How It's Made - The Wooden Steps of Geta - Japanese Traditional Art
Just like Kimono, which is famously known for it beauty and still well-used in the daily life of every Japanese. Beneath those beautiful layer also lies another beauty- the Geta, Japanese wooden footwear.
There are many things that can made a Geta, what is it. From the quality of wood to the finishing process of polishing.
In this video, we focus on the process rather than the finishing product. The video focus on how the artisan select his wood and how to store them until the wood is ready to be process.
Then the careful grinding and trimming on the wood pieces. After the artisan got the 2 pieces of even wood, he then cut a whole for the strings. Each steps is carefully watched by a higher supervisor.
Onto the last step, which is to sand them and press down onto the Geta to create a shape that hold on to the feet- it also polish the wood.
Have you ever worn a Geta? How does it feel? Please let me know your experiences in the comment section below!

Through the miraculous hand of the artisan, we can see from the begiinig to finish how just a boring woodpiece can turn into a pricy beauty. Urushi is to many, a miraculous substance. It is the sap from the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum, a plant closely related to poison ivy, and as such, considerably toxic. As with its better known cousins, the poison ivies, oaks and sumacs, contact...

Amazing! I wonder what is the paint used for decorating the doll?
MUSIC AWFUL
Wow, this is actually so umderrated
I have never wanted to see a directors extended cut of a video more in my life. There are SO SO SO SO SO many techniques displayed here only briefly that show a master at this craft. I have learned more in the few second of several scenes that I have in months of research in urushi craft (mostly that I have so much more to learn!). From sharpening the wooden tools, to mixing the base urushi, to mixing the urushi for applying the cloth, to mixing the earthen clay correctly! and so so so so much more. WOW I am in awe of these skills. I wish everyone understood that you are watching the work of a master on a dying art form. Thank you so much for putting this together.
Facility looks messy and old. These hard working people deserve better tools and cleaner working conditions.
that guitar tune sucks
Thank you for a masterful demonstration! I wonder if you can explain how is it that after inserting the head it can't come out?
exactly what I thought lol
Beautiful video on a cherished art, so glad it is still alive today!

Preciosa cerámica y grandes artistas grácias por el video.

This is Seiki Chida, right?
Tolle Handarbeit,Respekt!
I requested a first pen a few days ago from the artisans at Nakaya, and I hope to receive it within 10-12 months.
Why is he tapping on the bits before he places them?
What is the paste being applied to the bits?
Some kind of glue i would think but that leaves me confused because I always thought the true difficulty in creating Kumiko is that the pieces are not glued at all but only holding together through tension and pressure
Wow! Amazing!
Fascinating video. I am amazed at how precise and meticulous the Japanese are at making Fountain Pens. They do an incredible job!
Such a beautiful art form.
I am so thankful that the Japanese people exist on this planet. They have helped to create a more interesting world. 😊 ❤ 🇯🇵 ❤

Hello thank you for the video. How long can this be stored for do you think Kind regards Kev
اعمالكم رائعة وانا احبها
Does the lacquer need anything else on top to have that luster?
no, urushi is naturally very lustrous, its one of its many great qualities!
I have two Nakaya pens, one in red and one in black. I’ve used both of these pens for many years (likely 10+ years). Yesterday I noticed that the section of the red one, had some sort of blisters near the nib. Since this is many layers of lacquer, I’m confused about what could have caused it. I thought they were water droplets at first but then realized they were hard and wouldn’t wipe off. What kind of solvent could cause this? Tom KC3QAC. I made an error, I actually have 3 Nakaya pens, the two mentioned earlier are piccolos with conical ends but I have a third (my first and significantly older) a full size cigar shape, all three are clipless because I don’t like clips. I love all three and hope there is a solution to the blistering and at the very least a means to avoid an future blistering on the two that are still pristine. Thanks again.
Can you describe how the color has changed on the red one throughout the years?
Its the protein
I almost cried
So you are a diehard materialist?
@@user-fg6ro Love the process, not the product.
This is some next level weeb shit
A beautiful video and probably the last straw for me ordering a Nakaya pen for myself, I would like to see some of the laquering process too.
Where can I find the whole series?
The only part the video didn’t show was the bit that was most important… the Urushi lacquering.
Beautiful headphones.
These pens are almost too gorgeous to be true... Though I may never be able to afford one, I doubt I will ever find more beautiful pens.
