As promised, I'm here with today's video! It's Sunday, and I've created a watercolor painting of a lady. Stay tuned until the end to see the final artwork!
Step-by-Step Process:
Outline Sketch:
I started with a light outline of the lady. Remember, in watercolor painting, always keep the sketch as light as possible. Dark lines can remain visible through the paint layers.
Base Layer - Wet-on-Wet Technique:
I mixed Gamboge Hue, Yellow Ochre, and a touch of White to create a soft base color. After diluting the mix with water, I used a 1-inch flat brush to apply it evenly across the face, avoiding the lips and eyes.
Adding Depth:
Once the base layer dried, I added Burnt Sienna to the previous mix, making it slightly darker. This color was applied to the hair.
Eyes:
I used Cobalt Blue diluted with water to paint the eyes lightly.
To darken the eyeliner, I mixed Black with Cobalt Blue for a more natural tone.
The eyebrows were painted with a similar black-blue mix.
(Tip: Avoid using pure black in portraits-it looks unnatural. Instead, mix black with other colors for a realistic effect.)
Shading and Highlights:
I added the previous color mix above and between the eyes and eyebrows, keeping the lighting direction in mind. In this painting, light comes from the right, so the left side of the face is slightly darker.
The neck was shaded with Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre to enhance depth.
Lips:
Crimson Red mixed with a bit of White was used for the lips. Only the shadowed areas were painted, leaving some parts untouched to represent light reflection.
Hair Details:
I refined the hair using Burnt Sienna mixed with a hint of Black for added depth and texture.
Final Touches:
For areas where the paint appeared too intense due to reflected light, I used a clean, slightly wet brush to lift the color. Gently pressing a cotton wool pad over these areas helped achieve the desired effect.
Conclusion:
This freestyle watercolor painting intentionally leaves some areas less defined, giving it a natural, unfinished charm.
