Stella Splendens and Ad Mortem Festinamus at First Church Joplin, MO
I had the opportunity to play at the church I grew up in a couple of Sundays ago. I played two songs from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat: "Stella Splendes" and "Ad Mortem Festinamus." This is performed on my Songbird Warbler hammered dulcimer.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence on gusli

The original lyrics to "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" go back possibly as far back as 3rd century Greek liturgy. The tune is the French Picardy Carol that dates to at least the 17th century. The melody and English translated lyrics were first combined in the 20th century by English composer Ralph Vaughn Williams. I'm playing on my Belarusian gusli made by Ales Chumakou. "Quem Pastores Laudavere" is from the Hoenfurth Manuscript dated to 1410 and found in a German abbey by the same name. The language is Latin. I wanted to add more information that you could use in your program. Andrew Lawrence -King says that psaltries are associated with King David, the composer of the Biblical Psalms. Second, Bibs Ekkel, the English authority on the Balalaika, recounts that records show that troubadours in old Russia were flogged and banished to the countryside for playing music for dancing. The Church frowned upon anyone having fun, especially at a drunken dance party. The only to play the happy upbeat songs was to give them very sober lyrics! This, the “happy death “ songs were preserved. Third, I have seen other artists pluck the hammered dulcimer. It gives another way to perform on that instrument. I am learning to play my treble hammered dulcimer and 15 string psaltrey. I was turned on to the paltry by your video on how to learn it by the piano. Thanks

      This little psaltery is very quiet, so I would not play it for a larger venue without amplification. I have a larger hognosed psaltery you can see in some videos (the one with curved sides) that I perform with. It is tuned an octave lower than this instrument and is a louder although it is still pretty quiet. It works best for small indoor venues or with amplification.

      Thanks! It's a simplified arrangement since my little 15 string psaltery is much more limited than Joshua Messick's huge dulcimer. Josh is an old friend of mine, and I kind of recorded this as a joke since this psaltery is so tiny in comparison. But it is such a lovely song. • @elusiveeskimo3013
    @elusiveeskimo3013 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you get one of these with it's song sheets that slide under the strings, you will be able to play the single line melody of the songs by following the Connect-The-Dots system they use. But you have to keep tuned to the key of G for the songs to sound right. Changing between the Keys of C and G only requires changing the tuning of 2 strings. Tune the F strings up to F sharp for the key of G. And all it's song sheets will work just fine. Tune these 2 strings back down to F for the Key of C. Which on these instruments is a very versatile Key to use. Especially if you take the time to learn how to read regular sheet music, or to play by ear. Invest this time and you will truly unlock the musical potential.of this sweet sounding instrument Also the short flat-metal tuning wrench that comes with this instrument is very hard to use. Make your life easier by getting a wrench sized for an Autoharp or Bowed Psaltery. It will fit better on the tuning pegs and the longer handle length will make it easier to fine tune each string's pitch. Personally I have two of these instruments. Keep one tuned to the Key of G, which I pull out with it's song sheets when I'm with people who claim they can't play any musical instruments, have no musical talent. Once they start to pluck the melody, I grab a flute or guitar, add some harmony or fingerstyle chord pattern accompaniment. Watch their face light up as they experience making music together. My other one is tuned to the Key of C, with the C and F strings color coded as this video describes, I use it for more creative and challenging musical moments, where I want to play more then just a single melody line on it..

      I use 0.016" strings for the entire instrument. I tune mine G to G (two octaves higher) just up the diatonic scale. I tune mine in the key of C (no sharps or flats), but you could easily sharpen or flatten certain strings for different keys. Not all psalteries are the same size, so I can't say what will exactly work for yours. My instrument is typical of a lot of small toy psalteries, so it may work for you. Let me know if you have other questions!
