เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 พ.ย. 2019
Certified permaculturist through Cornell. Axe & Root Homestead®️ is a six-acre plant-based permaculture farm based in central New Jersey.
Our goal is to grow as much of our own food as possible while mimicking patterns in nature. We strive to give more back to the land than what we're taking. We use ducks and geese, guineas, honeybee hives, draft horses, and sheep in our permaculture ecosystem.

Who here has accidentally left their hose running? Even though I'm super conscientious about water saving, I'm afraid I've left my hose running too long when filling a water trough, or when watering the garden before. It happens. But there's actually an app for your phone plus a water timer that work together to keep you from overfilling your stock tank or from drowning your plants. I'm sharing how easy it is to install the RainPoint 1-Zone Water Timer and get it up and running on your phone. @rainpoint #smartwateringsystem #bluetooth #morethanwatersaving

BREAK the Fruit/Apple Tree PEST CYCLE! Graze fallen fruit from your apple and pear trees.
มุมมอง 439วันที่ผ่านมา
There are three main reasons to pick up fallen fruit: 1. To break pest life cycles; 2. To reduce soil-retained diseases; 3. To deter an influx of wasps and stinging insects. Rather than pick up fallen fruit by hand, animals can be used to graze fallen fruit. This food-source is a means of nutrition for the animal, reduces work for the farmer, and allows the soil to gain fertilizer from dropping...
PROTECT YOUR ELDERBERRIES: Everything You Need to Know About Bagging Berries from Birds
มุมมอง 81614 วันที่ผ่านมา
Growing elderberries tends to be fairly easy and many folks experience little pest pressure and disease to the actual plant. However, the berries themselves can be difficult to harvest before other critters get to them first. Right after flowering birds are already snatching the tiny, undeveloped berries long before they even have a chance to ripen. I have used a net to "protect" my elderberry ...
Prune Tomatoes Like a Pro! Tips for Healthy Tomato Plants
มุมมอง 495หลายเดือนก่อน
As a permaculture homesteader and grower, I'm largely hands off when it comes to planting. I'm not really interested in micromanaging nor manicuring my growing spaces. There are a couple of exceptions when it comes to pruning for the health of the plant/harvest though; fruiting trees, shrubs and tomato plants fall into that category. I think pruning can truly be as complicated or as simple as t...
BUILD a PERMACULTURE homestead ECOSYSTEM with animals that CONTRIBUTE to the farm and to each other

This video does not cover how these critters compliment wildlife already existing here. Easy PERFECT CHERRIES Organically // No Herbicides, No Pesticides, No Nets
มุมมอง 318หลายเดือนก่อน
🍒 My cherry tree in this video is about 4-5 years old. And though it’s a dwarf, it’s producing a massive amount of fresh fruit. Rather than lose my harvest to the birds, deer, or insects, I’ve learned permaculture methods for keeping my cherries protected organically. No pesticides, nets, or chemicals-rather just a few management practices that make a world of difference. GUILDS In this specifi...
BLUEBERRY GUILDS: Permaculture approach to growing better blueberries
มุมมอง 345หลายเดือนก่อน
I have several blueberry patches throughout my farm. Guilds have been created in each patch to create a network or neighborhood of plant allies that work together to help one another thrive, and to support the blueberries. Some guild members repel pollinators, mulcher plants cover the soil, there’s weed suppressors, pollinator attractors, nutrient miners, and nitrogen fixers. I have different c...
Harvest AMAZING Strawberries: All Natural Organic Tips for Pest-Free better berries
มุมมอง 311หลายเดือนก่อน
I have 4 strawberry patches and they’re all pumping out tons of fruit this year. I am picking morning and evening and can’t keep up! Just a few simple things are helping me bring in healthy, beautiful berries: 1. A focus on soil health by refreshing spaces with compost each season 2. I keep birds out with nets, squirrels out with motion sprinklers. Toy snakes work too! Just move them every few ...
How I SAFELY WORK around LARGE HORSES on the Homestead
มุมมอง 423หลายเดือนก่อน
I have adopted a few techniques in my daily life in the stable. They’ve become habit for me, and while they may not be ground-breaking ideas, they have kept me safe and kick-free. I always remember these are prey animals. Chasing, quickly approaching, and using aggression doesn’t work. Instead I use their own horse behavior in my favor. 1. I move the heard leader if the horses are in my way whi...
Tour My Updated Permaculture Garden / No fence, less paths, more growing space

