Hello sir, i really want to become a air force pilot but i think i won't quality for Rotc because i have 2.8 gpa. Do you think i have a chance? I also take flight lessons and i am the founder of aviaton club in my school. Do you think the extracellular activities can save the bad academics? for me personally i am fine with 2.8 but i dont know if its good enough for airforce
Great information thank you! After submitting for the October board, our son was just " reboarded" for the January board. Based on your video, it seems he may be considered for the space force. Is that a decent assumption?
Sorry my ADHD is kicking in
If you don’t make the cut for the October board (no decision has been made on your file), does that mean you will get bumped into the April board or will you get reviewed at each board between?
Bear Down!!! Matt. Love to see the Arizona Mafia doing great!! Do you know what happened to Capt. Barhardt? My folks felt good leaving me with Col. Cone back in the day. The process for scholarship today is different than it was in the mid 80's
With an early LOA to USMMA, do you think getting a nomination will be easier? Can the reps also nominate up to 15 or is it different than DOD academies? Given the disparity in SAT%, is an LOA to USMMA really apples to oranges for the other academies?
Nomination with or without an LOA is a virtual certainty given that an applicant does not have to reside in the same Congressional District as his/her nominator (a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives CAN nominate a candidate who resides in a district other than their own, as long as it in their (the nominator’s) State/Territory). Many Members of Congress nominate zero candidates to the Merchant Marine Academy even though they have 15 allocations. Regarding the LOA, it is apples to oranges because of the relative emphasis on the SAT/ACT and the fact that 20-25% of the incoming class at West Point, USNA and USAFA are recruited Division I athletes.
Thank you for the quick response and this channel
It is apples to oranges, as the Military academies represent branches of the Armed Forces. Merchant Marine academy prepares graduates for lucrative careers in the civilian merchant shipping industry, with a look at military service similar to ROTC. Very different.
When I was in high school in the 80's, it was generally accepted in my area that if your family didn't have "connections" to the congressman at the time (he was there for decades) don't even bother trying because you will not get a nomination. My understanding talking with young people today is that kind of corruption is still happening to some extent.
Very helpful. Thank you
As a parent and learning this process. I think it’s ridiculous that it weighs so heavily on the congressional districts. Has to be favoritism.
Thanks
These video has great examples. I appreciate the depth of the content!

This is super helpful, thank you so much. there are a couple things I am a little confused on 1. Do you think most type 1 scholarships will be awarded to critical rating 1-2 majors? I am curious whether the criticality rating matters as much as other factors (such as whether your major is technical or not) when it comes to scholarship selection. 2. If I wanted to pursue a non-technical major (such as psychology), is there an estimation for what gpa/sat/etc. would be required in order to compensate for the lack of a technical major in order to be awarded a type 1 scholarship? Does this even happen?
To all concern, I have a 12 Grader daughter presently studying in Ontario Canada and have a very good scholastic academic records as well from her robotic group enthusiast to Aircraft Maintenance apprenticeship as part of her Co-op / SHSM course as completed from last year in Milton District High School and now she is preparing for her next journey to her academy life to pursue her dreams to join USAFA and to fulfill her dreams as an Aircraft Engineer or Aerospace Engineer after her graduation on June 2025. I really appreciate any informations on how to proceed from start to finish the application. Do she need to find any recruiter to apply to USAFA? or She need to have the “NOMINATION” process? My worries is how and where we can get to start since she is coming from Ontario Canada?. I do believe that you should be under the state district for you to able to have a Nomination letter for the Recommendations. Any guidance to processing procedures is so much appreciated. Please kindly shoot me an email to (edcan1974@gmail.com) Thank you!
Would you say it is a good idea to enlist, then re-apply
Don’t underestimate the ROTC Nomination. My son was in a NJROTC unit in high school and got an ROTC nomination to USNA. His senior NJROTC instructor filled out a simple form and wrote a letter of recognition. Turns out he was competing against college ROTC kids as well. He was appointed in early November. Congress critter interviews didn’t occur until December/January. He received nominations to all three service academies even though he already accepted his USNA appointment.
This is the same crying when the schools went coed. Change is hard. 'Why aren't you still whipping the boys, Hornblower?'
🤣😂
Great information and thank you very much for putting this together! I did take my son up to Marquette University and visited their AFROTC. How does data science fit into criticality or does it not?
Data Science is a technical major with a criticality level of 2. You can find out the criticality levels of all majors in the AY25-26 Air Force ROTC HSSP Scholarship Applicant Guide.
This channel is a gem for people who want to not only better their chances to receive these scholarships or get into the academies but also just general good conversation skills you want to master as someone going into the military. Thank you -- we are glad to help young men and women like you! Best of luck in your pursuit of a commission!
