Comic Recap: Defenders Giant-Size #4 (1975)
The non-team faces off against Squadron Sinister with an assist from Yellow Jacket in a compelling story with more drama than action. @33:45 - @34:00 I refer to Yellow Jacket as Nighthawk by mistake.

A favorite issue of mine from the mid-80's. I did misspeak by 1) calling Wonder Girl 'Wonder Woman' twice, 2) confusing X-Men #112 with #113 , 3) I forgot that it's an elephant trunk and not 'nose', 4) I said Jericho was deaf when he's mute

Great overview. Thanks.
Who would have thought Hulk would go on to get a job as a Las Vegas mob enforcer under the name Joe Fixit 😆
I wished Joe Fix-It era lasted longer
Growing up i was a HUGE Incredible Hulk fan... but not so much the X Men..but i saw this issue in a used book store.. this was before the Comic Book Store era here in NYC ..& seeing Hulk on the cover of X Men was an immediate pick up. I remember enjoying the art very much.& thinking that the story was ok
The beginning of this comic book looks great 00:00-24:00. Hulk stuff at the end was never my cup of tea. :-) But indeed, it was geat stuff already in 1970, though I started to read the Marvel comics in 1985 (first with X-Men).
Big Barda was based on the actress, singer, and early seventies Playboy model named Lanie Kazan.
Why do you keep calling mon-el,montel?
the gummies were effecting me (serious answer) ... also, I've been a 'marble-mouth' so these videos are done - in small part - to overcome that
@MadMetsFan Rock on,brother.
Memorable is one word to use for this comic.
good word
i think i have this comic in my misc bin
I never noticed how McBride kind of plays the part of Michael Morbius in the 94 cartoon. Or vise-versa.
I like this style at the time better than the Amazing Spider-Man Todd McFarlane. Mary Jane like like a bimbo and this kept a more O.g. MJ
Everyone loves the Legion, except DC.
Long Live the Legion, man!
One of my favorite Superman stories was just before this issue, Alan Moore's 'Whatever Happened to The Man of Tomorrow?' Action Comics #583.
Silver & Bronze age had great beautiful cover arts from DCs Superman and few others! But the story was lacking and wasn't up to the great cover art standards. It's a shame, coz Marvel had good great stories but their cover art wasn't much inviting. I'm a DC guy! And Rebirth was one of the best to come out of last 10 years, but they had to mess it up by stupidity & idiocy. But I've still got my golden & bronze age DC classics!🙏
Actually that was DC's creative model: the editors would ask the artists to come up with a really good cover and the writer would write a story (somewhat) based on that cover. Its an ass-backwards way to do things and as you said it did catch-up to DC after a while
Surprised by your comment on Marvel ,never been a fan of them myself, always preferred DC and always will be.
I did switch to being a primary DC fan in the late 80's though, but in the late 70s DC was making it hard for me to be a fan
Probably one of the most dumbest comic books I have ever seen
The Superman with Star Sapphire was worse imo
This is probably the worst comic ever written scene our Superman being out stage by this redheaded stepchild him being out stage by Batman is fine, but but this is more ridiculous. It’s Superman being been out stage by this redhead stepchild douche bag
Wow this insanely old comics never seem them before nice
Chemical King. It's Chemical King. And he never came back. (Zombies don't count.) The first INvisible Kid died and never came back too. Dying in the LSH was harsh.
I seem to remember seeing an issue of The Legion where the original Invisible Kid and the replacement Invisible Kid were in an adventure

This was the first time that Jack Kirby hadn't drawn the "Thor" comic book since it's early days in "Journey Into Mystery", and the next issue would be his last. Stan Lee depended so much on Kirby for the plotting and development of the comics he polished off with his skill for characterisation and dialogue. John Buscema was a great artist, but he wasn't so creative as Jack Kirby with ideas and storytelling, but he and Lee would still have used the Marvel Method though, so he must have contributed something more than the art. I think Stan Lee got a chance to show what he could do on the comic book on his own though. It wasn't bad, but it's difficult to compare what he'd done on it before with Kirby's powerful direction, even though Lee had written better comics without Kirby. Stan Lee would still write comics for another two years with John Buscema and other artists, more than some of which would be very good or excellent. Vince Collecta's inking on John Buscema's art seems to have a more dominant effect than it did on Kirby's bolder style. That "Conan" comic book trailer seems to be waving goodbye to the fading Silver Age of comics. I'm not sure that the Stranger comes off as a gallant figure. Thor later recognises that he isn't the real threat, but he feels dubious about his menacing attitude, that makes him seem rather dangerous. The Stranger had seemed to be possessed of an uncertain morality, and probably stands above mere good and evil. Earlier, in the "Silver Surfer", his character development is stronger, his actions towards Earth being ruthless, but tempered by a viewpoint that desires to protect the Universe. In the end, he even sees that the people of Earth have a nobility that makes them worth saving. Thor isn't omnipotent, within the reality of comics, his altering of events seems to be interfering with destiny. I think that the Blake character is important. He was the identity that Thor assumed when Odin banished him to Earth. They are one and the same, even if he's an avatar.
Great write up ... Marvel thumbed their noses a few times at Kirby like by redoing the Galactus Saga in #120-#123 and basically telegraphing that it could be done better by the current team and Buscema was the go-to guy for it
Great walk-thru with this issue. Looking forward to more videos. I love the bronze age of comics, it is the high point of the art form.
Evil Jimmy Olsen even holds his cup like a jerk.
😩 P r o m o s m
Titles are usually on the first page not the cover. Is this a comic from your childhood? I was 8 or 9 when this book was on the stand.
I noticed that - AFTER recording - but because the title was integrated into the story art and because the title was so generic, I skimmed over it. I was 12 when this comic was out but I wasn't a regular reader of it back then
@@MadMetsFan ahhh, makes sense. I love this period in comics. Thanks for sharing.
Bababooey. Your mom spoke her truth. Solid call in
Hal Jordan is such a lovable tool.
I had this issue-EONS-ago,Grell's art-work is solid in this issue and he has-GOOD-figures too. I noticed about these old Legion comics they placed importance on plot/storylines,than on character development.
DC editors would rotate the writers like clockwork so the book would be released on schedule (or else they would face late fees from the printer,) but that model discouraged character development since the writers weren't fully aware of what the others were up to
@@MadMetsFan Thanks for the good info and explanation.Plus, that was pretty smart of the DC editors, know thy writers. LOL. Did you ever buy that Legion series featuring Supergirl ???
