    Probably the best preparation I ever did for a piano piece (it was a Mozart sonata in that case) was pretty much this: visualizing its music in my head while spontaneously creating and enacting a choreography that embodied it's energy in terms of phrasing and rhythmical structure. At my exam, my fingers moved with an energy and virtuosity they had never experienced, with a ''surprising regularity in the 16th notes'' (was the comment of my judges at my exam) and in just the right spirit for the piece. Definitely one of my best memories as a musician. This method which I just discovered seems to do just that. If you can't dance the music you play at least somehow, you probably don't really feel it and won't be able to convey its message.

      Dalcroze music is usually improvised by the teacher/person conducting the class. This is one hallmark of Dalcroze pedagogy - the teacher/facilitator is required to be a good improvisor. Reason is to adapt to the class/students capabilities and also adapt to the activities/movements you plan to do for the day. There is no fixed repertoire used in Dalcroze.

    Before performing these two pieces, Riva provided the following notes: "The first piece, Danse bigarrée No. 6, has the title "Dance," but was written not for dance but to think about dancing. It was written in 1937. The second piece, "Le fox-trot angoissé," is a very funny piece. Dalcroze started his career as a chansonier, writing songs for the French cabaret, and we will find a lot of this irony in this piece. The "Le fox-trot angoissé" is part of "Entrée dansante" written in 1924. You will see changing meters, and-especially in the fox-trot-the influence of jazz and the new rhythms coming from America to Europe between the two World Wars. Especially in the second piece, you will see how Dalcroze created tension just by switching the accent. The theme is always the same, but he changes the accent and [introduces] some silence. It's a very, very funny piece...you will see!"

  • @dalcrozeusa
    @dalcrozeusa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Before he performed this piece, pianist Riva shared the following comments with the audience: "Now I will play a selection of three pieces taken from "20 Caprices et études rythmiques," which is the most important work by Dalcroze in the 20th century. Of course, you will see a completely different style [than what we heard before]: we will have part-changing, we will have different meters put together. [This is all] Eurhythmics, that you know very well. It's not music written for eurhythmics, but the influence of his work in eurhythmics is already evident. The capriccio form is something which is very free, so as in the "Skizzen," it's very, very short music-four to five pages maximum for each [movement]-but with a precise character which is different one to the other, like an improvisation."

      @@yat-yeechong9622 yeah and unfortunately most piano music is over-composed so it is so hard to find something which sounds like this improvisation but is professionally recorded. Piano music usually becomes heavy on the ear instead of just putting out the core of the music which is a joy to feel. The ones who record stuff like this are usually not able to play anything complex either so it sounds not as good. It has to be by someone who can play the complex pieces but chooses simplicity to serve the music. But not like Arvo Part who goes into a totally different zone yet again and throws out the beat.
