Land Line Now has full coverage of this week’s task force meeting. Then, Bryan Martin of Chrome Shop Mafia shares advice that could be helpful for any trucker who feels the tug of sentimentality when deciding to trade in one set of keys for another. We also have a preview of this month's edition of Land Line Magazine. And finally, we mull over untraditional career paths for truckers.

Washington state climate law may spell trouble for truckers
มุมมอง 224 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
When emission regulations are mentioned, most people immediately think of the Environmental Protection Agency or the California Air Resources Board. But in fact, other states and government entities have also put rules in place regarding emission - including Washington. Early last year, that state enacted its Climate Commitment Act. And what it requires is pretty extreme, at least from truckers...

มุมมอง 4114 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Avalanches are something that can happen in mountainous areas during winter that can be a very unfortunate surprise. But what if you could control when they happen and get the roads cleared? Cost of insurance going up? Here are some reasons why
All the driver shortage claims were a way for the mega carriers to flood the market with inexperienced drivers that will work for rates that an experienced driver would laugh at. Hourly pay for a long haul trucker? I don't see that happening. Kinda hard to bid contracts on, " it will take this many hours to deliver this load". The miles are easily figured, where time isn't. The other side of hourly pay is that a trip that should take 10 hours, some people would stretch into 14 simply to make more money even though conditions didn't justify the extra time. A shipper shouldn't have to pay a driver to set in a truckstop sucking coffee.
I wear several hats so I can see multiple sides of the driver pay arrangement argument. I'm not the direct employer but I fill the role of equipment maintainer, trainer, safety oversight, micro fleet manager, etc. None of my people work OTR, they are all home daily. In our operation we must use ELD's (barring equipment failure) and so hourly pay would likely increase safety but it would also impact productivity unless a split pay scheme of some kind could be implemented. (which would possibly put a much greater work load on a small company owner). IE base hourly and then productivity incentive. Otherwise not all daily driving jobs are suitable for hourly pay because some of them must be incentivized for the driver to produce. I imagine that one possible viable solution if government is going to further interfere in the trucking business would be that hourly be used by medium to large companies only (size TBD) and that there be no minimum wage interference. That will allow negotiation between employer and employee on both the base pay and incentive pay if such a scheme is used. As long as parties can negotiate then it is not going to be catastrophically destructive to the industry. Both drivers and companies will have incentives that will enhance safety and productivity. As for the driver shortage it has never been true in my over thirty years of experience, it is simply a lie. If there is a shortage, it is a shortage of competence skills and or communication skills and that is probably true for all industries to various degrees.
The way drivers are treated is a crime. Everyone know it.
Truck drivers are true heroes every day out there. Long hours, low pay, crappy food, etc. our low pay keeps the economy making money.
Most people work 8 hrs/day. Maybe they work 9 or 10 hours with overtime. Truck drivers DRIVE up to 11 hours per day, we operate heavy equipment on public highways. Just this is CRAZY! Yet, we are expected to do this EVERY day!
Just talk to the drivers. They will tell you all you need to know. One thing drivers will tell you is that there is no driver shortage…but there is a shortage of drivers willing to drive for peanuts.
As iwner operator. Pay by mile does not incentives me to drive dangerously at all.
I agree with you. I'm a 30+ yr driver with multi million miles behind me. The only accident I was involved with was when I was rear-ended at a stop sign by a kid who was texting.
When they say "driver shortage". Thwy are talking about drivers for companies like swift pam western express etc. Not the gofher paying carriers nor owner operators nor small authorities.
go into a trade .. stay away from trucking .. way better pay and work life balance in a trade like Electrical HVAC the list goes on . pay is low . living in a truck is not a life for most people. no hate to the guys that love it stay in . they could have got the pay from indeed or glass door . they did not want to show it .
Been at this trucking game OTR for 27 yrs. Would never recommend it for quite some time now. I’ve gotten out of it what I’ve put in. The lifestyle sucks…and that’s on a good day. No amount of $$ can cover the BS drivers gotta deal with. God bless the men & women who are here, who’ve been here and will come.
Get rid of the 14-hour tour of duty! It’s so stupid!!
I agree, profit and loss is easier to separate when the driver is responsible for the loss and the company keeps the profit Also agree that hourly wages for company drivers will drive up line haul, rates for all of us
The brokers would have to leave and shippers would get frustrated
This is why brokers will not show their info
We don't want FEMA running anything. Period.
They’re paid percentage, Oilfield driving can be lucrative but only if you know what you’re doing. If you don’t you’re better sticking to OTR or getting out of trucking in general. Too many people want to cry to the courts and then we wonder why we’ve got so many regulations
what about fedex/ups drivers. local drivers are picking up goods growing worldwide
Great program today
That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of. What if the products end destination is china? It’s out of control.
Don’t be a chicken shit because ooida says so . Stand up for your rights. Everyone knows you are going to lose in the first court.
0 claims and went up 25%
Was a fan until they treated Mark Herndon like crap
This man needs to sit behind the desk and dispach on this market.. Where exactly on this cold market dont you have 50 trucks per freight.. Brokers give worse rates if you have a next day delivery option. They are counting on you catching another load tomorrow meaning they dont have to pay you as much. You have a ton of cheap freight carriers and they will book loads for posted rate and the broker knows it. You can look at your numbers all day long but its a lot different when your out there.
No hope
That law should go in effect for all tech schools
I’m originally from Delaware and witnessed a semi load of hay get torn apart back in the early 80s. There are definitely enough warning signs now. Certainly hope they don’t lower the road or raise the bridge. This is definitely a residential area and there are plenty of ways to get through town without passing under this bridge, so I’d like to see it remain as is. Excellent interview with Mr. Yoakum!!
General freight companies have 400 other carriers are competing against them for the same freight, why would they promote one more person, to become successful, get more trucks, because your own fleet owner and make you one more company become thier competition for freight.
Have been trucking for 60 yrs rocket Lincoln shire trucker
Good way to develop a fleet by having a diesel mechanic
Everything sucks

Insurance on older drivers can be a problem even if they have clean records.
100% are violating something at some point

If I make it to Mr. Archer's age then I hope to have half his mental sharpness. What a guy!
Turn up interview mic or down the closing music Thanks for the interesting interview
The smart Lane system isn't all that new. Michigan has been using that system on US 23 for years. However, there is a catch in Michigan. Commercial motor vehicles are not allowed in a smart Lane
I’m gonna stay trucking as long as I can.
Thank you for all you truckers do
Mr archer started trucking at the same age as me 😁
Continuing to listen
I live in Philadelphia and the traffic is really horrible here. And compared to pre-pandemic levels, there are A LOT more drivers on the roads in and around the city and nearly ALL times of day except overnights. And there is even more drivers on secondary roads in the inner suburbs here than it ever was. You mentioned edge cities. The biggest examples around here on the Pennsylvania side of my metropolitan area is King of Prussia and Malvern because those two locations have a number of office parks. Many drivers do the reverse commute in the mornings from the city to the suburbs than in the past. Some of the outbound Schuylkill Expressway traffic is worse when many get on U.S. Route 422 to head northwest toward Pottstown for the same reason.
Keep it up
God bless you ❤
I got to carry a million per load and they keep 75k to handle 100s of loads a day🤯
Best information I’ve heard on alignments at minute 26. I’m a trained aircraft mechanic and knew all the words, but Never had it explained that well. Keep up the good work. Do more than subscribe . become a member of OOIDA.
