มุมมอง 49Kปีที่แล้ว
This time I'm playing with a watch that I'd actually really like to not destroy. Watch along as I repair the 6309A Calibre in this '82 Seiko 5, all for a very good and special cause. In all seriousness I'm really glad with how this turned out, and it's my favourite repair and video to date
Servicing a Manual Wind Rotary Wristwatch - From success, you learn absolutely nothing...

Watch along as I open and attempt to service my first ever wristwatch, learnt some pretty hard lessons here, but as Niki Lauda said, you never learn by being successful...
1965 Ingersoll pocket watch service - lessons were learned...
มุมมอง 18Kปีที่แล้ว
Watch this time as I strip, clean, reassemble and lubricate this lovely 60's Ingersoll pocket watch. Incredibly similar to my previous works, this watch was a welcome sight, but the employment of new tools and techniques came back to bite me... Watch along to learn from my mistakes

Thanks man! I plan to ☺️
I have a 60s/70s stainless steel cushioned, champaign dial 17j Westclox as one of my main daily wearers and it keeps perfect time....well. not PERFECT, but worth the 20 bucks. theyre a good mechanical starter watch as theyre 20-40 bucks all day on ebay. I LOVE their designs. their dials and indices are amazing
I have a Seiko 5 which has no crown wheel. The only means of control is a button in roughly the 10 position, but on the outer edge of the watch. Unfortunatlely, the power unit died some 5 or 6 years ago, which, unfortunately happened when the Seiko factory was flooded by a tsunami, so a power module was out of the question. It's serial number is 030198. In truth, I'm not sure if that might be the year of manufacture i.e. 3rd January 1998.
Hi, just watched this really good I have 2 of these one is smiths but identical needs new crystal i'm unsure of the size to get any advice please, Karl.
Hi Karl, There are a few sizing guide videos on TH-cam, but in my experience it's best to measure first then buy, You'll see that the crystals, being acrylic, are actually pretty cheap, so if you get the wrong size it isn't show stopping, can go for some trial and error then
@@LRWatchRepair Thanks for replying bought another yest just cos it had the outer case( i know mug, but they like morris minors take a lot to stop them)only £12.50 working so why not thanks again. Karl.
Hi I have one of these that I would like servicing is this something that you would do for me
49:00 says working with that face makes him nervous... touches the face without finger gloves 🙄
These watches aren't made to be disassembled like this. The idea with these is that it is serviceable by removing the basics (hands face, loose wheels, etc) but not the main bridge. It can be cleaned in alcohol, oiled LIGHTLY, then will run great! there are no jewels, so no need to disassemble.
I'll be sure to try this in the future as it could certainly save some effort, I'd be keen to see the efficacy of this
The westclox factory in Peru, Illinois, USA both of my grandmothers work there during World War II, building timer for bombs, etc. as they shifted to or 10 production
I is for Ingersoll. The watch we all use. We traded our Elgin's to buy us more booze.
Did you say into Stirling? Are you local there?
I did indeed, Based around Edinburgh so its not too far of a jaunt!
@LRWatchRepair ah, great. I'm stirling area, but work in Edinburgh when not WFH. Just bought an old Rotary and watching a lot of these vids just now. I'll give you a subscribe
@GPZ_Biker good man, thanks for that! Like the old rotary pieces, got a few myself, nought up with them at all!
@@LRWatchRepairyeah, It's one from the 50's, pretty little thing. It works, but is awful on time keeping. It needs a new strap though as it's for someone a lot more delicate than me. I may look into getting some tools etc, but I don't think my eyes are up to it any more
That's fair enough bud, what I will say is you may surprise yourself!
So you watch repairs. I have a san martin with a pt5000 and it’s broken. Looking for a service or movement replacement.
Hi there bud, sorry to hear that! I'm firmly in the hobbyist category at the moment and need to get back into it following a hiatus, I'd recommend any have a go themselves! If its of particular value, sentimental or otherwise I'd recommend taking it to a local, reputable watch repair firm. Thanks!
@@LRWatchRepair thanks I don’t have the kit but I will try local but so far they are saying no thanks
Found this and thought " great ill have a go at mine " but i find it is made in great Britain and the seconds hand is in the centre 😮
A brilliant video ! I purchased an ingersol at the local car boot £3, runs well but loses 1 minute per hour. I have tried the F S adjustment. Any suggestions please ? Great video really helpful. Thank you for showing it . Kind regards.
