is available on my forum.
Erm, not really sure what the point of this video is, pretty simple stuff
Many people are still on v2 and don't know about variables and other new features, so it's just a simple introduction to v3 and the new RCP module. If you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see in a video for the RCP module, let me know!
I love Custom Variables but I don't understand why they didn't make them persist after Companion is closed. Then you can't us them to assign like a variable to button text for instance..because once you fire up companion it gets removed and replaced by the start one..
Thanks for the review! One question. I've built a series of buttons in Companion to automate my church's weekly TH-cam stream. Most of them are a simple command to my ATEM Mini Pro to AUTO fade between two cameras, followed by a command to one of my PTZOptics cameras to move the Preview camera to a particular shot. So far, so good. The problem is that I feared it would be easy for someone to lose track of where they were in my 18-step dance. As a result, I wanted to change the background color of the last button to be pressed (i.e., red) and reset the background color of the previous button back to black (the default). This last step is where my headaches began. I can turn off the background color of the previous button if I guess at it (i.e., if I press button #6, I can fairly confidently guess the previous selection was button #5). But it doesn't work if you press them "out of order" (i.e, #1, #3, #2). So I'd like to use a custom variable to capture which button I pressed last. Again, I found in v2.2.1 that this step was relatively straight-forward. My problem, however, is that I can't figure out how to use this custom variable to adjust the background color of a button, since the Change Button Background Color command doesn't appear to accept custom variables. Is there another approach I should take, or wait until this feature is added to Companion? Thanks in advance.
No clue, sorry! Maybe you could do it using triggers? Best to ask on the Companion FB group or their Slack group.
Can I do this on an Yamaha LS9? Thanks
Nope. LS9 doesn't have the capability unfortunately.
Thanks for the great work! I want to use the Yamaha Midi Module in Companion for Yamaha CL5 Remote Control. In Companion only the Yamaha SCP Module is available. Can you help me to get the Midi Version to work?
Thank you. I updated the link in the description.
@@Remotely-Possible Thanks
This is awesome! Nice work! Would you be able to do the same thing for the XR/MR consoles?
Are you talking about Behringer stuff? Not likely. There's a ton of software already done for them.
@@Remotely-Possible Yes! I've already got scene changes happening with Companion but the ability to map intricate things like you've done without needing to save and recall scenes is huge!
Really exciting! Can’t wait to try it out...are you able to trigger a certain bank of user defined keys? So I could have the physical ones on the console doing the A bank and I could have additional banks on the stream deck?
Should work fine, but I don't have a physical console to test with and the Editor doesn't "fire" UDKs. Also, you're not limited to just the UDK functions, you can basically do anything.
Totally cool.
Thanks!
