How to build flight simulators from discarded airplane frames
Converting a King Air into a simulator - the story so far
I short summary of what has happened over the last few months converting a discarded King Air 200 into a simulator on a motion platform. In the coming days I will be testing the motion system with the cockpit attached to it, after I have bolted down all the structures.

King Air 200 conversion into a simulator - update
มุมมอง 637หลายเดือนก่อน
I haven't posted in a while so I decided to post an update of the current status of converting a real King Air 200 frame into a simulator. Work is going well, we have added most of the instrumentation and controls. We also measured the weight of the entire sim, including people, to make sure we are still within the parameters of the motion platform. I also quickly show you how I build some of t...

Rebuilding throttle quadrant - King Air 200
มุมมอง 4125 หลายเดือนก่อน
Full video at my Patreon page www.patreon.com/horstfederau After getting all the parts from another discarded King Air 200, I have started to rebuild the throttle quadrant so I can use it in the flight simulator. I have figured out a way to add sensors (potentiometers) to the levers, rudder trim and aileron trim. I am also starting to design the main instrument panel (MIP) in a CAD software to ...

Where was this? Very interested! Would definitely be a good project
Coming alone nicely. Cannot wait to see it with motion.
What a shame. Surely some museum or restoration group should get onto this..Make a great resto project. And to fly. I want one.
Awesome to find this. I am just starting my journey to build a full kingair 350. By chance have you measured and documented any of the measurements of mip, centre pedestal or throttle box units?
I have some of the dimensions. Please email me at hfederau@lifttrust.com
Nice work, looking great.
Great build! Wow looks phenomenal great work!
Thanks for the very interesting video Horst. I've never seen an 'intermediate' cost flight sim platform, (much more expensive than a home-user DOF setup, but much cheaper than the millions cost of a commercial cockpit sim). A very attractive option for anyone with (I guess) about 50k and a high ceiling room to accommodate it. Presumably when the cockpit fuselage section is attached, it would be surround by projection monitors ?
Thank you. Yes, I really like this product, it is about U$30K (plus shipping). The 65" TVs are already mounted to the frame. If you look at one of my previous videos you will see how it looks from inside the cockpit.
BIG 😍😍
Will be more interesting once the aircraft shell has been mounted on it to see the difference in weight loading and functionallity
So cool. How much does this amazing platform cost?
@@Alcenes about U$30K
This may have an obvious answer but, why are you sitting in the motion chair?
Awesome job Horst.
Very cool!
Enjoy watching your progress, Horst. Keep posting updates!
Save these old birds now !
Those two planes should not be sitting there to rot
Nice project, are you going to mount the whole shown shell onto the motion platform?
Yes
@@HorstFederau Unless you have a real need for all that space, I would cut half of it off as it would give you some good weight savings and also enable the overhangs/inertia to be less. All the best for your project.
@@seattime4075 yes, we need the space for the instructor station
What does the platform roughly cost?
@@737sstU$30K
What a SHAME that they're just sitting out there melting into the ground. Bad Bad Bad.....
What an amazing project !
There must be someone out there I am thinking of buffalo Joe of. Buffalo airways Canada. From jeremy Mellor England or set .up a fund to save them for ❤😂❤😊
Could. These. To. Norseman. Aircraft. Be. Restored. To flying condition. How. About. Putting. A diesel. Engine. In. One. I. Think. This. Would help from Jeremy mellor
I really doubt it. They are in bad shape. Too bad. I would love to use them for a flight simulator
Good job. It's Amazing with a Real cockpit. Wait to see more
How much was the Brunner motion platform ?
Schade drum. Erinnern mich an zwei Broussards, die vor fünfzig Jahren links und rechts vom Eingang des militärischen Teils des Flughafens von Ouagadougou standen, der eine grün, der andere silbern.
Fantastic, i have a King ki525 system, can you convert it??
Are you wanting to use the electronics inside? Or replace with Arduino compatible electronics?
@@HorstFederau I want to replace it with Arduino for use with Xplane 12, i also have the RMI 229 and slaving control KA51
unbelievable man. It's crazy to find a retired king air. I have the same project of you (without the reals parts) . one more followers 😊
That right there is damn near a crime leaving those girls AND those engines out there naked
Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Horst my friend can't wait to see this project done keep going
Hi, Let me know if you need help with anything, I had the opportunity to build a B200 FTD from scratch, greetings friend
Nice! Looking forward to see it come alive!
A very good arrangement! But why not make use of a Hall effect sensor? Wouldn't it be more reliable than light sensing?
Norsemans were beasts. Slow, but efficient beasts. Predictable and easy to fly.
where can I find a salvage cessna 152/172 fuselage with cheap price in west coast Canada?
Awesome!
Horst: Short, but interesting video. Very good frame rate. Can you share some details of what you are using?
Very nice. I love the attention to detail!
The only non realistic thing is tnat you have way too much elbow room, hahahahaha. Great work, enjoy.
Thank you. It is a pre-made Frasca frame, so I can’t change the elbow room. I used what I had on hand, my other Cessna 152 and Beechcraft cockpits are the real deal, with no elbow room 😂
Sick. I think the next upgrade should be a triple screen setup for the full surround experience
Yes, that’s coming…stay tuned
Looking great Horst. I enjoy watching your progress.
Were you able to finish the PFC conversion from serial to usb? What was the name of the card you used?
Yes, it is my Cessna simulator. I have used Leo Bodnar cards, but I like using Teensyduino as it has built in functionality for X-Plane
What is the hat you have mounted on the Arduino please?
Screw Terminal Block Breakout Shield Module for Arduino MEGA-2560 R3 from Amazon
@@HorstFederau great, thanks. My 172 sim thanks you.
Do you have more info about this, like sketch, sensor en its config ?? Could be very usefull for a lot of people !!! Thanks anyway ...
Hi, there is an update to this video. I stopped using those infrared sensors as they ended up being unreliable. I started using micro-switches instead. Here is a link to a newer video where I also show the sketch. th-cam.com/video/9mpWFTipTF4/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Great work, would you mind sharing your code please.
I show the code in the video…?

That’s strange…sounds ok on my computer. Others don’t seem to have an issue with the sound either. The volume hight looks good on the video editor too…
Its so sad to see these amazing old machines just sitting there abandoned...
Fantastic find you lucky man, Would absolutely love to see a series on the restoration😍
Dear Horst Federau, I'm Yuki from Japan. Thanks for the very exciting video. Your video inspired me to buy a VSI. I am planning to incorporate a stepper motor. However, the shaft that moves the needle is very thin and it seems difficult to connect it to the motor shaft. In your video it looks like it can be smoothly interlocked, but how is it connected? I'm looking forward to your answer. Best Regards, Yuki
Hi Yuki, I replaced the factory shaft with my own. It is really hard to connect to the original shaft. I took it all apart and replaced it.
@@HorstFederau Thank you very much for your quick reply. I see, you are replacing the shaft! Is the shaft you replaced a custom-made shaft? If so, is the shape very thin on one side and matches the shaft of the servo motor on the other side? Best Regards, Yuki
Fantastic set up and great video. Maybe, some attention regarding the monitor bezels. Maybe a mirror tape on the bezels may help.
