Excellent presentation sir! In fact one of the best i have heard on this subject!. So i want two boats...one a stable and light fishing and hunting boat for short paddles on lakes yet durable and higher initial stability. Which wenonah do you recommend? The second boat needs to be a tough beater boat for river hunting and maybe some camping. Thoughts? I currently have a 16 foot penobscot which I bought used for little money. I took the center thwarts out so that I could paddle down our lake, hunt a deer with my bow, and then haul the carcass back without having to stuff it under a darned thwart. Wish someone would build a boat like that...a pick up canoe.
you didn't show the turnover /recovery
Always use the butt of the paddle (the handle) to push off with.
One of my aluminum Grummans was made in 1946 ( S.N. 621A). Try that with anything plastic! Of course you need to be very careful around rocks!
He talks as if getting a Viking longship is a bad thing… I think my ancestors may have a thing or two to say about that.
Thank you! I learned a lot from this. Headed to the BWCA in late September when it starts to get chilly. Much appreciated for all the ideas!
keel *cough cough*
Look Sir, having a technical discourse with a music backing track for distraction is a big No No. I appreciate what you are trying to do, but music and technicalities do not mix.
There was some very good information about what to look for in a boot. Identifying what kind of terrain, you are planning to use them in is also very important to selecting the boot as well ie climbing up the side of mountains. I didn't hear anything mentioned about wearing socks and/or a sock liner you plan to wear while hiking on the terrain you will be climbing. Also, there are lacing techniques that can be beneficial as well in trapping your heel back preventing your foot from sliding too far forward. When selecting my boots I also had the opportunity to stand on an artificial incline in the shop to encourage your foot to slide forward/backwards to see if the fit was good enough to prevent blackening of the toes. or blisters. The person I was working with actually was sent to a seminar specifically on how to fit hiking and mountaineering boots and this was really beneficial because the boots I selected were a perfect fit and comfortable with never a blister or even a hotspot.
Great video. I would add that full leather Goodyear welted boots may have some initial heal slip. As the welt and flex points break in a natural curve will establish in the boot some and will “tighten” the fit somewhat. Toe room is key. A boot never stretches in length.
thinking of a 17 foot old town canoe for a long canoe trip on the yellowstone river from livingston to glendive across montana what would you recommend
We don't need your life story bro. It's better to get to the point.
He knows Stevie Wonder is blind right😂
This was actually super helpful for me. I really appreciate the video. Sounds like an aluminum Canoe is more my style at the moment. I was hesitant about buying a 12 ft aluminum canoe I found on marketplace but this video has helped me decide to buy it. Thanks again, cheers!
I'll hike for the first time next week-ish and i'm still deciding whether to buy one or not. It's quite rainy here in my country so it'll probably muddy. Should i just go for it?
Some beautiful canoes in this video, but here in the UK canoes are rare and expensive. these would probably go over £3000. I have a Perception kayak for now and can't justify the expense to change to a canoe.
Here in the US those canoes go for over $3,000 usd
I think a kayak would generally be more suitable for the waters around the UK right? That’s just an assumption. Here in the US it seems like kayaks are also much more popular and common. I just went to a local outdoor supply store and they had dozens of kayaks but not one single canoe.
I want a canoe I can put a small trolling motor on
What would you suggest for a big water canoe touring type canoe that you could load up with camping gear and fish out of for one person.
this is quite a good video, I wear waterproof hiking shoes and my feet come home soaking fae all the sweat I end up building throughout the day😅
You know it’s funny, I have a ton of extremely expensive gear (mainly traditional type) for month long expeditions, different gear for winter travel, fall and winter travel while hunting, etc. etc. so I got the Nova Craft Prospector 16’ in Tuff Stuff Expedition. It’s fantastic…..my point is that even with this gear which is incredible and I enjoy every minute on a trip, some of my most satisfying trips have been with a minimalist bushcraft setup. Those are the trips where I have lots of time leftover each day because of simplicity, where the full kit trips…..I WORK HARD! Those bushcraft simple escapades are when I wish I also had a restored Chestnut cedar/canvas about 14 or 15’ long.
His singing career must have gone bust.
Perhaps you should open with if you’re going to buy a WOOD paddle then….
how come you never discuss T-formex
My fit are two different sizes :( my right foot is slightly wide and slightly longer. I'm narrow in the heels and standard or slight wide in the toes.
Thanks I was stuck between tow sizes of salmons this helps
What about condoms? Should I size up in that? If so, I would have to from a small to a medium.
This is the best video I have seen so far regarding meals, meals planning, etc for BWCA and Quetico! Thank you for taking the time!
