How Far Does Each Club Go For A Mid-Handicap (14) Golfer?
How far does each club go for a mid-handicap golfer? I’m currently a 14 handicap, and these are my carry distances with each club, as measured using a Mevo+ launch monitor.
The numbers are averages taken from 5-10 shots with each club.
Also, in this video I run through my ‘What’s In The Bag?’, as some people have been asking. Let me know what you think!

    Very nice swing for a 14hcp. I'm also a 14 but my swing looks terrible compared to yours. Distance wise we are about the same.

    I also bounce between 12-14 with similar yardages. I ditched my 4 and 5i for more forgiving 6i (srixon zx4) and a 5H set to 23*. So I have 2 6i but one is 28* and the other is 25*. But ya when I tested my 4-6i over a dozen shots each they basically all went 175 avg. 😅

      Yeah it's really tricky to know how much is club and how much is just inconsistent ball striking as a mid-handicap player.

  • @Dylan-y6n

    I have a similar goal. I’ve played for 7 months now and I shoot low 80s to 90 at my home course. Coming from a background of cricket has helped me I think. Never had a lesson and don’t plan to. I’d say that one thing I’ve stopped doing, is recording my swing and trying to have a perfect looking swing. I solely focus on executing the shot and where the ball is going. Look on the PGA and DP tours, there are so many unconventional swings. Swing your swing and don’t think about how it looks, think only about the result. If you are going to shoot low, you need distance off the tee and a good short game.

    Good video, very interesting. Pay attention to how those numbers stack up out on the course - the weather, lie, wind etc play such a factor so it will help you improve if you don’t assign a specific yardage to always being a specific club. Plus anytime you aren’t sure pay attention to the distance to the back of the green and be inclined to club up when you know there is room.

    • @GolfLifeCrisis
      @GolfLifeCrisis 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely. Wind totally eats my ball at the moment, and I definitely subscribe to the clubbing up/back of the green approach 👍

    As other have mentioned, your gapping from 8i up is too tight. You should ideally have a 10 - 12 yard gap between each wedge/iron. It could just be down to taking a single swing with each and not getting great contact with your longer irons.

    • @GolfLifeCrisis

    Great video , well done. Excellent number , The only club I would be concerned about is the 8 iron , I personally would have that looked at if these are your standard carry yardages, The gapping between the 9 to 8 is a little large and looks like the 8 iron may need to be bent a couple of degrees weaker to fall around the 152-153 range. Other than that you have great gapping on all your clubs and you hit them well.

    Would have been nice for this fellow 14 handicapper if you'd listed clubhead speed and (average) smash factor too. I can some flashing by indicating you swing it about 5-7 mph harder than me on the longer sticks. Since the 101's compare pretty well to my i525's on loft, I may be able to compare

    Pulling the ball left in a sim isn't that unusual if you're not used to hitting inside. I think it has to do with less body rotation as people can slightly change their swing without knowing it due to hitting at the screen rather than through the ball. I've had plus handicap golfers and a tour pro in my place do exactly the same thing. Once you get used to the sim it's not an issue though. Re driver spin it doesn't look too bad on the shot you showed for that sort of swing speed, but was obviously much higher on the previous shot which was still showing on the screen before you swung. What sort spin do you get as an average?

    • @GolfLifeCrisis
      @GolfLifeCrisis 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I need to gather more data, really - it's an anecdotal feeling currently more than anything, just based on ball flight (and also how much distance I tend to lose in the wind).

    After 18 months I'd say the most important thing is weight shift and sticking to a particular swing style stack&tilt/classic/single-plane (until comfortable i.e. following a particular coach). Think weight shift has to be number one with knowing its a 3 phase movement backswing, loading front foot then pushing down and back, then swinging around the front foot. [Guess my swing style?] For this reason I suggest you try a pressure board as a training aid for higher power and more efficient effortless swing 💪🏽

    • @MannyCureUK
      @MannyCureUK 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Spent good time treating it as a back and forth 2 phase movement where I've not been loading the shaft/using the correct tempo so it's been a break through for me 💪🏽

    • @GolfLifeCrisis
      @GolfLifeCrisis 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah that's a good shout - my current issue is that when shifting weight into my back foot there's way too much sway as opposed to rotation. Reducing/eliminating sway is my #1 focus right now.

    Carry distance is not constant, I think that is a problem with Sims. It varies fairly significantly depending on temperature, humidity, wet or dry ball and how warm you are and how many layers you are wearing. On a warm, dry summer afternoon I'll hit my 7 iron 175 yards, yesterday morning (cold and damp) I took my 7 iron into a 148 yard rising par 3 and finished pin high. I think data can take you so far, but nothing beats experience on the course.

