The dual row rarely fails

Time has passed, but there are "different" views on the IMS and Clutch problems. First, Jake Raby LN Engineering does not like the dual row IMS bearing because it is "TOO GOOD". By that, he means that is case wear and start to flake out metal pieces and still work, but will fill engine with metal and destroy it slowly. The IMS bearing is ALSO "time limited" and should be replaced when "Time Used" is expired. An OEM Porsche IMSB should be replaced (as a "wear item") in an engine. Unfortunately, nearly any IMSB replacement is costly. It is a VERY GOOD idea to replace IMSB when engine and/or trans is out of the car. Go look at LN ENgineering - Jake Raby videos on IMSB, perhaps some of the best available. Oil pressure and hard right hand turns also provide another glaring problem with the 996 engine. At that time, the OEM AOS, which is considered and proven POS, should be replaced with a UAOS (See Rennlist 996 Forums) for reference. Second, whatever flywheel you choose, a new clutch disc is cheap, put a new one in. Add a "Deep Sump" which increases oil capacity and "helps" promote oil flow to the right cyl. bank. Particular oils have been proven to be better for M9x6 engines, Driven DT40 among them. Read about Oil starvation and what to do about it. As in a previous video, B4 taking trans from engine, make a cardboard template and put all the bolts in it. A wrong length bolt in the wrong position will punch the case and make it instant junk. While all Porsche owners know and feel for the (Excessive) Porsche-Parts-Tax, meaning outrageous prices for parts, there are alternative sources for 996 and 997 version 911s. There can be $$ deals out there . I mean no offence, just information. I liked seeing your videos as a beginner P-addict. Good luck, keep the shiny side up.

If the car is on a smooth, flat surface and the tyres are at normal pressure, the handbrake is off & the disc brakes aren’t binding, it’s actually quite easy to roll it back and forth by hand. I do this most times I park in my only just long enough garage, so that I can easily walk around both ends while carrying things. I rotate my tyres once a month while in winter storage, by jacking up one wheel at a time. I position a piece of sacrificial wood between the Jack & jacking point.

I love the breakdown and cost listing. Personally i would rebuild this engine with resleeving also going for incresead displacement. 24k for brand new engine is out of option since with rebuild you can mold it the way wou want and used engines are enigmas

7:45 torque spec for cam cover bolts is 13 Nm (or 10 ft-lbs, maybe that's where the confusion is)-not 10 Nm

i did notice that you went around some of the outside of the bolt holes... aren't you supposed to go inside of the bolt holes ? if you go around the outside of the bolt holes there is nothing stopping the oil traveling between the flanges up the bolt holes through the thread and out from underneath the bolt, as there is no sealant to stop it. ..just wondering

A new Porsche pump would've come with that valve, which means your man suggesting fuel pump had the right answer :D

Appreciate the video! Bought a used 991.1 C2 (identical engine as here) a little over a year ago. Bought it with 72k miles (115k km) and I've driven it a LOT since then, so I'm just over 90k miles ( 145k km). Suspect I'm passed the window of concern. If it was going to fail, it likely would have by now. That said, if this ever happened, I suspect I'd just have a shop bore and re-sleave. Getting a used engine is rolling the dice again, but least expensive. Getting a new engine from Porsche is assured, but most expensive. In both of those cases, you're getting another 3.4L engine. Refurbishing the damaged engine by boring & re-sleaving is middle cost, but you're basically getting a new engine AND getting 4.0 GT3 engine. A bit more expensive than eBay, but you're getting a huge upgrade that's essentially a new engine. Hoping I won't ever have to deal with this, or at least not for a long time, but that's how I'd probably handle it.

In California you must smog cars that are newer than 1975. So that 1979 MGB would have to have smog.

I just purchased (Sept 2024) a brown 1978 MGB that looks just like that. Got mine from the original family with 16,500 original miles. The engine compartment looks like it has zero miles on it. So fun to drive.

I have a 79 MGB fortunately I live in the state where I could legally remove the air pump and replace the Stromberg carburetor with a Weber. Now I have 90hp like the old ones.

Are the pistons on the early Locasil1 engines different from the Locasil2 engines?

Never keep it on drive, it’ll end up switching gears at the wrong time causing you to line lock and crash into something. Start on 1st gear then go to 2nd.