So it could just be a case of needing a service bud, If its still slow after you mate have a more significant issue on your hands, you could be needing to adjust the main spring. It's always best to do the easiest thing first, id get it serviced 👍🤞
Brilliant video ! My £3 Ingersol pocket watch buy at a car boot runs well but loses 1 minute per hour, no improvement when adjusting the hair spring F S . This video has given me the inspiration to clean it . Great video and commentary. Thank you very much
That's so kind of you.to say and great to hear! I really recommend you do you have nothing to loose! You're of course most welcome
how long have you been repairing watches for?
No time at all really! Just picked it up and had a go
Do you know the lift angle on this?
I'm afraid that I don't my mate
Is it worth taking to a watch expert to get mine working again? Got it for 4 quid. The time changes and it clicks when winding but doesn’t work. It’s in great condition on the outside tho
I think that's totally your decision, financially I dare say it wouldn't make sense, as the money you put it won't ever be gotten back - not all of it anyway, but it certainly isn't my place to say. If that's what you'd like to do the then crack on and wear it with pride! If not, for the sake money you could get some tools and have a crack at the hobby yourself? Best of luck!
@@LRWatchRepair thanks for the advice! Oh by the way, how much is it to get one of those coiled spring things replaced in a watch? My one is completely broken in another pocket watch I have
Very attractive and fascinating watch. With the green, sharp hour markers. Good work - but should sand and polish up the case. It's missing .. And restore, polish and use the bracelet. Its that det watch is best looking whit.
Thank you very much, I've learnt a lot about my old Smiths car boot bargain! I thought it was overwound, now I'm going to dismantle and clean it following your video!
No problem. Give it a go, if it already isn't working, it can't get any worse...
Dang, it's a shame you have so few views on this video, it's well done, you have a good speaking voice, and you explain things clearly and with interest. Good luck with your watches, getting into it myself!
That's very kind of you to say. Thanks man!
These watches are actually more difficult than the more expensive ones with multiple Bridges, single plate movements are very tricky to get all the wheel pivots back in place. A pin lever Timex is actually more difficult to service or near impossible compared to say a Rolex from the 50s or 60s.
Noticed you were picking up the screws with a magnetized screwdriver. That's really bad. You want no part of the watch magnetized at all. You should buy a degauss machine online. They're about $10-$15. No need for a fancy one. Demagnetize your tools, and then do the same to the movement once you're done. You can uses apps on your phone to check for a magnetized movement. I've found that almost all of these dollar watch movements are heavily magnetized, including the cases. Demagnetizing them makes them run infinitely better, and fixes many issues.
Thanks man! I actually have a Degausser, but unfortunately I'm questioning the quality of it... I reckon a new one may be in order...
@@LRWatchRepair What the heck, YT keeps removing my comments
@@LRWatchRepair Just test it with your phone! It's easy to do. Open the app, set the watch on it. Then spin it slowly. You might get a negative reading, this is the magnets repelling each other. Spin the watch slowly, & you'll see it spike. That means you need to demagnetize it. The cheap blue one from "a store named after a river" works fine. It's how you use it. Took me a second to figure out. Set the watch on the demagnetizer directly. Turn it on, & while holding the button, slowly lift the watch straight up until your arm is fully extended. Turn the watch around 180 degrees, & repeat. That should do it!
@@LRWatchRepair Some stubborn watches may take 2-4 cycles. Just check with your phone app. The app is for a non-apple cellular device. It's called "Magnetometer"
@@LRWatchRepair The app is for Android, & is called "Magnetometer"
I have my grandfather’s Ingersoll Trump watch from the 1930’s that didn’t work, would not wind. I decided to take it apart, then after launching the spring across the room, found this video. I am at the 18:00 minute mark in reassembly, but the gear train is slightly different. The gears are capped, not open at the top, not allowing the top gear to be simply dropped into place. Any suggestions?
I'm afraid without looking myself I may not be of much use, my advice is to take plenty photos as you go to jog your memory potentially in the future. This being said, there are reference assembly manuals online for lots of movements, I can happily have a look at photos if you can share?