Subjective but I would highly recommend Jon Shermans book or audible called The Four Foundations of Golf. This if you don't know will look at the mental side of the game, expectations and logic around how we all play golf. It's unreal. Will be following. I'm currently at 14.1 and am looking at single figures. Although the handicap for me isn't the be all and end all. It's more an end goal of being able to enter some decent golf comps and not worry about being last, similar age to you and I know I'll never set the world alight, but being able to play some better that good golf and compete.. that's my golden ticket! Will be interested to see some Vlogs when you get the weather for it. Good that you enjoyed Ganton. Think I may have mentioned it in a previous comment but if you wanted to play somewhere similar but much closer to you The Hotchkin at my home club Woodhall Spa has a very similar feel and as a guest it'd only set you back £45. As I say, like Ganton The Hotchkin is a Heathland course but it's sort of Ganton on steroids. There's more Heather, more bunkers, they are deeper and some of the greens have interesting drop offs if you get it slightly wrong. Where the slope at Ganton is in the 130s, on The Hotchkin it's in the 150s. Aside from the course I'm about 8 years ahead of you on a broadly similar challenge and have had quite a bit of contact with guys playing at the level you aspire to including a guy currently on The Legends Tour. You may find some of the stuff I've learned along the way interesting. The Hotchkin: th-cam.com/video/bJzgUGCtTXo/w-d-xo.html

      Yeah I was up there last year for a short game school - absolutely great facility. Definitely keen to give both courses a try... maybe when my game is in a slightly better place, given how hard the Hotchkin looks!

      @@GolfLifeCrisis Just give me a shout on here when/if you fancy it. Guest rate on the Bracken is £35 and Hotchkin is £45 so big discount from the full wack and they are utterly different courses, couldn't be more different in terms of look and feel. Hotchkin is a heathland course, Bracken a fairly open parkland course. Who was your short game school with btw? I've had short game sessions with both Scott Emery and Alison Johns on the area you will have used and have known both since long before I was a member at Woodhall. That area is also where we can now go and practice as members. If you remember the layout we can use the 3 greens with surrounding bunkers at the near end of the area, the 5 greens the other side of the central 'teeing area' are still for coaching only.

      It was with Alison Johns. Loved that facility - wish we had something that good!

      @ Have known Alison a long time. She coached both my parents at a different club (was called Rutland County, now Woolfox) maybe 15 years ago. She also runs short game sessions for members on that area a few times a month so have been to several of those. Have to admit we are a bit spoiled as members at Woodhall with the England golf setup there we have everything from golf specific strength and conditioning, sports massage and physio to the indoor ‘Green Stage’ putting room, Toptracer and grass ranges, short game area we can now use and a couple of very different but good courses. Really have no excuses not to practice.

    Good afternoon, First of all I love your introduction and how you manage your words with sincerity about your new goal. I think you’re one person that is not necessarily after fame but a realistic and communicative channel kudos to yourself. On a personal note, I’m currently 58 and just got into golf by accident by getting my mum‘s clubs who’s now passed, and wanted to go and have a hit of golf with her holding her clubs hitting the ball putting and hearing her talk about her day or how well she hit that ball? It brought me a little closer. What it did to me was gave me the same obsession as yourself. Without knowing you or seeing your video too have decided to try out for the seniors PGA down here in Australia. I haven’t given myself 10 years only 2 so I’m working hard and playing each day like you giving it a crack very much in Australian term Good luck looking forward to seeing your videos and how you going?

      You should definitely check out the Missing Links Golf Show podcast - it’s two guys looking to do basically the same thing as you, and very entertaining.

    I use arcoss. I logged roughly 40rds into arcoss last year. I played a total of 48 rounds. sitting at an 11.4 handicap. 2025 goals - break 80, single digit handicap, 110mph club head speed, play 60rounds.

      Nice - those are great goals. Tracking and improving my clubhead speed is something I definitely need to tackle at some point this year.

    I can't tell you which clubs to carry in your conditions, but my advice as a 12 handicap player, I would drop the 4 iron and get more wedges. Keep up the good work, and you will succeed.

    Wish you luck. I have been at a 13 for years and have done much of what you are trying. Braking though the 80's is difficult.

      Thank you - you too! Been agonisingly close to breaking 80 a few times now, so 🤞 it’s not far off.

    Interesting channel - had a chuckle when you talked about being very old when taking up the game. I started playing in late 2023 and joined a golf club as I turned 52 and was recovering from a mountain bike crash that put me in hospital for a while with broken ribs and various other injuries. It was one of the only sports I could actually do at the time with the physical restraints I had. The golf bug then got me and I got a handicap of 24 in February. Set myself a goal to get to 15 by end of year and as of today am actually down to 14. Goal for 2025 is to get as low into single digit handicap as I can. I have just bought a shot scope v5 to help and plan on taking some lessons early this year too, particularly to improve my iron play. I guess we will see if an even older bloke than you can go from beginner to single digit handicap in 18 months too.

      Funny how the habit starts eh… mine was recovery too… I ruptured my Achilles at 40 and needed an excuse to walk more. My physio thought being an ex baseballer it’d help take my mind off the leg and golf would be a good distraction from getting some steps, strength and stability on uneven ground. He wasn’t wrong, addicted since then 👍🏻 certainly a sport for life ❤

      @@pottsyweb - yep, it’s definitely my sport for life now. Ironically the mountain biking only started 3 years ago for me to allow me to pre-hab and then help re-hab a hip replacement that I had 2 years ago when I was 50. Basically have worn my hips out from playing squash and other sports. At the time golf was one of the highly recommended sports in the recovery process - I should have taken it up straight away. I was never a fan or tempted to play over the years, who knew it could be so addictive!