I’m an Electronics Technician in the Navy. I’m comms and Radar. while i was in Hawaii i talked to a Captain and i realized what i wanted to do. Ever since then i knew i needed to the an officer in the Space Force no matter what
I'm a retired officer living next to USNA and am a long term sponsor parent. I was initially surprised by the high number of college experienced midshipmen. One of the Brigade Commanders during my time in Annapolis had three years at USC, were he was President of his fraternity, and was able to complete the credits for his USC degree while at USNA. My theory as to why USNA has a high percentage of college applicants and midshipmen is access access to NROTC programs. There are more Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC programs around the country (often with robust cross enrollment programs) the kids who are interested in becoming an Army or Air Force officer have access to these programs and quickly get committed, so the cost of exiting and delaying a commissioning date is high. There are fewer NROTC programs by design, so not as many applicants face the same type of opportunity cost with a later entry to Annapolis.
I got the principal nom about 100 years ago....thank goodness it took.
Dear Sir, My 18 year old son completed Oral Immune Therapy for milk allergies when he was 12 years old. Although he is safe from anaphylactic reactions, the allergists protocol is to prescribe an Epi - Pen. So simple stated, if an Epi Pen is a prescribed prophylactic, would this be a hard disqualification for Infantry? Thank you for your time and informative video!
For officer commissioning, (Academy/ROTC) having an Epi-Pen is a disqualifying condition and will require a waiver to accept an appointment/scholarship. Best of luck to your son!
The year after Black Lives Matter protests, the S&P 100 added more than 300,000 jobs - 94% went to people of color. - Bloomberg This cancer is everywhere.
My son was appointed early in the process, November, after receiving a NJROTC nomination from his high school senior NJROTC instructor who was a retired Senior Chief. My son was the cadet unit commander and a top student. He is 50% Hispanic. He also received nominations to USMA and USAFA by our congressmen. He didn’t have varsity sports and started high school during COVID 19 lockdowns. I think he benefited from being from a highly under represented state, NM. On I Day I observed plenty of kids of all races, but the the majority was white. Here is the breakdown: 15156 applied 1187 appointed 814 men, 373 women, 511 minority 209 from NAPS Seems pretty on par with national norms to this observer. Maybe some of the anecdotal stories differ.
Congratulations to your son. The stat to pay attention to is also " fully qualified candidates" which brings down the number from 15k to on average 2-4k (candidates who meet the qualifications, including medical and have a nomination).
Question 1 - So we thought we had a good handle on all of this. Then I start reading various comments and realize we do not! Our specific situation... son is now a senior at a military prep high school (Army). We understand the school does have the "Unit of Distinction" designation. We thought these were the only units that could give nominations (not all Army JROTC Senior Army Instructors can do so) and the SAI could only nominate for USMA. Am I reading correctly that the SAI at a Unit of Distinction can nominate to other academies??? Question 2 - We know MOC can now do 15 nominations per. However, we're being told that a MOC can only have a certain number at a given academy at a given time. Does this mean if a Congressman will still have 5 at the USMA in the upcoming school year then there is no reason to seek that nomination? Again - we thought we had a good grasp on all this and now... :-( Signed: LostAndConfused!!!
Richard, definitely understand how confusing this process is. Your son is eligible for the Army JROTC nomination only to West Point, unless he is in a unit of distinction, then he is eligible for a JROTC nomination to the Air Force Academy and Naval Academy. Regarding Congressional nominations, each Member of Congress has 5 vacancies for each Academy. Sometimes additional vacancies open up, and this is when you have 2-3 students fill those vacancies at an academy in a single year. However, there will always be at least one open vacancy. The key here to note is that students who do not have a Congressional nomination CANNOT compete on the National Waiting List. You do not want to avoid seeking a Congressional nomination -- seek all three! -Capt Dach
What is the race/ethnicity of those principal nominees that were rejected? Just a hunch here. Perhaps this should be investigated by congress.
@@cirquemagic yep. I wanna know. If it’s not due to this then prove it otherwise. Have personal experience in my family of these sorts of things derailing admission to competitive graduate schools even 25 years ago, and it’s much worse now. But if you bring it up, it will just be dismissed as “diversity.”
Do you see a particular weighting regarding admissions decisions at the Naval Academy? For example, our son is a strong athlete but has yet to gain extracurricular leadership experience due to his practice schedule. Is that going to hurt him even more? Either way, appreciate the advice. Our son is applying to all the academies.
Getting leadership on the team is a great option, best of luck to your son.
When should i start worrying about actually applying? Im going into 10th grade and had good grades and 2 sports my freshman year. I'm also taking an ap and honors classes. What im asking is who should i talk to to start getting ready to do it?
You will be opening up an application the summer between junior and senior year -- but you should plan on applying to summer seminar January of your junior year. Until then - keep up the good work building that scholar, athlete, leader profile! -Capt Dach
I cannot help but wonder if this is due to DEI initiatives. It is simply a question that has to be asked whether it is comfortable to discuss or not. Hopefully some data will come out that will answer this question.
