Mull of Galloway Stranraer to Whitehaven
The final push to finish our year long adventure from Whitby to Whitehaven on Freyr. This includes our plans on navionics.
We navigate the nine tides of the Mull of Galloway, placed there by nine witches to trick sailors, so the story goes.
Before we set off there's a couple of last jobs that need doing then see if we make it round in one piece.

It's October 2023, and I'm just getting Freyr ready for a few weeks without us. We're getting the engine sorted and if the weather turns we may not be back until New Year. After 4 days of being stuck on the boat due to boat jobs and rain, I decided to venture out. I experienced something that gave me the inspiration to do a painting and I got some news about my eyes. The painting was completed ...

    I remember the Crinan Canal from my boyhood. I grew up sailing an open gaff rigged clinker dingy around Loch Crinan. One great memory was when the filming of From Russia With Love was being shot, no it was not eastern Europe. The boat chase sequences were filmed in Loch Craignish and the crew was based in Crinan. Wrecked and burt out Fairey Marine motor yachts brought tears to a teenagers eyes.

    I would pay real money to watch someone take a 12 tonne ,long keel lump under sail with no engine or electrics and put it safely into a marina that is exposed to north westerly's and 8 miles of fetch. A Marina that you haven't been in before ,with 8 weeks real experience and no one on the pontoons waiting ,with don't forget the best part of 40 knot , not forecasted , north westerly gusts up its backside without hurting anyone else , or breaking someone else's fibreglass pride and joy when it gets hit with 12 tonnes of steel travelling at speed with no reverse. Just do it on your own 12t long keel lump and your insurance and your conscience . Not mine 3 experienced yacht delivery people needed the RNLI to help them in that day , With over 100 years experience between them and a working , running engine and half a dozen of us on the pontoon pulling them in . I watched the ladies of Salty Lass try sailing a fin keel into a virtual marina in flat seas with what looked like less than 10 knots. I wont spoil it by telling you who wins , Them or the marina . Its a good video . Gill i am really glad the RNLI came out and we didn't think we knew everything , certainly more than a yachtmaster instructor and try it ourselves. We would have hurt someone had we attempted to sail that in with that weather into that marina on that day.

    I suspect he did not set the anchor properly. If weather is bad, set an anchor watch. I've sat out a F10 , Isle Oronsay. Sat tight on the lee of the point, even used the engine all night, just in case we were set adrift. Had the second anchor ready in case we had to lose the first one, a big fender was tied to the bitter end. The second anchor was all ready to go, only 5m chain and 30m warp. The Mantus held us with 8m of 16mm chain and 30m 16 ❤mm anchorplait. When it gets to survival conditions keep crew smiling with cocoa, bacon butties every two jours, and a shot of whisky at 2.00 am

    I decided a mantus was a good anchor, but have a big CQR low in the boat as a back up. Don't ever throw your anchor away! I can't believe you have not thought these things through. Read Tom Cunliffe books. Take a course with senior Instructor. 😂Learn to sail. If it happens again, consider tying a fender to the anchor chain before losing the chain. That way you can go back and recover the anchor as the fender will mark it for you. As for electrics, expect any "owner installed" electrics to be cr@p. On our boat, we actually found two wires held together with a paper clip and covered with PVC tape.

    • @GillNicholasDelusions
      @GillNicholasDelusions 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GillNicholasDelusions - that was the worst, but there were plenty of others including a spade connector attached to the wire by a few strands of copper. Where did we find this abomination? At the back of the alternator! Basically, if you see PVC tape on wiring or wiring not properly secured then it is a good bet it was an owner installation made to the "good enough, it'll do" standard. Chop it out and fix it. Your spade connector looked like a proper job so I am sure you will have no bother sorting out the dreck

    Did my competent crew out of Oban in the tail end of a hurricane in October a few years back. What an incredible five days of being at sea. We found a couple of hurricane holes on that coast and withstood some insane winds. But I will never forget helming under sail down to the west of Insch Island and Easedale in moderate seas that felt like the yacht was buried underwater all too frequently. And the tiller spitting me off my perch clinging onto the guard lines. Twice I ended up on the floor of the aft. Dropping into the bottom of troughs that came half way up the mast. It was superb and I was completely bitten by the sailing bug. If we had been blessed with fair weather I would have learned a quarter of what I gleaned on that trip. Happy travels.

    I’m doing a lot of consuming not creating, thoroughly enjoying and learning along the way. Thank you Gill, I’m hoping this consuming may help me to put images down from visualisations I have and dreams 😊

      Hi Jane, don't feel bad for procrastinating, I think it's all part of it. I'd say it's more digesting :D. If you want to, just choose the one you fancy, don't feel you have to do them in order xx

    Hey Gill! We used to Ref together....you were the only one that got my name "Reason"..probably not a good idea to be floating a boat there at this time of year, the flood-plains start to open in Autumn and all the land-locked waterways rise and drain to the plains. They can jump three to five feet in hours as the rain and wash comes off the hills. I'd be very careful as the streams, when they flood, have a huge amount of pull once they are full and forced down the rocks and they have crazy undertow once they start flowing through the crags

      Thanks so much for commenting Reason, hehe, yeah I thought your name was perfect. Don't worry, we're all safely tucked up in Largs for now. The adventure continues soon. I'm just painting some pictures with dodgy eyes at the moment so It's slow going. My treatment is on the 30th of November so I'll be fine after that. I hope you're enjoying the videos, please come back and watch more soon. x

    Good news your eye can be treated Gill. That brought back memories of childhood. A major cycle race used to go past our house.
