I remember watching this as a little kid on HBO. I loved The Jerk, his Muppet stuff, even some of his tv comedy. To say the "Dead Men don't wear Plaid" concept went over my head, is an understatement.

That is one powerful damn engine to drive through even shallow water at that speed. Water's like cyanide to an engine, swallowing just a little is enough to kill it.

This scene was actually Jackie Gleason's idea. Without it, Bandit and Justice don't share a scene together until the very end (apart from radio.) A similar instance happened in Die Hard where they realised late in production that Hans and McClane don't meet face to face until the very end, so the scene where Hans pretends to be an escaped hostage was added.