I reassembled my Ingersoll Trump watch, everything looked to be in their correct mounts. The balance spring, however, doesn't look like it is correctly coiled. The stem now seems to wind now, where previously it didn't move. The watch still doesn't work, so I suspect the balance spring has something to do with that. Is there an email address I can use to send a pic of the balance spring should I decide to disassemble it again?@@LRWatchRepair
@garykerkstra1067 I agree with you from the description here. Those hairsprings are fantastically sensitive so if it isn't sitting right it's a non starter. That being said, there are replacements out there! Channel email is in the homepage: Lewisranshaw918@gmail.com Cheers
This is brilliant, I bought this exact watch for a quid at a car boot sale. Someone has obviously used it for years, the chrome has warn away on the sides where someone has held it. It doesn’t run so I feel obligated to try and get it going. You have made it look easy but Im under no illusion it’s going to be.
My friend, I assure you that if I've been able to figure it out, then anyone can!
I'm in exactly the same position with my car boot bargain!
@@SimonForrester-cf1iu I got mine running after a few eBay purchases that cost a lot more than a quid haha good luck
Brilliant video ! My £3 Ingersol pocket watch buy at a car boot runs well but loses 1 minute per hour, no improvement when adjusting the hair spring F S . This video has given me the inspiration to clean it . Great video and commentary. Thank you very much
Hi there. im working on the same movement as my first watch repair project. Unfortunately the balance wheel seems to be flopping down and not rotating as smoothly as shown in the video. Any tips on why this may be? Thanks.
Надо было ещё больше смазки в барабан натолкать 😂
Solid restoration. Decent timepiece.
Did I miss it? Which movement is this? Did Ingersoll produce their own movements? Is it Ronda?
wow
what is the small wheel called ? is it the fourth ?i need to buy only one wheel and thats that small wheel that right near the pallet fork
The last wheel in the train is the 4th wheel. Finding parts for these is difficult. You may just have to buy a donor watch in worse shape than your own. The first wheel is the one with the spring, and then everything is consecutive from there down to the escapement and pallet fork.
@@k-ozdragon thanks bro
The day and date rings won't align on the left because 31 is odd and 14 is even 😉
You’re doing a great job
You're very kind! Thanks
Please dont make out that you are a novice learner watch repairer........I have watched all of your vids and you are a capable skillfull guy......Thanks for your uploads and good luck !
That's very kind of you, but I assure you I am but a mere hobbyist! An entry level guy just having a go
I have just stripped a Seiko 6309 for my first time ever thanks to this video. It was scary but not as bad as I thought. It is so much smaller than it seems in videos. Putting it back together will be the test. It's been a good learning curve though. Thanks for your video 👍.
That's no issue bud. Far as I can see there's nought to loose and potentially a lot to gain!
first time i see someone hand winding the main spring... i loved it
You gotta do what you gotta do!
Never ever oil the pallet fork jewels
I followed your instructions. It went a no runner. Then i greased the cogs and the surfaces, it made wonders
Thankyou, though they aren't really instructions, more of a video just to be watched! Thanks mate
Canon pinion remover.....works wonders! 😉
Men and children sitting barefoot on the ground make these “Seiko” watches mainly from parts taken out of many other old Seiko watches and they use face plates that are made in India that they think looks groovy but for the most part Indian face plates are very colorful and not that very pleaseing to look at by pretty much the rest of the world.
Mumbai Special no chance at all that face is from the factory. It’s a good bet that back plate is from a different watch, who knows what the history is of the individual parts. The Indian watch makers do not know how to service the movement, they merely take movements that seem to work’ish and use them in their builds.
And now I want a vintage Scottish watch.....
At 38:51 - as you fold the dial retaining into place - a small piece of metal falls into the watch from the lower leg of the tweezer. I have one of these that I bought as a teenager in 1970 or ’71. To my surprise it’s still running but it could probably use a service!
That was good spotting I was looking at the copper spring washer put on wrong way round just before that point but a must say he does a wonderful job of explaining top job
Can you not hear your phone vibrating 25 times throughout the video? One of the worst videos I've seen
Maybe post your own videos before slagging off someone else's @sshole
Very nicely done. Thanks for doing a video about an old Smiths. Thank you!
I am in need of this watch seiko 5 1982, black & green,is any body have to sell.....
Your wrist watch is not working.
My dad had this watch! Nostalgia