The stones are in, the plants are starting to take off, and I’m mulching with chopped straw. I started replacing my rotting wood raised beds with stones in March. A stone garden has been a dream of mine for ages so this year I finally decided to harvest stones from around the farm and make this a reality. I had to buy an additional 3 palettes from a local garden center to help complete the job....
WOOL PREP for the Fiber Mill // What happens to the raw fleece/fiber after shearing?
มุมมอง 2172 หลายเดือนก่อน
We are heading into the warmer months which means its time to shear the sheep! While wool is not my primary purpose for having sheep here at the permaculture homestead, the yarn is a perk. This is a quick video on how I package the raw fleece for the mill and a few notes of wisdom on how long raw fleece can be, and how to know if your sheep should be sheared more than once per season. I don’t miss a day a week kislux This show..
Hey I want the ability to sweat as body is designed. Don't want antiperspirant! Is there a formula where you can still sweat?
Your plants are thriving! Thank you for showing us our products!😍🌿
Very cool. It's amazing what's out there. Thanks so much for bringing it to our attention and showing us the easy install.
Thank you for watching!!!
Back in the day we called these dish rags 😂
You are so beautiful
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching 🖤
That’s exactly what’s been happening to our apple tree, and I couldn’t figure out why. I knew it may have been an internal issue, but I wasn’t sure what it was. I did plant a guild per your council on insta, now I have to figure out how to stop this from happening next year. Thanks for sharing!
I’m glad you found it helpful! It can be a frustrating cycle to break in the beginning for sure!! Thanks for watching
@AxeAndRootHomestead - Two quick questions: 1) What does this look like planted? How do you mow around it without potentially impacting your support plants? 2) Do you have any concerns about mint going invasive in the area?
Hi! Thanks for watching! You can see the guilds planted in several of my other orchard related videos. Each season, I mark a square-ish shape with a few t-posts and twine to indicate where my husband should and shouldn’t mow. As for the mint, this area is heavy clay so the mint doesn’t spread. I wouldn’t plant it in my annual vegetable garden, however, where the soil is soft and more nutrient dense. It would go crazy 😊
try satsuma or kumquat
God bless you!
Great advise. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Reply to my comment with a cat emoji that is gonna make my day😊
Apple cider vinegar attracts flies. Why the ACV?
Hi! In my experience it absolutely does not. In fact, I just accidentally dropped a Costco-sized bottle on my driveway the other day and it shattered. Haven’t seen a fly in days due to the lingering odor. 🤣
Can you propagate green wood elders? I planted one to close to my greenhouse door & had to trim it back. Appreciate any response 👵🏻👩🌾❣️ And I subbed ⭐️💫
Thank you for watching and subscribing! I haven’t tried on green shoots. My gut says as long as there’s nodes on the trunk for potential roots, it should work?
@@AxeAndRootHomestead yep, lots of nodes. Giving it a try. Thanks for responding 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
The birds to love them 😟. Where do you get you small bags as I truly need some for next year?? Have a great day 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Hi! I found mine on Amazon. I just searched mesh reusable produce bags and scouted some with a drawstring. Thanks for watching!
@@AxeAndRootHomestead Yes, I finally found them 😉 Ordering now as one tree/ bush has flowers. Thank you 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
gorgeous young lady
Apart from the Guinea fowl to reduce tick numbers, are you doing any drenching or chemical intervention ?
No, we don’t. 😊
I was thinking about doing this very thing. I see my berries disappearing
It can be so frustrating! The bags have been a game changer. :)
I’m here from reading this amazing book! So much practical advice for the exact lifestyle I am aiming for! I would recommend this book to everyone who does any sort of gardening\homesteading! ❤
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this!!! I sincerely appreciate your kind words!!!
Making the entry smaller, covered, and poked a small hole would be best. Otherwise, you are trapping beneficial insects as well. Butterflies and bees will be caught and drown too!😫😫🦋🦋💖💖
Not to worry! Bees and butterflies haven’t been attracted to the traps. 🖤
No fabric gravel makes me weed every spring like crazy. Buy thick fabric make it less .
And half teaspoon beeswax, will be harder.
Good tip! Thanks!
How much of each ?
Thank you I will try this!
Thanks for watching!!
Saving!!
Yay!! Thank you!
What is MTG???
Use plastic
Forgetting to mention this only works for indeterminate tomatoes. Understand which you use first. Indeterminate works with hilling, determinate only shoot at the level you plant them, hilling does nothing whatsoever except slow your harvest.
Totally agree with this!! ♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for watching!!! 😀

This is nonsense. You used the wrong type of membrane, fabric is crap, secondly you will get.more weeds as organic matter settle beneath and around 5he gravel and you get uncontrolled weed growth, eventually your gravel will be under and mixed with soil.
It’s been working great for us! Use what works for you.
I agree with what you said about landscaping fabric. I made the same discovery in my mulch bed. Last year, I shoved aside all the mulch (it was tedious) and laid down cardboard which I salvaged from my Amazon and grocery deliveries. Actually I did not pull up all the landscaping fabric, because I had used numerous staples to hold it down. But I did pull up quite a bit. I just laid the cardboard on top of it, (carefull to overlap the cardboard pieces). The cardboard did smother a lot of weeds.I was weed free!! In fact it prevented almost 100% of the weeds from growing back. I have a few problems with grass in my mulch and rock bed still, because my landscapers blow cut grass into those areas. But the cardboard does work fine otherwise. Now I have to do something with my lawncutting service...lol.
Beautiful tree. Where I'm from we call it planting trees. Thought that was funny. I read and have that book but I haven't used the sprays so I will try them next year.
Can we add a few drops of one's fav cologne in this ? Will it work ?
cool
Explain the logic slightly better please
It’s pretty clear. You can research on it for details.
Everything I’ve read says wait till 6-8 inches before billing the first time
Just add a little folding stool and a mug of tea/coffee!
Which plant is this?
Did you watch the same vid, we all just seen?
Clove powder burned my seedlings and I lost a bunch. I’m having issues with an unknown pest that’s most likely a mouse, but could also be pill bugs or worms. I sprinkled dried crushed peppermint, cinnamon, cayenne, black pepper, and clove. I’m setting mousetraps tonight. Tomorrow I’m going to crush up some eggshells. I have never had a successful garden before and this year I’m determined!!!!