You need to think of this in terms of class composition goals rather than DEI solely. This would include: Racial diversity Gender diversity Recruited athletes, giving each academy the ability to field Division 1 NCAA teams Candidates who score exceptionally on the fitness assessment Candidates with standout leadership skills (ie: Class president) Candidates with unique accomplishments Re-applicants and those with college experience (see our recent video on this)
Should the applicant take a letter from doctor regarding the status of a diagnosis to the DODMERB exam? In my son's case, dealing with ADHD from elementary school. Current doctor wrote a note that said he had not been medically treated in past 5+ years. Would that be useful to bring, or will that have to wait for the remedial or waiver process?
The physician will only make notes on their observations. I would look at the criteria to determine if your son meets them: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, if with: (1) A recommended or prescribed Individualized Education Program, 504 Plan, or work accommodations after the 14th birthday; (2) A history of comorbid mental disorders; (3) Prescribed medication in the previous 24 months; or (4) Documentation of adverse academic, occupational, or work performance. He should not be disqualified if there was no treatment in 5+ years and he had no accommodations.
Any idea where the cut off line would normally be as far as top 200 not to get a nomination based on your whole candidate score calculator?
Hi Martin. Usually around the 75 percentile or so.
How much emphasis is placed on physical fitness vs academic studies for prospective students in the scholarship selection process?
It depends if you are looking NROTC or Marine Corps Option, as they vary a lot! For NROTC, academics is 45% and PT is 5%.
Is PT a bigger part of it for the Marine option?
I have a question. I currently attend a hybrid high school that does not have sports or clubs, and surrounding high schools do not permit outside students to join their teams. I am interested in applying to the USAFA, but I am afraid I will not have the kinds of leadership or athleticism that the other competitors have, due to attending a smaller school with less opportunities. Do alternative leadership roles, such as serving as a volunteer teacher's assistant or organizing school events, hold the same value as positions like a team captain or student government? Additionally, does participation in less common sports, such as falconry or equestrianism, provide a strong chance of selection?
We recommend finding ways to get involved in traditional athletics (club sports). Team sports are best, where there are opportunities to lead. These should have strength and/or cardio development. If student government does not exist in your school, find other ways to lead your peers in areas you are passionate about. Join Sea Cadets or Civil Air Patrol. Find community service projects you can get involved with and eventually take on a leadership role in. Quality over quantity is the key here.
Don't forget that OCS is another option to get a commission.
Did you know that due to budget limitations, in 2024 the USAF is not funding tuition for 5th year students in CSAF approved STEM majors? No official word has been passed by HQ USAF, funding was just stopped without any explanation. Figured it would be important for anyone researching the ROTC program to know about this in advance. We were not informed and the funding was cut after the deadlines for any possible alternatives were available. Not a great way to retain high quality men and women in the Service.
This is extremely unfortunate. Thanks for the insight.
I know there are some lesser-known ways to become a Navy or Marine officer as well besides USNA and NROTC, like NUPOC and PLC. Maybe that is not within the scope of this channel but it would be great to know all the options.
We concentrate on the Academies and ROTC--hence the title of the pod. There are other routes as you mention. Thanks for bringing that up.
I talked to Air Force Academy admissions the other day, and they told me something similar to what you just said. They said they are not required to pick the principal nomination because it could have some biases tied to it. They said at the end of the day they pick who they want to pick. What we have learned is that you have to complete to compete and have your other options ready. Our strategy is to shoot for the Academy, then ROTC and if that doesn’t work, join the National Guard.
Of course it is biased. Under the principal nomination, members of congress can select their principal using any criteria they decide. If the Naval Academy is just going to ignore the principal, why even have that system? Just give the slate to the Naval Academy under the competitive process and let them decide. Basically, the Coast Guard Academy admissions process with a nomination element.
Totally agree with you. My point is that the Air Force Academy is doing the same thing. The admissions office told me this directly. I was given an example of a congressman molding someone from a young age and making them the principal nominee, even though they weren’t the highest qualified. Perhaps this person was a friend of the family or something like that.
@@ToddLemmonds Based on my recent experience with similar candidates, the Air Force Academy (as well as West Point) will do everything they can to honor the principal nominee from the member of Congress.

Can you get in if you don’t have a good gpa
It depends what you define as the limit for a good gpa. If the academy feels you are not academically prepared but otherwise fit the athlete and leader criteria, there is a chance you will be offered a foundation or prep school slot.
Does the SAT/ACT score still deter whether you can apply or not if you have 13 college credit hours? I saw a 4 year old video saying the SAT scores wouldn’t matter if you did have those credit hours.
SAT ACT scores will likely be considered still
What would an aviation major be on the scale? Thank you
Aviation is a non-technical major. Air Force ROTC does not classify non-technical majors in terms of criticality other than Russian and Mandarin.
Sir.. extremely good information.. Thank you so much
Good luck in your application and beyond