Personally, I favor Grumman or other high quality aluminum canoes, but.... Aluminum is the worst possible choice for rivers where you may run up against rocks or submerged roots and branches. Aluminum has a "sticky" property that tends to stop suddenly on objects, often with the high possiblity of a capsize. Also, they all have a "keel" that is actually the joining member for riveting the two halves together. It has a slowing effect on turning which may be a problem if you need a quick manuever. Other , better materials, such as a used Royalex canoe would be a far better choice for moderate to fast rivers because it has a slippery quality that does not hang up. And, they are made of a single sheet of material with no keel, although the bottom-of-the-line Colemans do have a ridge for stiffening. Those are just plastic. Royalex is the best used material for a river canoe. Very tough, good glide over objects, lots of used boats out there. For slow, flat rivers and lakes, bayous, sheltered inlets, or even good weather on open Sounds - Aluminum is no problem.
Thank you. For river fishing near my house I was looking at a aluminum canoe. There around $200 on market place all day.
What type of canoe is good when the lakes get choppy a foot or so, from the wind? Thank for sharing the knowledge.
a damn good video! sooo informative for the beginner paddlers. answered all my questions! thank you for your work!
Question: for river camping, and to minimize swamping, would say an old town sportsman 120 fishing kayak be better versus the discovery 119 hybrid or a traditional canoe I’m new, so I’m just trying to research as much as I can before I buy. Thanks
A fishing kayak is designed for flat water only. I've seen videos of people using the Discovery 119 on rivers and doing ok. It doesn't have much room for camping gear though. There is a reason people use 15-16 ft tandem canoes for solo camping trips. They need to cargo space for flotation bags and their gear.
You should look into the Old Town Discovery 133k. I one and although it is a bit on the heavy side, it is very stable and has a manageable capacity of about 600lbs. It also has a full length keel so it tracks very well.
is that a model of a canoe at the 40 minute mark +/-?. Thank you very much for the great advice you give; it has save my life a few times on the lower Mississippi River.
Aluminum it is
I watched a video of a guy remodeling his canoe 🛶, it was similar in structure and design to the oldtown canoe with the seats being the width bracing and also the gunwall to floor bracing he didn’t like the seats were to uncomfortable so he removed them he had good ideas but completely ignorant of the fact that he had completely removed the structure in doing so which can distort the shape and performance. He constructed a couple of platforms he mounted deck swivel seats that you would see on a bass boat and just set them in the canoe without fastened , I wish you could give dos and don’ts for the guys that don’t understand that if you take out the structurally designed support of the gunwalls to floor you must somehow replace that when remodeling your canoe 🛶 a short video of the canoe structural bracing and purposes would probably do .
I lost you at point A to Point B as fast as you can. And then look over here and then paddle. That helped so much I’ll never find the right canoe! Im just going to stick to point C and D Any one else confused. Smoke some more
Don’t even try canoeing if you can’t understand that you may as well just stay home and smoke some more and just dream about it
Long short. Wide short. Across the lake fast on the river and fast I mean fast or narrow wow. Fast long ago b paddling fast and then I got to piss stop all that speed. Hammock. 3 strokes and switch the look around screw it motor boat looking
@@butcherknife59knife46 lmao lol put 45lb thrust on mine , been there done that , I’m to damn old to paddle anymore , I even had to add a stand assist bar and my wife said it looks like a walker on my canoe ! Just making do with what I got
Class 4, class 5 rapids in a canoe?! 😳😳 I’ll pass 🤣
Welcome to eastern and Arctic Canada! My Nova Craft Prospector 17 in Tuffstuff just laughs it off.
The music drowns him out
you might be autistic
You are not going to run class 4 or 5 white water with an open canoe.
The background music was annoying and unnecessary 👍🏻
I have the same boat ! Awesome canoe !
Cheap? My dad's aluminum canoe was $1,300 ,or more.
that's not bad for a new canoe with carbon fiber, Kevlar they run well over 3k
I have a fractured spine, pinched nerve, and back spasms, torn rotator cuff andadeer tick wrecked my joints. I need something light for fishing in the boundary waters of Minnesota.
I already know all this stuff but man ot was a good video!
Thank you so much for your amazing information about the canoeing.
Thank you, excellent rundown of features to look for in a canoe.
Great program and content. Thanks Jonathon and MM.
What’s a sheer line?
It's a line of balance on the side of the canoe / boat. Imagine trying to push the canoe over from it's side while on water - for as long as the water is below that line, the canoe is going to bounce back once you let it go. However if you push it over that line, the center of mass ends up being on the other side and the canoe is going to flip over.
sadly Midwest mountaineering is gone now
Yea, I really miss it too. The spring and fall expos were great. We don’t have anything like that anymore. I wonder if there is an opportunity for Rutabaga open a store in the Twin Cities, or move Canoecopia here in the future. It’s kind of strange, many of the canoe specialty stores are no longer in the TC area in spite of the large canoe/kayak community. Ketter canoe Midwest Mountaineering Northwest Canoe Various pack and accessory manufacturers, like CLG enterprises .
Guys like that is probable the reason
This is a really well put together and presented video. Entertaining and very informative. Thanks.
