I missed the first bird of the year yesterday by 3 minutes and came away very frustrated. So to open the viewing flap on the hide at the very late time of 07:50, I was so delighted to find this group of 5.

The winter flooding has kept Snipe mostly out of sight from our hides, so I grabbed this chance to film 4 in this last week. I never get bored of watching them, to me their complex tones of browns are beautiful

How do you tell the difference between a lesser black-backed gull and yellow-legged gull? They both have yellow legs and look very similar.

To my ears the first note or two of a blackcaps song tend to be a bit scratchy, uncertain of pitch, whereas the garden warbler thinks of the note before it starts (I am a choir trainer).

I'm pretty good on bird song ID but struggle between Blackcap and a Garden Warbler

Not at all, I'd say all waders can sit easily, after all they all sit on nests

Cheers, I've got lots of common things to film yet too, just some of them are a bit trickier to film, Rook is always miles away, but I'm just making excuses, I do expect to reach my goal

We have a lot of the right habitat, but very few birds and they have got harder and harder to see, I never see them do their display into the air, not sure why?
Two house martins fly back to our street from Africa today
I saw a swallow in the field this afternoon when I was walking! It means spring is here.

It seems a little bit earlier to see the sand martins back to their nests here in UK?
This is a typical date for us, in fact 18th and earlier have been recorded over the 42 years I have visited my patch
