I don't like these modern "realistic" interpretations. They turned the nymphs into three harlots on a dirty dam. The Ring should be about fantasy and marvel.

Silly production, pointless and poorly designed. Like a bad Disneyland cartoon. Eurotrash strikes again. Traditional productions are only boring if Directors can't meet the material fairly. So bad producers and directors come up with this "updated" rubbish to disguise their ignorance. Not working. I don't want my Lohengrin looking like a gas jockey.

I had the privilege of seing Heinz Sednick, Gwyneth Jones and Donald McIntyre in the Ring in Bayreuth in 1974 and 1975, the last staging from Wolfgang Wagner before the "scandalous" new staging of Chereau. Heinz Sednick has to be the best Mime I ever saw.

Visually striking, but....... I´ve no problem with abstract staging using random design elements. The problem is when those elements are too specific, and look as if they are supposed to represent something. The bridal chamber scene was stunning because of its colour contrast; but the effect was rather undermined by being an electricity sub-station, built by somebody who didn´t know much about electricity, but liked the aesthetic of the equipment. Did this visual motif reflect anything in the plot? I am afraid it was distracting and unintentionally funny. Likewise, the insect wings were intriguing, but they felt like a good creative costume idea in search of a home, and I´m not sure this was it. But there were many terrific things, not least the principals, so thank you uploading!

Irgendwie ist es eine sehr seltsame Inszenierung, und ich frage mich dann immer, warum kann man sich nicht einfach an die Regieanweisung von Herrn Wagner halten? David und Walther sollten die Rollen tauschen, Walther klingt als wäre er im Stimmbruch, und David könnte mit dem Dampf den er in seiner Stimme hat, auch locker einen Siegfried, oder Sigmund singen. Für mich ist das ganze hier eher eine Parodie, als eine ernsthafte Opern Aufführung.

Mir gefällt die Inszenierung, weil Wagner auf eine fast kindliche, heitere und humorvolle Weise musikalisch neu erlebt werden kann. Sehr gut. Wagner is "deconstructed" and "rebuilt" in a much more playful and lively experience. Thank you

Was für ein Schwachsinn. Gut, dass ich Bayreuth noch im letzten Jahrhundert erlebt habe.

Wagner and verdi both use leitmotiv to introduce characters but Wagner develops them more, sometimes combines them. They are both tunesmiths, the sangspiel style of Wagner replaces dialogue which is used in German opera. German like English is a declamatory language and getting the words across is up most importance. Britten achieves this as well. Whereas, Italian lends itself more to bel canto vocal melodies and expressive recitative.

I don't think verdi or Wagner ever met, but verdi did attend a performance of Lohengrin, which he made notes on. He said he thought apart from the length of the opera, there were too many held notes. He must of been impressed by the prelude as his La Traviata preludes had the same string idea writing. Verdi travelled far more than Wagner. Wagner was like Bach remaining in his locality. Verdi travelled to France Spain England, performed his Requiem in the Albert hall a year after it was opened, he even travelled to Moscow to perform his la Forza del Destino opera, that is why the overture has a distinct Russian flavour, hinting at Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky was also influenced by Italian opera during his visits to Italian.

I think there's too much of this antisemitic rhetoric concerning Wagner s music. I was offended to see an effigy of a Jewish man in the riot scene. All this political overtones were made during the world war Two with the two exact comtempories opera composers of the 19th century. Is Wagner supposed to represent Hitler and Verdi Mussolini!? They both genius even though their operas went in different directions. I fully appreciate their music. There's no hint of anticematici ism in his operas. Most of them are fairy tales. Verdi gets closer to political realism of his day, especially in Simon Bocanegra and Don Carlos. Verdi himself became a politician. Wagner was probably committing adultery in his spare time with his best friends wife Clara. Schumann which probably inspired him to write Tristan and Isolde. Apparently he wrote his own libretti which means he was probably a very isolated person not corresponding with anyone outside his home base.

Yep! My favourite production. Thanks so much for posting the cleaned up/HD version. Just wonderful. Although Ring Cycle fans should check out the Mehta/Valencia production. If you can ignore the terrible costumes, that's now my second favourite.

I am in no way denigrating Holady for all his fine work. I finally decided to download just Act II of the 1955 Keilberth Ring. For all the posters with their glowing comments of the singers in the Boulez/Chereau Ring I hope they listen to this and honestly compare the sound of the voices (even on YT).
