@jimroy6869 because it happened at night - 8pm start time. For people familiar with the UTV takeover event; this is what it's called. It used to start at 9pm but then the government started putting curfews on large events on the dunes.

@@happytimewithcarl do a search online for utv takeover or utv invasion. Those are the two biggest events for dune riding.

@tuanp447 There are many people who don't have paddle tires. They just air down and leave it in four wheel drive. You won't be as fast but you will be able to go everywhere.

This is Coos Bay Oregon. Campgrounds with sand access include Box Car Hill, Horsfall, Oregon dunes KOA Holiday, Riley Ranch, and spinreel. There are also great dunes just 20 miles north in Winchester. Campsites there include Half Moon Bay and umpqua dunes RV park. There is also tons of sand camping options.

@thelifeoffastony1157 that would happen if any suspension pieces broke. I've pulled it up with my winch when the car wouldn't start. However, I also have a flatbed trailer if that were to happen.

This is a large event and that was probably a big "group ride". The front of the pack is way far ahead and wouldn't even know about the situation. Most of these people won't even know each other. it's understood that a situation would be addressed by those involved, but it does appear there was pathetically little concern offered by people who just diverted around the carnage.

@@turbo-brian That's why we stop when there's trouble. If you can't see the rider behind you, then you stop and wait or double-back. If everyone does that, then the whole group eventually stops when there's trouble.

@@TheDedmiston Sorry, I did a bad job of explaining what these event "group rides" are like. I'm guessing you haven't been on one, either. Hundreds of vehicles with no real organization beyond when/where to start, people doing everything they can to get around/get ahead, it's every man for himself. These don't go down like the weekend trail ride with your close buddies. Just watch the video, I dunno what else I can say.

Logical choice is often superceded by crisis reaction. It's really easy to be critical when comfortably reviewing the big picture from an office chair. But, you're not wrong. Any single car could have stopped at the top in full view and minimized the situation.

You got to ask yourself, would you really want to stand out in front of a bunch of drunk people in that situation...

He is okay. He jumped off the quad and went running to get clear. No one was hurt. Everyone was cleared by medics before the sxs' were able to make their return trip.

The oregon dunes have turned into such a haven for dickheads, 25 years ago every single person would've stopped to help. Now they all drive like a middle aged woman trying to get into a Dutch bros drive thru.

This year's event is 4 1/2 months away. Not that I'm counting or anything.

Yes, they will announce the dates new years day but for the last couple of years its been the last week of June (ending the Sunday before the 4th of July).
