Minds on Math, Dr. Steven Pinker - Wednesday, March 13th 2024
Minds on Math, co-sponsored by the Lab for the Developing Mind at New York University (director, Dr. Moira Dillon) and by the National Museum of Mathematics and supported by the National Science Foundation, features accomplished scholars in developmental psychology, cognitive science, mathematics, and education, who conduct research on how our minds and brains learn and appreciate math and related fields.
Title: "Rationality: What It Is, Why It Seems Scarce, Why It Matters”
Abstract: Today, humanity is reaching new heights of scientific understanding-and at the same time appears to be losing its mind. Why do we find ourselves flooded with fake news, medical quackery, conspiracy theorizing, and “post-truth” rhetoric? Why do we fail to take advantage of the powerful tools of reasoning our best thinkers have discovered over the millennia: logic, critical thinking, probability, correlation and causation, and optimal ways to update our beliefs? And how does the rational pursuit of self-interest, sectarian solidarity, and uplifting mythology by individuals add up to crippling irrationality in a society?
Join cognitive psychologist and popular science author Steven Pinker as he discusses why rationality matters, how it leads to better choices in our lives and in the public sphere, and how it is the ultimate driver of social justice and moral progress.

13:40 No. The fact that she has twitches does not show that she does *not* have Tourette's Syndrome. The fact that she has twitches does *not* show that she *has* Tourette's Syndrome, or "probably" has Tourette's Syndrome. (In fact, depending on age, nature of twitches, when they appeared, etc., her twitches might not make Tourette's any more likely than if she didn't have those twitches. They might mean exactly nothing with respect to Tourette's at all.)

Why didn't Pinker cite as an example the most notorious conspiracy theory of our day which was baselessly promulgated by just about every major Media news outfit for 3 years, namely that Russia colluded with Trump to steal the 2016 election. In fact Manny diluted Americans still believe this

24 years ago it was no excuse for not efficiently and effectively getting young minds into markets in they're most productive years. Still this appears to be a clinging to antiquated bias.unlikd Europe & abroad who was in combat with. Which raises lots of why 1900s structuralism questions. We literally sold our soul agency free will inertia frame of reference the very core thread of unlocking all natural systems methodology and what it means to be American born of a distinct past in uk in concert with modern scientific explosion not old world thinking . All a gen x middle age Americans witnessed was plenty of prayer logic whatsboutism conservativism vs cursed rationalism progressive interventionism but no common sense innovation. In fact we witnessed pragmatism physically ripped from classrooms, censored in textbooks and sublty inverted in teaching it wasn't just in education either . After type writers & and calculators, it's extremely disappointing in unwillingness to innovate in areas closest to it. We've asked kids of 1900s for radical change and stopped enriching young minds to recruit instead for specific archetypical minds. A very dark age living in the wake of old motivational European reactions of and to put back all human qualities Newton discovered back into nature itself. Stripping out wholistic pragmatic common sense was not only wrong but it created echo chamber and instead of innovation taking higher ed to pupils more close nit one on one ,interacting with local feilds, markets ,industry's to help create interest fuel motivation for the world they will navigate and instead ripped it out in 1980 . The very grand unified theory itself doesn't preserve ,remember, or remind anything about methods of discovery. It is an old world ptolemaic evolution while all the gallaleo conprencous discovery is simply made a local system to be manipulated and evolved to fit this old world perception that was good for naming form and shape but never could predict anything or it wouldve. We do nothing to let natural systems or how we do it speak for itself in the final predictermind models. It's a train wreck of pergatory docterine with all human qualities put in nature while computation dictates meaning. consolidated and incorporated increased degrees of nepotism in a time of richard finneman on video archive ,Zoom able to reach entire nations of pupils .20 years removed capabilities stone age antiquated education simply following its own predictable path informed by its own grand unified theory. geology ,biology, astronomy, combativly fighting students, and every discovery made. We've only improved on what was created by a more esoterica America or the few positive gaps filled in by mass displacement immigration of a self destroyed Euroasia. Why America adopted the very things its ancestors fled is a very interesting puzzle of logic ,cursed rationalism but not very blessed common sense conclusion of its own

Same goes for all who hasn't been willing to give rise to fullffillement of why, publishers & unions was formed in first place as online coops subcontracted out skills and trade while all buyers ,sellers can be held in a single domain where no one can hustle the other yet this didn't happen 20 years ago the way it organically could've.

Of course, many people think that Russia rigged the 2016 election, colluding with Trump. Or that Trump called the far right marchers at Charlottesville, 2017, “fine people.” Gullibility cuts all ways, and the common thread may be that so many people prefer their emotions to checking things out.

Hi Professor. In one of your presentations, one could identify the mathematicians as you had stated area of working plus superior ability and I think also departments. I asked my supervisor then if this is alright. She didnt think so... but for conveniemve van someone use the open access day when they are at a University for a tiny proposal they are making? Do you think older humans can evolve too? I wanted to apply to your University but we would probably clash. But I respect you as an authority on the matter about embodied mathematics.
